Bruce Arians Suggests Kicking Woes In South End Zone Are A “Jinx”

September 10th, 2021

Kickers and jinxes.

Joe wrote this on Twitter last night; how refreshing was it to see an opposing kicker come into the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway and yack all over his shoes kicking in the south end zone?

Cowboys kicker Greg Zuerlein missed three kicks, all toward the south end zone, two field goals and an extra point. Huge misses since the final score was Bucs 31, Cowboys 29.

Joe remembers when Dirk Koetter was with the Bucs and he cited a study the NFL conducted that claimed the south end zone was one of the trickiest places to kick. It had something to do with wind currents.

Joe always laughed about this not because Joe didn’t believe the study findings, but that Joe witnessed far too often dome kickers coming into the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway and having few if any issues with the south end zone. But Bucs kickers looked like drunk college chicks trying to kick field goals.

Shoe was on the other foot last night.

Today in his day-after presser, Arians was asked about Ryan Succop’s game-winning field goal at the “dreaded south end zone.”

Arians immediately began snickering when he heard “dreaded south end zone” and he basically said that the belief kicking in the south end zone is challenging is little more than some hoax.

“I don’t believe in jinxes, and I don’t think [Succop] does either,” Arians said. “So he’s never really struggled at that end at all.”

Joe truly has no idea if that study Koetter cited is a hoax or a jinx or is legit. Joe never saw the study and isn’t a physicist, isn’t an engineer and doesn’t have access to NOAA wind charts.

So perhaps it all just boils down to the Bucs had a better kicker last night than the Cowboys?

Swirling winds won’t blow the ball 30 yards left. He missed that one by a mile.

    It’s ANGER issues.

    “snap hook”

Off the subject; How about wearing the new/old Creamsicle uniforms against the dirty birds next week? Hope they bring back the orange pants!

Trade OJ Howard, Rojo and a 1st round pick for Stephon Gilmore.

If we want to win the next two Super Bowls, we need TWO great corners.

    #1 CB- Stephon Gilmore
    #2 CB- Carlton Davis
    #3- Jamel Dean
    #4- Murphy Bunting
#5 – We need someone faster than Cockrell.

  6. Devin DiPalma Says:

Everyone needs to calm down on the CB stuff until we have a few more games under our belt. Dean had a rough game; I’m confident the coaches will help him figure it out. Sometimes you have to give your opponent some credit too; Dallas had a great game plan and executed really well for the most part. Their defense was light years ahead of where it was last year yet we should’ve probably scored 50 on them. Just imagine how good we will be once we work out the kinks and stop making so many mistakes!

It’s the ghost of Donald Igwebuike, that’s where the Nigerian drug lords buried him. Sad tale.

  8. Rod Munch Says:

teacherman777 – Belichick isn’t going to do anything to help Brady win another ring without him. Also Gilmore has said he’s not playing for his $7m salary, he wants a new deal and he’s 30-years old. I mean using void years and salary trickery you might be able to get something done, but again, Belichick isn’t going to trade him to Tampa. Every other NFC team, sure, but not Tampa.

First time in my now going into year 8 as a fan I felt confident that we’d win cuz of our kicker. I even said out loud, just get Ryan in range and he’ll bang it in. I mean sure I was a little nervous, cuz of how the game was going, we have bad Buc luck and he’d shank it, but that thought didn’t occur until we lined up and even then, it was just like a 5% chance that’d happen. Ryan has been money for us. Feels good

  10. Medicated Pete Says:

Paul Dellegatto told Pete that the jet stream dips down & runs thru the south endzone @ a 45° angle.

  11. Jason Says:

Pete’s not wrong. That’s the direction 90% of storms in this area seem to travel.

  12. Jason Says:

I meant Paul’s not wrong. My bad. Lol.

    Devin DiPalma,

ROFLMAO. Did you actually watch this team all last year?

Dean & SMB have been coverage liabilities for a long time. This isn’t something new to yesterday’s game. They been getting regularly TORCHED since they’ve been starters.

The Bucs 100% need to “make a move” of some sort to try and acquire an upgrade at corner. I would definitely pull the trigger and trade our 2022 1st Rounder for a solid corner now.

“They been getting regularly TORCHED since they’ve been starters.”

They’ve had some rough games no doubt, but it’s not regularly since they’ve been starters. In fact Dean, along with Carlton Davis, were both ranked top-20 cornerbacks last year.

Dean had a rough debut in Seattle a few years ago, but has mostly played solid since then. SMB played well last year when he was healthy, but def got torched a few times when he was banged up.

Also… ITS WEEK ONE. Everyone needs to calm tf down…

  15. Mike Says:

BA is smart, why does he give the information to opponents? It is too easy to conduct a study but you should not do it, Joe.

  17. August 1976 Buc Says:

    Succop > jinx/ head trip/ choke/ excuses

Anyone can say what you want about Dean, but we all saw what the Cowgirls thought about Dean and his scared coverage.

Why is Dean lining up and conceding first downs, getting easily beat repeatedly, when he has good speed?
It is not scheme, it is a lack confidence on Deans part.
BA did not beat around the bush, about it teams will attack the same way until the Bucs have answers for it.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  18. Alexander Nascimento Says:

Hey, Joes, congrats for your coverage!
I lost count of how many stories in the last 24 hours. Just amazing!

  19. Stanglassman Says:

Cockrell Ran a 4.39 at his pro day at Duke. Not too slow in any sense of the word.

  20. mark2001 Says:

The key will be the adjustments, particularly to the Defense. And I may be too trusting, but I trust Todd Bowles to figure out what happened last night, and make adjustments.

We had a great kicker once Martine Automattica. He was pretty much a sure thing. He was a tiny man but had a huge leg. His brother and Martine used to celebrate field goals like walk off grand slams. I thought it was funny and brought some extra passion.

  22. FrankPillow Says:

Not to diminish the proximate cause of a decade’s worth of failed kickers, but wasn’t the game winner kicked into the North (vs South) end of the stadium?

  23. teacherman777 Says:

Russ Cockrell ran a 4.56 at the combine.

What have I been saying since Johnathan Banks?

No more corners that run between a 4.5 and a 4.6!

    Only 4.2 to 4.4.

    That’s it!

  24. DungyDance Says:

I still remember Matt Bryant nailing a 62 yarder through the north end zone to take down the dirty Eagles with the game winner in the final seconds. Winning always feels good, the dramatic flourish right at the end made it even better, and stcking it to stupid “Philly fan” made it just fantastic. Granted, it wasn’t the south end zone, so who knows.
