Bruce Arians Confirms Interest In Richard Sherman

September 20th, 2021

Ex-All-Pro CB Richard Sherman.

So yesterday Tom Pelissero of NFL.com reported in the wake of starting corner Sean Murphy-Bunting being placed on injured reserve that the Bucs reached out to former All-Pro cornerback, unemployed Richard Sherman to gauge his interest in returning to the NFL.

In a follow-up report later yesterday, veteran NFL scribe Ed Werder of BSPN typed that Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht was going to wait on how the Bucs’ corners performed yesterday before making a decision to further pursue Sherman.

The results, at least for Joe, were a mixed bag.

Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians raved about Jamel Dean’s play. Just eyeballing the game yesterday, Joe felt backup corner Ross Cockrell struggled and he was fully schooled on a touchdown catch by Calvin Ridley.

Given the Bucs will face the high-flying Rams next week and the Belicheats the following week, both road games, Joe wonders if Licht will start texting Sherman or others?

Asked about the Sherman reports, Arians confirmed the team has interest but in a page from his predecessor Dirk Koetter, Arians pretty much said what Koetter would have.

Koetter was known to say about such matters, “That’s a Jason question,” referring to Licht.

“Jason reached out,” Arians said of the Sherman interest. “We’ve just got to see — he has other things going on, too.

“It’s just a matter of I coach the ones that we’ve got and let [Licht] handle the rest of that. We’ll kick the tires on some other guys too.

“It’s just a matter of, we’ll talk and see. And if its the right fit then its the right fit and we’ll move on it.”

Joe has to wonder if Sherman still has starting corner ability. Unlike Tom Brady, Father Time has been tapping on Sherman’s shoulders.

Then there is the matter of his well-publicized hassle this past offseason with the cops and his in-laws (same incident). Will NFL strongman Roger Goodell want to suspend Sherman first? If so, that will be a major consideration for the Bucs.

There is no question Sherman is a smart guy and his smarts are one reason why he once was a top-shelf corner. When a guy is 33, however, and is unemployed in September, there is usually a good reason.

Sherman was suffering severe depression. Really sad – I loved the way he played. With his psych issues, doubtful he’s in football shape.

I thought once Bowles took Cockrell out and played Davis, Dean, Edwards, Whitehead, and Winfield, things got much better. Obviously.

Trust JL and BA to do what’s best.

Regardless. Don’t see us beating the Rams. They are the best team in the NFC.

  2. Ryan T Baker Says:

I’d rather them sign Gareon Conley , the former 1st rd CB out of Ohio state who is still only 25 .

  3. adam from ny Says:

heavy duty personality to bring into a very chill locker room…

interesting, but be careful what you wish for…

  4. Ben green Says:

They’d be stupid no to work him out at least. No matter what shape he’s in it’s probably an upgrade from what you have

  5. Robert Says:

Sherman’s ego was nuts, for a guy who looked great for not so long a time period. for him to be saying he was better than Revis tells you he has not a lot upstairs.

you could say the same for AB, but he had TB on his back and helping him. Unless Sherman have CD as a mentor then I would say yeah….but his bark was bigger than his bite most of the time.

  6. Ben green Says:

Get his ass on the TB12 method and he’ll be turning handsprings before you know it. If it worked for that wretch of a human AB , it can work for anyone. Him and Alex have concussion water that’ll fix him right up also. What the hell to you have to lose? It’s superbowl or bust, so Ben seen no downside

  7. adam from ny Says:

    @Robert:

    who is CD?……….carlton davis???

lol he def is not gonna listen to that yung buck on any level

  8. WiscoJoe Says:

Joe- Any idea of other corners that could be available? It can’t hurt to add depth if the price is right.

  9. adam from ny Says:

maybe we can get keith tandy to suit up !

