Saints Sign Former Bucs Guard

August 2nd, 2021

“Jason, I thought you got rid of this man?”

Provided he is healthy, there will be a return to the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway for at least one game for fan-favorite guard, J.R. Sweezy.

If he sticks with his new NFC South team.

Sweezy is with the slimy Saints now. Sean Payton got him.

Sweezy was one of many lowlights of the Lost Decade. Not that he played terribly in 2017. He was solid on the field.

But since Bucs fans were so fed up with the constant losing, Sweezy became a target because his first season with the Bucs (2016) was washed away due to a mysterious back injury that happened in a weight room after he signed as a big-money free agent.

Sweezy, who is a good dude, absolutely refused to discuss his back injury. Anything else he was happy to talk about. But not about his back. That was verboten. And as always, silence about an issue invites speculation. And boy, did Bucs fans speculate.

The biggest conspiracy among Bucs fans, given that Sweezy was mum on the subject, was that Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht signed Sweezy with full knowledge of his back injury.

Of course, this was and is preposterous. If true, Licht wouldn’t be here. But since Sweezy, and by extension the Bucs, clammed up about the injury, it had the scent of something being swept under the rug. You know, a cover-up.

This only fueled the conspiracy gaining traction with some fans, red meat for the conspiracy wolves. It was a great case study of a fanbase being turned off by losing and grasping for reasons why the team was mired in last place in the NFC South almost annually.

Joe got along great with Sweezy. But thank God those days are behind us.

Lol. Guys an asshole Sean you can him.

  2. Garv Says:

Frankly he never WAS a Buccaneer. Not if actually playing football with the team matters.

  3. Bojim Says:

    He’s still playing?

@Joe: Which god do you mean?

  5. SlyPirate Says:

    I agree with Garv.

Guys like JR Sweezy, Chris Baker, Alvin Harper … wore Bucs gear and collected a check but they aren’t Bucs.

  6. DaBux Says:

He’ll make sure Jaeeeeemis is running for his life.

  7. Leighroy Says:

A dollar says he never plays a down and is on the PUP list within 4 weeks.

Sweezy was one of the few bad moves Licht made on the OL. Never upset me he got hurt……Thats just part of the game.

What rubbed me raw was that he was a compmete failure of expectations here for high dollar then he went right back to Seattle for a team friendly contract afterward. As a Bucs fan you pretty much feel used. But what else is new? Sweezy was past of the Lost Decade after all.

Not sure what the Saints are getting here. Usually dont find much in August. They always got a good Line so this sounds like a depth move. Probably not a bad move.

  9. Kentucky Buc Says:

The grassy knoll is getting pretty full.

I was excited when he was signed he came from Seattle if my memory is right. He was a instant disappointment but that’s in the past. Most disappointing player in free agency is still to me Carl Nicks from the Taints. He got paid played a few games and he was done. He was a 2 time pro bowler a 1 time All Pro. He just couldn’t get healthy. He only played 9 games for us out of 32!! When he was signed he was the highest paid guard in the league and had a massive 31 million signing bonus and this is back in 2012. Sigh oh well he came to Tampa to retire I guess.

What a racket. How you can stick around season after season collecting $1000’s while getting free medical and never have to take a game-time snap.

  12. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Any washed up former Bucs player going to the Saints, I’m all for it.

  13. Winny Testaverde Says:

The Sweezy Swindle definitely was a skid mark in the skivvies known as the lost decade. Here’s hoping Suh and/or Vea knock the chocolate outta him if he actually plays. Payton growing desperate after 4 playoff failures in a row.

    Which god do you mean?

The higher authority that oversees football.

  15. Pick6 Says:

Looks like he has played in 44 of the last 48 games since leaving Tampa Bay….not sure how well or how many snaps, but we appear to have had him for the worst stretch of his career. Typical of the Morris\Schiano\Smith\Koetter wasteland

  16. Pine Hills Says:

    The Aints can have him.

  17. Pine Hills Says:

And, hey, pick6, Morris could have been a good coach.
    I always liked that guy.

  18. Mike Johnson Says:

My man, Easy Money Sweezy. When he was here, I always said, he got his money for nothin and his chicks for free.(lotsa money too!) He went to Arizona, played pretty decent. Now hes in Saints camp. I hope they..work the Sh*! out of him. He never gave us anything but smiles, spin, and bambozzlement.

  19. D-Rome Says:

I was thinking, “OH NO they signed Carl Nicks?”

  20. Nick2 Says:

I am with D Rome and the nightmare of Carl Nicks and Mersa came to mind JR Sweezy was the last thing I was thinking about. Wow how times have changed. What a transformation since the days when Raheem Morris roamed our sidelines and the Bucs were the laughing stock of the entire league. Now we are the envy or the entire league. GO BUCS!!!!!!!!!!
