“They Should Have Lost That Game”

August 4th, 2021

Hated faces

Yet another retired quarterback, this one a five-time Pro Bowler, is convinced that the slimy Saints are about to get a lot more dangerous.

Former Bucs arch rival QB Donovan McNabb, the five-time Pro Bowler, was one of Joe’s favorite analysts until he was fired following the NFL Network’s notorious sexual harassment scandal of 2017.

McNabb (same age as Tom Brady) remains a great listen on all things NFL. He visited CBS Sports Radio last week and, like ex-Bucs QB Shaun King did, McNabb jumped head first into the Jameis Winston bandwagon. And he seems to think the Saints may be better than the Buccaneers.

On the Bucs beating the Saints in the NFL Divisional Round playoffs last season: “They should have lost that game,” McNabb said. And McNabb said the evolved working relationship of Jameis and Sean Payton, combined with the benefits of Jameis’ corrective eye surgery will mean the Saints will spread the field more and open up its offense more than they did with Drew Brees.

Yeah, McNabb is sure Jameis will win the starting job in New Orleans.

Of course, McNabb dropped the unavoidable one-liner while talking Jameis: “if he protects the football.”

Joe is already so sick of this escalating Jameis-Saints chatter. It makes Joe feel dirty and disgusting.

Jameis isn’t better than 2020 Drew Brees. The Saints weren’t the better team on the field with the Bucs in January. And Joe is certain the Bucs will improve more this season than the Saints will.

Jameis didn’t have an eye problem as much as he had a decision-making problem.

  2. Player 1 Says:

I think of that 3rd Saints game similar to the ’02 Bucs beating Philly. Both f them were the hardest game of the season and both of them gave our Bucs the confidence to move on to win it all.

  3. Youngbucs Says:

😂 yo if I hear about lasik 1 more time

  4. Mort Says:

Jameis is better than 2020 Drew Brees. I’ll say it even if you won’t.

  5. Joshua porter Says:

    Saint’s suck

  6. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Hey go watch the second half of the 9ers game where jay miss played.

He didn’t look good at all.

  7. Jason Says:

Joe is already so sick of this escalating Jameis-Saints chatter. It makes Joe feel dirty and disgusting.

Is that because you anointed him “America’s Quarterback”?

Sorry Joe. You kinda walked into that one. Lol.

  8. AtlBuc Says:

I agree that Jameis is better than 2020 Drew Brees. If a quarterback cannot stretch the field, he is not a threat. If Jameis would have replaced Brees, we would have a more difficult time with their receivers.

  9. huh Says:

    2020 Brees was washed….

  10. Tye Says:

Just paid analysts paid to talk up football to create interest…
The chances of JW playing completely different than the last 7 years is slim to none!….. Under pressure he will revert back to his horrible instincts… lob it up and hope for the best…. Doubt he starts the entire season!

  11. Rayjay1122 Says:

The Saints did lose that game though because they should have lost it. No way the Saints are more talented than the Bucs. Comical but hey, McNabb has his opinions as well.

  12. Godlovesbucs Says:

Jameis will do what jameis does. He will look great and terrible all in 1 quarter. They don’t have the overall talent to hang with tampa. They are in cap hell with a roster of a few superstars and no depth.

  13. Buczilla Says:

Jameis is what he is. A couple of times a year he may look like a sure bet hall of famer. He’ll look like a third string rookie in 3-4 games and the rest he’ll just look average. I’ve never seen a quarterback with his resume all of a sudden become consistently good. He is the Jeff George of his generation.

  14. yahoo Says:

Winston now has the best coach in the division so he should improve.

  15. FrankinATX Says:

The score dictates who is the better team

  16. Jerry Says:

Yeah. Just like the clown analysts that claim the Packers would have won if Rogers would have just ran it in himself. Or that the Chiefs would have won the Super Bowl if their OL wasn’t banged up. Etc, etc…

    whoulda, coulda, shouldas….

  17. Joe Says:

if Rogers would have just ran it in himself.

People who say that really believe Rodgers could outrun and dodge Devin White??? (Go look at that play on YouTube — 1:30 mark — White would have crushed him.)

  18. gotbbucs Says:

Winston won’t begin he season there as the starter.

  19. Destinjohnny Says:

That’s not an objective point of view about Winston

  20. ucommon Says:

Probably shouldn’t take the opinion of a qb who didn’t know there were ties in football too seriously…

  21. WillieG Says:

JW won’t start for the entire season. I bet he starts the first 6-8 and gets benched. SP will say all the right things but he will be looking to draft a QB or trade for one hallway through the season.

