Joe loves this analogy.
Bucs fans have all seen the hunger oozing from savior young linebacker Devin White.
On the field sometimes, he’s like a drooling dog awaiting his next command. White can’t wait for the next play and to eat up the next running back that dares to enter his zone.
Former Pro Bowl defensive end and Tom Brady buddy Willie McGinest sees how White operates and believes he’s “The Great White because he hunts like a shark, with great patience while processing information quickly.”
McGinest continued: “His reaction time is unbelievable, as is his ability to track players, and the coverage skills he showed last year were perhaps better than those of anyone else on this list [of inside linebackers]. He is tenacious and embraces what it takes to be an elite off-ball linebacker. You have to love this guy’s mentality.”
The McGinest quote is from NFL.com and was part of a ranking of the top-10 “off-ball” linebackers in the game.
White ranks second, per McGinest and Lavonte David is No. 9. (Hey, there’s another guy who doesn’t think David is a Pro Bowler.)
White has all the tools and skills. Now he just has to show them for a complete season.
Joe’s not sure White has that much consistency in him, but if he does, then he’s certainly Defensive Player of the Year material.

So who would be the number one guy on the list? David is #9? Poor guy just never gets put on top where he belongs….. it’s too bad really!

Miller, it’s probably Bobby Wagner who has been riding on his reputation for a few years now. Great player at one point but not as good as his reputation these days.

Fred Warner is another guy who gets too much love in my opinion. Decent linebacker but his stats don’t measure up to Whites.

That might of been true in the playoffs but he was not the most amazing in coverage in the regular season. Like these KC and GB fans, these Natty’s that don’t know nothing Bucs are too easy to spot.
On the other hand, Lavonte took the best LB coverage rating. Has held the highest lb in coverage percentage since 2016.

Joe’s not sure White has that consistency in him? He’s only going on his third year Joe, I think that consistency will be the next step. This year he’s really going to know what he’s doing, I think he plays lights out the whole year.

Wagner is still getting credit for things that he did 5 years ago. Warner is a Barrett Ruud clone and doesn’t come close to deserving the props that he gets. David should be number one, but at least this dude got White right at number two.

Devin didn’t really get pass coverage until New Orleans in the playoffs. He could phenomenal this year.