    🙂 🙂 🙂

  10. Ben green Says:

Depression? I’m sure Dr Guerrero can put the lust back in him. He’s probably got more CTE than Carter has liver pills. (Ben really dated himself) no prob. The cult of Tom Brady can fix anything

  11. Brad Says:

The reason he’s unemployed now is legal. He didnt leave at the very top of his game like AB, but he wasn’t bad only a year removed from an Achilles tear. It sounds like he’s already a Buc. This was the same talk as AB when the deal was done.

  12. Robert Says:

@ Adam……..thats my point. If he comes in thinking he is better than Davis (who is really coming into his own)…..and doesn’t listen and gives that I’m the best persona… then it is bad for the locker room. at least AB was greatly humbled…. I mean losing 30 mill in 6 month’….that guy knew what he lost.

I don’t think Sherman has that much of a reason to come in humble.

  13. adam from ny Says:

he was spotted in publix a couple hours ago grabbing some tasty chicken tenders 🙂

  14. adam from ny Says:

    robert…

sounds great and all, but i’d venture to say a veteran who probably thinks he’s a “hall of famer” is not coming into the locker room and being taken under the wing by any of our defensive backs…not a single one…

he’d have to really humble himself to fit in here…

    #ShermanIsDefinitelyAyeDudeWithAyeTude

  15. Ben green Says:

My mole tell me Brady is pushing hard for him. Same guy who told me about Brady’s knee. His name is Scott Z. Or S. Zolak either way. Ben can also see the future. I was stricken with the sickness after being kicked in the head by my uncle’s mule. It left me with the ability to see however far into the future I want to. The downside is it takes an equal amount of time off Ben’s life. Kinda like a tales from the crypt episode.

  16. JimmyJack Says:

Yes that Cockrell play in the endzone was beyond ugly. Our defense has to hold up a lot better in the redzone then we did yesterday. If that means we gotta bring in another CB then so be it.

Even if Sherman has lost a step if he can beef up our short field defense its worth considering.

@Joe , did I get blocked for something ? None of my comments ever show up anymore . I don’t (at least I don’t think I do ) say anything derogatory . Maybe an occasional “Where’s Ndog ? . I’d love to be able to chime in again .

  19. zzbuc Says:

Not sure sure if it´s Sherman or not…But god if we need some depth and quality on that positicion!!!!! By FAR the weakest poistion on this team

  20. Dave5928 Says:

Look at what the Bucs (and Brady) were able to accomplish with Antonio Brown. Sherman may be a tough case but Brown proves there can be a second life in the NFL if you plug into the Bucs/Brady way of doing things.

  21. Defense Rules Says:

Still can’t see Todd Bowles biting on Sherman at this late date; not the dominant CB he used to be. We’ve got plenty of talent, just need to tighten things up.

Off-subject admittedly Joe, but the Panthers literally took the Saints to the woodshed yesterday 26-7. Totally dominated the game from start to finish … Panthers 28 first downs to 6 for Saints; Panthers 383 total yds to only 128 total yds for the Saints; 38:32 mins TOP Panthers to only 21:28 mins for Saints. Carolina defense held the Saints to only 2-for-13 in 3rd & 4th down conversions, sacked Jameis 4 times, intercepted him twice & held him to 11 completions (50%). Bucs better not be assuming anything when we play the Panthers.

  22. EA Says:

Who remembers Frank Caliendo’s 30 for 30 parody “the rise of Richard Sherman ” ???
    Classic

  23. Ryan T Baker Says:

So after I asked about why my comments weren’t showing up , it pops up . Lol. Smh

  24. CChead Says:

Quinton Dunbar has a tryout scheduled with the Bills today. Could bring him in for a tryout. And Gareon Conley is another guy they can bring in.

  25. Listnfrmafar Says:

Only one call needs to be made and that is by TB12. Sherman and Brady have tremendous respect for each other. Sherman is very smart and talented, not sure if he fits Bowles defensive scheme but definitely an upgrade to what Bucs have. For years one of if not the most feared DB in the league. Work him out and see if his head is on straight. Swampbuc or should I say Swampass, Rams barely got by Indy last week with a backup QB. Bucs are.the best team in NFC but I wouldn’t take Carolina to lightly.