  22. GhostofSchiano Says:

2020 Brees had some serious injuries prior to the playoff run. “IF” big IF he had not been injured who knows. But that’s football, injuries happen, next man up and the Bucs were ready.

I want to know when (not if) but when Jameis makes a poor choice off the field how much it will impact the Saints. He still appears to be immature.

  23. BillyBucoff Says:

All you guys saying Jameis is better because he can stretch the field, that may be accurate, but you are forgetting an average of almost 2 picks a game.
Who cares if the receivers are more dangerous. Doesn’t mean they will score!!
Remember the Moenken pitch and catch?
    That was Jameis.

I’ll take 2 pick sixes with more receiving yardage any day of the week.

Jameis is better than 2020 Drew Brees. I’ll say it even if you won’t.

    ……………..\
LOL dumbest comment of the calendar year so far!!!

  25. Pewter Power Says:

Sounds like mcnabb is still salty about the Bucs shutting down the vet. Talk to me about Saints being more dangerous than the Bucs in week 8 when thomas makes his return against the Bucs even though I’ll still laugh about that question then too.

If they make the playoffs imagine having to Trust Winston to deliver a victory😂😂😂

  26. Nutbucer Says:

Brees came back for 2020, Brady went to his 2nd choice. Thank you forever DB9. For your efforts we have gifted your old team JW. He’s a little skinny, that’s just because he only eats W’s. Enjoy!

  27. Jerk04 Says:

Anybody worried about Jameis and the saints just need to watch the video on Twitter right now of Winston doing a drill. It’s must see and will have you cracking up and reassure bucs fans there is nothing to worry about.

Even saints fans are scared and laughing watching this video

  28. The Red Mirage Says:

Endorsements form Shaun “Burger” King and Donovan “50 piece” McNugget. Hard pass, unless those guys are telling me where to get a sandwich or a pizza I’m not interested in anything either one has to say.

  31. SlyPirate Says:

Jerk04 … OMG! That is funny!

Joe, you need to post this video within this article.

  32. ModHairKen Says:

Well, we will know in about 22 weeks, won’t we?

Why does everyone get so worked up about this former Buccaneer QB? He failed here. He may succeed elsewhere. Like Dilfer, who won as many SBs as Brees and one more than Marino.

Let it go, Joey. Let it go.

  33. Cobraboy Says:

Two decades later, McNabb is still butthurt…

  34. Buc4evr Says:

Eyesight isn’t Jameis’s problem. Recklessness and impulse control is. The guy makes bad decisions which translate into interceptions and fumbles. Loads of talent but risk taking that tanks the team. Can’t wait to see what is in store for Saints fans. Lol.

  35. Oneilbuc Says:

McNabb is a hall of famer the only wr people know is T.O that he threw the ball to. He didn’t get enough time with Jackson and he still went to 5 NFC championships and 1 superbowl with a hurt T.O . He was another quarterback who was a victim of his unconsistic defense. He won MVP before but he was hated amongst the media because of his comments. And look James is in the hall and who was his quarterback Payton Manning . James won a buck of those games that Payton Manning got credit for . But if you were born in the 90s you wouldn’t know that !!

  36. PassingThru Says:

If I had one game that I considered a “must” win, I’d take Brees over Jameis. Being a quality QB isn’t just a function of arm strength, it’s about the decisions they make.

  37. Winny Testaverde Says:

Another QB around Brady’s age who gagged away multiple chances while playing for ( Burger King ) the Bucs or vs them ( Chunky Soup spokesman ).

  38. DaBux Says:

    McNabb???????? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  39. All lives matter Says:

If McNabb is basing his opinion on JW’s eye surgery for one main reason why there may be a JW resurgence then I want to know why Mr. Squinter didn’t get it done while he was with the Bucs for five seasons. Five wasted seasons.

  40. D-Rome Says:

If I was a Saints fan I’d take a washed up Brees than Jay-Miss any day. You can’t win with a turnover machine and he’ll never change.

  41. Seattle Buc is back in TB Says:

Jameis will hold the ball longer than drew

  42. EA Says:

J-Dubb couldn’t win the starting job last year when Brees got hurt please. This guy is the same goofball that got Lovie and Koetter fired that the whisperer himself couldn’t straighten out.
If winston starts for the aints I give Payton no more than 5 weeks before he pulls the plug on him.

