Roller Coaster Sequence For Tyler Johnson

August 1st, 2021

UPDATED 11:25 a.m.: Rough few minutes midway through practice today for Bucs receiver Tyler Johnson, who reported to camp out of shape, per Bucco Bruce Arians.

In 11-on-11 red zone work, Johnson made a sick one-hand, over-the-shoulder touchdown grab of a Tom Brady pass. Whether he had his feet in bounds is unclear (no officials on site) but it was quite a display of talent.

Soon after, Johnson made a non-spectacular grab, and then came an uh-oh moment with the reserves.

Johnson went in motion from right to left. Kyle Trask saw Johnson run past him and position on the left side. Trask promptly waved Johnson back to the right side. Then Johnson got to a spot and appeared confused. He looked back toward coaches and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich already was approaching him to set him straight.

The pass play eventually went to Tanner Hudson in the back of the end zone. Slightly overthrown with Lavonte David in coverage.

Joe thinks it was no coincidence that after halftime, when the Bucs go into the Glazer Shed for five minutes to cool off, the first throw of 11-on-11 work with the first team went to Johnson. He made the catch over the middle for about six yards with Jamel Dean in tight coverage.

After practice, Arians didn’t mention Johnson by name but talked about young players and too many receivers not making plays and having mental errors. Scotty Miller seemed like an offender late in 11-on-11 work with the first team.

Joe wonders how Bucs higher-ups are feeling about Johnson today. Yeah, it’s early.

No way the Bucs give up on Tyler Johnson this year unless he is god awful terrible.

  2. Biff Barker Says:

Like Vaughn, we all hope he doesn’t melt down while waiting his turn. Talent is not a question mark, attitude might be.
Playoff Lenny now understands the side effects of a stacked roster.

  3. Bucs&Bolts Says:

Not concerned doubt he sees much of the field this season but he needs to get in shape

  4. ModHairKen Says:

Well, he made a mistake. CUT HIM IMMEDIATELY!

No. It’s practice. That’s why it’s called practice.

    Come on, Joeski

  5. Defense Rules Says:

Bucs have 8 players who are only 22 years old. Two of them are starters (Wirfs & Winfield). The remaining 6 (including Johnson) are backups. For a reason I suspect: lack of experience. Got a hunch that the majority are still learning how to take care of their bodies, how to study, how to practice, etc.

Tyler Johnson showed some pretty good talent last season in limited duty. Good size (6’1″ & 206 lbs), good hands, excellent route-running & decent speed/quickness. I think the Bucs got a steal last year (5th Rnd pick) based on what Johnson showed in college. As you said in your bottom line Joe … “It’s early”.

  6. Tc Says:

He came in as a fat cat. He probably figures he will not play much this year and enjoyed the spotlight of the super bowl. Too many free dinners, lol.

  7. JA Says:

Took a drive to Minnesota last December to visit my wife’s father. We stayed in a nice hotel, one of the long haul places with a full kitchen.
One day when a desk clerk spied my Bucs hat he mentioned that Tyler Johnson had lived there for two months after he was drafted.
When I asked if he was a good kid, the clerk said, “He’s the best. The Bucs sent a shipment of expensive healthy food nearly everyday and he gave it all to us.”
When I asked why, the clerk stated he was strictly a junk food guy, but still a “great dude.”
Let’s hope he breaks the habit. Porker wide receivers don’t last very long in the NFL.

It’s his first real NFL training camp. He’s getting quite the education on how to be a professional. I’m encouraged that it was Trask who saw the problem with the formation and got TJ to the right spot on the field…

  9. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Come on TJ.
You have the talent, but coming into camp overweight and confused makes me think you might need to pee in a cup.

  10. SOEbuc Says:

So what you’re saying is, he made a bomb ass TD from Brady. And then there was bad communication and an overthrow by Trask??? NEED TO KICK TJ TO THE CURB!!!

  11. SteelStudBuc Says:

    Excellent Intel JA

I got a buddy who eats strictly junk food. When he gets a pub burger he always takes the lettuce and tomatoes off… he says, “That stuff will kill ya!”

  12. Medicated Pete Says:

Massive red flags everywhere w/ this guy right now. No excuse for a WR being a lard ass

  13. BridleOaks Buc Says:

I can’t remember if Tyler attended the OTA’s and minicamp…I remember BA saying back then, when guys didn’t show up to OTA, that there are at least 8 players who think they’ve already made the team. Is TJ one of them?

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Bet he’s already lost the weight…..

Don’t be surprised if TJ is our # 4 WR next year…,

    Evans, AB, Darden & TJ.,,,,,,Scittt # 5

Where’s Godwin? You ask..well, he wants to be paid more than Mike…..just isn’t going to happen…..

    Sorry Joe, but what?!!

  16. webster Says:

Oh no johnson made one mistake at practice. The pied piper joe strikes again. He writes a mountain out of a mole hile article and the sheep who have never been in a practice come out to dump on a player. Smdh.

  17. Buckaroo Boozie Says:

Much ado about nothing… as usual 🙄

  18. firethecannons Says:

the Bucs higher ups are likely impressed with the one handed behind him catch

maybe it was Trask who played a part in the fck up we really need to get a one on one with Tyler to find out

    Lol!

  19. Greg Says:

“… talked about young players making too many receivers making not making plays and having mental errors…”

  20. JimmyJack Says:

I think most of us like Johnson for his raw ability but we might be seeing the first signs of why he was avialable in the 6th round.

@webster&ModHair……..The problem is its not one mistake. First he skips out on the OTAs and was pretty much called out by the coach. Then he comes into camp out of shape. Now this?…..These are just 3 examples we know about. No telling if there are any other issues that are private.

Just saying the signs arent looking good early on with this guy. Bruce does want guys that have a high give-a-spit meter. So I dont think its wise to write off things like this as no biggy.

  21. Pewter Power Says:

There are plenty of guys in the league with the talent, they all have the talent but be realistic how many have the desire and work ethic to be thrive for greatness and how many will use that talent to do just enough to be good and coast their entire career happy to be in the nfl. It’s a thing now to be ok with being average

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Michael Clayton 2.0

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“too many receivers making not making plays”

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    JimmyJack…..5th round…

We have done well lately with later round WRs…….Watson, Miller, Johnson…..

  25. Crickett Baker Says:

JA that was a really cool encounter. TYVM for sharing. We shall see if TB12 changes his mind about food. He is pretty young yet and can still learn new tricks.