  26. Oneilbuc Says:

I say no because at some point you have to be a coach and do your job by coaching up the players you got on the team. I said it before BA don’t want to coach anyone he bought a superbowl . If you suppose to be this great coach than coach the players that’s on your team and develop them.

  27. Youngbucs Says:

😂😂😂😂I love this site some of these comments I swear.

  28. EEK Says:

Is there a penalty for working him out to see if he is fit?

  29. Bucfanforever Says:

Didn’t a couple of our bottom of the roster guys play pretty well in Preseason. Delaney and the other guy.

With a few games, they might be something

  30. Rod Munch Says:

Only question to me is if he can play or not — big thing is, can he run. If so, he’s a #5 corner, so why not take a chance on a formerly great player vs some practice squad guy who is never going to do anything. Give Sherman a look, if he stinks or is too slow, cut him.

  31. geno711 Says:

I guess I am one of the only ones seeing Sherman fitting in. Our base 1st down defense and Sherman are a true fit to what he did in Seattle all those years.

I really do not watch film of guys on other teams so whether he is too slow now at 33 who the heck knows.

All I know is that many of the best players on this Bucs teams are our older guys who have a lot of past top play history.
Suh, JPP, AB, Gronk, Succop, David and Brady. All over 30. So good older guys can still play.

  32. Swampbuc Says:

Consanant boy — do you actually watch games or do you just watch Disnet channel?

  33. Swampbuc Says:

It’s pure fantasy to put Carolina as a juggernaut, dismiss LA because a tough Colts team played them close, and assume the Bucs are the best but worry about Carolina over LA, SF, SEA ?? Did you happen to watch the Bucs in weeks 1 and 2?

The Bucs are defending champs from 2020. This is 2021. So far the pass game clicks 65% of the time, the run game not so much, the defense has sucked. Have you seen LA’s defense?

You must have some good drugs. Try psilocybin, it’s organic.

  34. geno711 Says:

To Oneillbuc, I disagree with you so much.

Since BA has come in here, this team has developed all of the offensive lineman – not some. D Smith is better, Marpet is better, Cappa, Stinnie, Jensen and Wirfs. That is all from some excellent coaching. 1st year guy tackle started every game last year and was one of the top three right tackles.
Tell me that can happen without good coaching. Jensen was close to being a cut casualty with the last staff. Who wants to get rid of him now.

This staff also made Winfield, Davis and White potential future and current stars on the defense by the way they coached them.

Devin White does not get 9 sacks in a season without coaching and development by our staff. Devin could not cover at all that 1st season. By the end of the 2nd season, he is making SuperBowl clinching plays but give no credit to the coaching.

Just disagree with your tired hate of BA just because he did not support your chosen QB. Can you really argue that BA was wrong to want Brady when he had a chance?

Further according to many of your past posts (at least 10), Brady was a noodle-armed quarterback that had nothing left and was just here to sell tickets. Apparently this coaching staff was able to coach the noodle right out of that arm.

Amazing coaching — So good that they even coached weakness out of Brady’s arm!

  35. Mike Johnson Says:

Sherman was a very good player. Intense as hell. But…his head is all messed up now. He is suffering from some kind of mental anguish right now Not a great idea to insert his personality into our locker room. I am sure there are some other choices available.

  36. Alan Collingwood Says:

I’ll bet Ronde still has some gas left in the tank…

  37. Swampbuc Says:

    Give Cedric Brown a call.

  38. Listnfrmafar Says:

Swampass, have you watched the first two Rams games???? Both Bears and Indy (back up QB) scored points on them. What has Stafford ever done? At least Goff made it to a SB. Stafford had a great defense and one of the best wr of all time Megatron. I will give you that the Rams will be very motivated but other than Donald & Ramsey that team and coach is overrated. Kupp is no better than Cooper, Ladies and Gage. Tighten up the secondary and Bucs will be fine. As for Carolina, didn’t say they were a powerhouse but they are 2-0 and just kicked the shat out of Onielbucsyall Winsten and Sean Payton, top 5 coach. Love that Bucs are -2.5 underdogs, I am more worried about the travel and let down going into New England. Keep drinking the Mcvay koolaid, he ain’t that good.