  43. Coburn Says:

Wasn’t the only reason they even got up early was mainly because of a bad special teams play and the flukey trick play with Jameis? We def deserved the win and were the better team. Don’t think that changes with jameis..

  44. Tampabaybucfan Says:

And just think. When Jameis comes to Tampa on 12/19, it will be like an extra home game for “America’s QB”…….wit all his cheering supporters…..maybe he’ll be confused and throw the ball to several Bucs that night…..or, maybe he doesn’t need to be confused and will do it naturally.

  45. Tackleblockwin Says:

    Dear Donovan McNabb,

    Ronde Barber.

    Sincerely,
    Bucs fans

  46. m0j0 Says:

The Saints best QB played in that game and they lost. You really think Peyton or any coach would start Winston over Brees?

  47. Rod Munch Says:

“Jameis isn’t better than 2020 Drew Brees”

Wrong. Brees was pretty terrible last year, he couldn’t pass more than about 10 yards downfield.

The Saints aren’t going away, and personally I don’t care. The Bucs are 0-4 vs the Saints in the regular season in years they win the Super Bowl.

  48. Greg Says:

IMO the Saints will get the same JW the Bucs had through five seasons and we should be finished with this foolishness!

  49. Tc Says:

The guy is dangerous with that offense and a good d that can bail him out.

  50. Crickett Baker Says:

IDK, Finally Winston had some people to teach him how to be a QB. I am worried about him to the point of almost being scared. However, watching him on that tackling machine and knowing our defense calms me down.

  51. Doctor Stroud Says:

DM is STILL mad about that NFC Championship game!

  52. kgh4life Says:

“They should have lost that game” and the Eagles should have beat the Bucs in the 2002 NFC championship game, you can’t be serious? The Bucs was the better team that day, that’s why the Saints lost, plain and simple. I can’t believe Mcnabb is an analyst.

  53. TheShaz Says:

Jameis has the tools to be a great QB.

Except the most important part. Decision making.

His INT’s were not a vision problem. It was a decision making problem.

Maybe Peyton can fix some of it, but I doubt it.

  54. Wild Bill Says:

The opinions of a “used to be” are about as appetizing as stale bread.

  55. Buc50 Says:

You guys act like McNabb didn’t break our hearts multiple times. The guy spent time in the league and none of you have. Give the guy some respect. Maybe he knows what he’s talking about.

  56. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Really?
Brees couldn’t throw it 10 yards or a little more last season?

    Really now?

  57. Youngbucs Says:

Oneilbucs whts up bro Mcnabb had some beast defense on his teams sorry.

  58. Youngbucs Says:

And running backs also he couldn’t get it done.

  59. PassingThru Says:

Yeah, Jameis is an upgrade from Brees.

That’s why he replaced him last season, right?

  60. Drunkinybor Says:

Utter nonsense!! They will be good only IF… IF it’s and Buts were candy and nuts everyday would be Christmas. Donavon drank too much the night before his lone Superbowl appearance was to nervous and puked his guts out in the huddle late in that game. Way to lead!! It’s crunch time we need a leader. Donavon your the best q.b. in the league Bahhhhhh!! Vomit!!!! Bahhhhhh. Belch..fart.. cry. Then vomit some more..🤮 I don’t have a speck of respect for that front running cry baby

  61. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“Jameis isn’t better than 2020 Drew Brees.” – Joe

    There’s an understatement.

But Jameis has it in him to be great some day. Will he be? We’ll see.

But let’s be honest…if he somehow manages to learn to protect the ball…does anyone here really doubt he can excel? I sure don’t.

Sean Peyton might be the right coach for him. I suspect Brees retired because he felt he was leaving the Saints in good hands.

    All of the said…

…they won’t be better than the Buccaneers.

  62. Bruce Blahak Says:

WinSTUNNED and Softy McIcecream storys. We’re in training camp, come on, stop picking old scabs for us lol. Any Stuard and Britt sitings?

  63. Hodad Says:

Let me think, 7 time SB winner Tom Brady or Jameis Winston? I like Brady, and the Bucs chances better, thank you.

  64. Bobby M. Says:

Jameis is Ryan Fitzpatrick 2.0….he’ll give you flashes, even a solid season here and there but the overall body of work will always look the same.

