Will Gholston On Joe Tryon-Shoyinka: He Can Be An Everydown Player
August 25th, 2021Joe found it very cool last week when Devin White (Shark) said of rookie outside linebacker Joe Tryon-Shoyinka that the Bucs have established an elite standard for run defense and JTS cannot be a one-trick pony if he wants to be an every-down linebacker.
That’s leadership right there. White added he is looking forward to playing with JTS for years to come. In the meantime, ya gotta play the run.
Well, the guy with the second-longest tenure on the Bucs roster, Will Gholston, said yesterday JTS can be that every-down guy. He can rush the passer and, Gholston said, stop the run.
“I truly think he can do both to be honest,” Gholston said. “With that size, versatilely, speed, you see the wiggle, you see the bend like his knees touching the ground when he’s running, so I think he can be versatile at both. I wouldn’t label him just as a pass rusher, for sure.”
Joe would like to see JTS give a bit more effort on the run. It sure seemed like there was a run play or two from last week that JTS sort of gave up on.
With his speed, just one missed tackle or one move a back makes, JTS could be in position to make a tackle on most plays. Shoot, in training camp practice, Joe saw how Vita Vea raced down the left sideline to track down Ronald Jones from behind once.
If a big ol’ dude like Vea can put forth that kind of effort to run down a speedy back like RoJo, so too can JTS.

No player can avoid film evaluation. I’m sure if he is slacking at all, which we’ve seen no real indication thus far, it will be called out and called out loudly.

Our front 7 is gonna be extra nasty this season. 5 to 7 step drops won’t work against us

This is the second or third time I’ve seen run defense mentioned with this guy. Are we to assume he really doesn’t have those skills?

I might be wrong, but I think the last time the Bucs drafted a player with double digit sacks was Warren Sapp. Every other DL was either a free agent or traded for.