  39. Listnfrmafar Says:

    Sorry Lamb (auto fill)

  40. JimmyJack Says:

LMAO. Brady has a noodle arm. I remember that. What a maroon.

  41. MadMax Says:

Why not? I hated his mouth in his day, but fk it, lets do this Mr. Licht!

  42. Youngbucs Says:

    Geno711 excellent post facts matter!!!

  43. El_Buc941 Says:

We have better luck re-signing Brent Grimes.

  44. Wild Bill Says:

Don’t thinknthe bucs need another head case on the team. Doctor Brady is busy enough.

  45. gotbbucs Says:

Rather see young guys out there this early in the season cutting their teeth. Richard Sherman will still be walking the street in December if they want to take a look at him.

  46. Swampbuc Says:

Consonant boy — Rams are 2-0 and are a macthup problem for the Bucs. The Bears beat the Bucs’ ass last year as did the Rams, and the Colts are a good team and will end up winning more than they lose this year. The Bucs nearly lost to the Cowboys and were only up by 3 against the Falcons late.

You should throw your piggy bank at the Bucs this weekend, Consonant Boy. Bet them to win straight up. The spread is for wimps. Put it all down on the Bucs, since you’re so smart, and blind.

  47. Oneilbuc Says:

BA ain’t developed no body on this team all he does is ride around on his golf cart . Bowls is the one who is developing White and Davis, and the others on defense. When you look at the offense most of the players or veterans who are established already. And as far as the offensive line as long as Brady is on the team the refs ain’t throwing many holding calls against the bucs and that’s a fact. I know yall going to get all emotional but it’s the truth. We went from being the most penalizes offensive line that have killed drives and got touchdowns call back to having a perfect offensive line that never holds. But I know yall can’t see how certain quarterbacks offensive line never get call for holding like Brady , Rogers, Mahomes, Brees when he was playing even Russell Wilson they don’t many holding flags against their offensive line . So I know yall ain’t going to agree and some of yall gets disrespectful because you don’t agree but look at the facts and it’s not because they get the ball out fast every time. When Brady retire then we will back to being the most penalize offensive line in the NFL.

  48. Oneilbuc Says:

Geno711. I’ve said a bunch of times that I liked BA but people like you and youngbucs are just blind to the fact. Yall gets mad when someone tells the truth about what they see . Brady has played well but people like you want to ignore how many weapons they added to this offense for Brady. I still believe that you could have gotten a average quarterback to win with all these weapons. But yall try to make this team all about 1 player and I will never do that it will always be a team game. Just like what happened to Brady his last year in New England he didn’t have the players around him on offense but he played with a number 1 defense who got them to the playoffs and that’s a fact.

  49. Oneilbuc Says:

Oh and by the way I guess almost are what should have been a pick is not a stat anymore while we have Brady . But with the last quarterback almost , should have been would of have was a stat back then !! That’s why I say most of yall are so emotional and it’s fun getting yall mad !! Lol

  50. Youngbucs Says:

Sean Peyton the next coach to be considered trash wait and see.

  51. Listnfrmafar Says:

Oneilbucyall, your posts get worst and less factual. Bucs were most penalized team for half the season last year and guess who was the QB? Brady. It wasn’t until after the bye week team played more discipline. That’s what Brady also brought to the table. I will give Belichick that, he promoted discipline and you cannot win without it. That is why Jamais can’t win he is not discipline, he turns the ball over as he did AGAIN for NO this week. You also sound like Belichick thinking they could win with just any average QB. How is that working out for him? He has a losing record without Brady and looks like in 2021 he will continue to lose. Sad is your probably the only Bucs fan that wants to see Brady lose so you can ram a BELOW average QB Winsten down our throats. As for Swampass, Rams are a good team but they snuck by 2 teams with back up QB’s and that is a fact. FYI the Bears stink and will NOT make playoffs this season. Dak & Ryan are far better QB’s than the Rams have seen. Score Bucs 31-27

  52. Oneilbuc Says:

Youngbucs . If Jamies don’t play good in New Orleans then yes it’s on him . But yet and still this franchise still never developed a quarterback . Sean Payton is still a better coach than BA. BA time is just about over and he ain’t really coaching no more BL and Bowles are the ones that’s doing the coaching.