I think the issue the Saints will have every week is stopping opposing offenses….which will put them into playing catch up or in shoot outs. That’s going to be completely counter productive to trying to minimize Winston’s screw ups. As his attempts go up, his wins go down and turnovers skyrocket. I imagine Payton will try to manage the clock with Kamara running/screens but if teams focus on shutting him down, then they have to throw and that’s a scenario most teams will be happy to battle.

  65. Wayne Perez Says:

It always amazes me how idiots who never won anything are such experts

  66. Cobraboy Says:

@BB: Brees retired because his body told him he was done. He should have retired one year earlier, but wanted one more run at a Lombardi.

Had nothing to do with ATM.

The only time “Brees” and “Winston” should be mentioned in the same article is of the article is about the Saints 2020 QB roster.

    Beyond that, zero in common.

Cliff Notes version: Brees wins because he is smart. Winston loses because he is dumb.

  67. BrooklynBucsFan Says:

If Jameis problem was that he couldn’t see, then he should’ve worn goggles under the helmet. And if that’s the reason he threw so many INTs, it’s just another example of his lack of maturity. But, I don’t think the vision was the reason he made so many stupid throws, that I blame on his general bad decision making. It’s pervasive with him, makes bad decisions on and off of the field, like eating a W in the picture above, what a childish and ridiculous thing to do. When it happened, it was another reason I knew we were right to have moved on, and that’s even in the context of losing the game. And if Donovan is right, why hasn’t Jameis already won the starting job? If he’s so much better than he was, why hasn’t he already wrapped up the QB competition? He had a whole season to show he’s better than a WR that plays QB and hasn’t done it yet… gimme a break haha.

  68. Listnfrmafar Says:

Once again Oneilbucyall trashing another white HOF QB, one of the best that ever played. E. James is the reason Manning won games? Nothing to do with his receivers? Oh not only did McNabb have great defenses, he was throwing to Mitchell, Westbrook, Chad Lewis, Reggie Brown, Avant, Pinkston, Torrance Small, James Thrash not to mention Jackson & TO. How can a QB NOT win a SB with those receivers. Compare Brady’s past receivers and Manning while on Indy’s defenses to Eagles & McNabb, oh almost forgot Andy Reid as coach. I don’t get why McNabb us in HOF, it seems to me he is a big choke.

  69. Oneilbuc Says:

Youngbucs . He had some good runningbacks like Westbrook and Staley. But when you back and look he didn’t have what some of the other good quarterbacks had that’s what I’m saying.

  70. Oneilbuc Says:

Listnfrmafar . Yes I’m from Texas that’s how we talk out here we say yall . Again you had to go look that up because unless you a Eagles fan no one knows are remember none of those guys maybe Westbrook and T.O. James average almost 1,500 yards a season and we ain’t gone talking about Payton Manning receivers who are also hall of famers Wayn will get in soon . Payton Manning was a great quarterback but to me Brady was better back then. The media treated Payton Manning like they treate Brady today. They couldn’t stand Brady when Payton Manning was in his prime. Brady have always given credit to his teams even back then and they hated him for it . So what are you talking about lol 😆😂.

  71. Oneilbuc Says:

Joe Montana had Roger Craig who was the first runningback to have a 1,000 yards rushing and a 1,000 receiving yards. All hall of fame quarterbacks had players like that on their teams. And that’s a fact!! And I believe he’s a white quarterback!! I think you have some racial issues and I believe you live in Boston I could be wrong. And every body know that Boston is probably worse than the sout now days!!!

  72. Listnfrmafar Says:

Oneilbucyall, I do remember those receivers I was in a fantasy league for almost 15 yrs. Your post stated that James was the major contributor to Manning’s success and he was not, he was a great RB but second level to guys like Payton, Campbell, Sanders, Williams, etc, plus he was often injured. Off our topic, anyone who believes Winston was better than Bree’s in 2020 did NOT watch the two regular season Bucs vs NO games. Bucs defense was relentless the 4th quarter of the playoff game that’s what closed the door on them. To mention Winston in the same sentence is an insult to Bree’s. Guy came back from a punchered lung and played with a bad rotator cuff and Winston still couldn’t beat him out. Easy 2 wins 2021 for Bucs.

  73. Im not tired anymore we Super Bowl Champs!! Says:

Funny stat is both times we won the Super Bowl we lost to the Saints twice during the regular season. I also believe it was the season opener in both years as well in New Orleans. Go Bucs! Glad we beat the Saints!

  74. Youngbucs Says:

QB is the most important position in team sports!!!!!!

  75. Youngbucs Says:

Glad we have the greatest QB of all time!!!!!