  53. Oneilbuc Says:

Listnfrmafar. Billchick won last week and again how many 15 ranked defense that Brady played with?? You see these questions you want answer because what ever the national media tells you that’s what you believe. And it’s a proven fact that holding calls are not call that often with those quarterbacks I named.

  54. Oneilbuc Says:

Listnfrmafar. You a Patriot fan you not even a real bucs fan !!

  55. TOM Says:

I would pass on Sherman. To much money. If still available I would consider S. Nelson or Breeland.

  56. Listnfrmafar Says:

Oneilbucyall? Patriots won because rookie QB Zak Wilson threw the ball around like he was playing in his back yard in a snow storm. I don’t listen to national media, I am a New England resident so I experienced all the drama first hand and Belichick is arrogant and wants nothing but complete control and down played Brady’s abilities for years. If you are still in doubt go back and watch the Atlanta, Pat’s SB, or any of them and see how much of a role BB played in it. As for 15th ranked defense, not many if any teams ever won a SB with that low a ranked defense, maybe KC two years ago. As far as Payton, what QB did he groom? It sure as hell wasn’t Bree’s he came from SD. Keep trying at some point you may come up with something worth reading but for now discounting Brady is reaching.

  57. Oneilbuc Says:

Listnfrmafar. Well now you are making my whole point and yes I can agree with you about the defenses. We agree on that and about the Brady thing I have never discredit him for nothing you have to give Flacco, Brad Johnson, Nick Foles , and other starting quarterbacks that was on teams that won superbowls. So yes I give Brady a lot of credit but I just don’t ignore the rest of the team. But I know my takes ain’t the most popular takes because they don’t line up with the narratives that people believes. Just like how they don’t throw holding flags for certain quarterbacks. You see people don’t like that but it’s the truth. Just like when I use to hear how Jordan got away with fouls and people got fouls called against them when they held him . I used to be just like you but at the same time we know certain quarterbacks gets calls that others don’t and that’s just the way sports are .

  58. Oneilbuc Says:

And Sean Payton developed Brees go look at Brees numbers in San Diego . That’s why the Chargers moved on from him and it wasn’t because of the injury. Yall just hate to give credit to anyone who you don’t like . Every quarterback needs a coach to help them develop. I mean look at Sam Donald so far compared to him in New York??

  59. Listnfrmafar Says:

Onielbucyall, how did I prove your point? Bucs were most penalized team for half of last season with the greatest QB of all time. And comparing football penalties to basketball is a joke. If you sneeze on LeBron or Curry or Hardon or any other premadona BB players it’s a foul. I refuse to argue anymore, I have been privileged to watch Brady for his entire NFL career through good and bad, two Giant SB losses and a Philly loss all of which could of.gone either way. So I say to you, watch and see because you have no choice, Brady will stick it up all you Haters backsides again for.the 22nd time. Ouch, that’s gotta hurt.

  60. Oneilbuc Says:

Listnfrmafar. You prove my point by talking about the defenses that all quarterbacks need to reach the superbowl. The only thing about yall is just because I don’t think Brady is goat you gets mad. I get it to you it was all Brady and nothing else with the bucs. But yes it ain’t no sense of arguing about it and I’m don’t hate Brady at all but I will never ignore the team he has around him. And when Brady leaves you leave with him and go root for your Patriots. The only thing yall do is blow smoke up Brady but and try to ignore the rest of the team. You a Brady fan boy !!

  61. Listnfrmafar Says:

So who do you think is the best QB ever?
