Package In Place

Rookie edge rusher Joe Tryon

Those who listened to the Ira Kaufman Podcast earlier this week heard of Joe’s private chat with former NFL offensive lineman Brian Baldinger when he visited Tampa Bay training camp.

Baldinger had tough critiques of Blaine Gabbert and rookie O-lineman Robert Hainsey. But Baldinger did more than talk to Joe while in town reporting for NFL Network.

Speaking on air this morning, Baldinger talked about how he had a private chat with Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles. Per Baldinger, Bowles already has a package of plays for rookie edge rusher Joe Tryon.

Yes, Tryon has shown enough to warrant that kind of respect from coaches, even if he’s struggling against the run.

The various positive signs coming out about Tryon — small and big — have Joe doing cartwheels on St. Pete Beach.

Just imagine what the Bucs’ pass rush looks like if Tryon can successfully eat some snaps from the old legs of Jason Pierre-Paul and rack up, say, 7 1/2 sacks in the process.

    7 1/2 would be a great number.

  2. Medicated Pete Says:

Just being a rabble-rouser is good enough. Vita Vea doesn’t get sacks but he had Aaron Rodgers terrified

  3. Defense Rules Says:

I appreciate Baldy’s opinions a lot. If he’s down on our rookie OLineman Robert Hainsey, the young man better step it up. Not the kind of attention you want, even as a rookie.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If Tryon struggles against the run then put him in on passing downs until he’s ready for the run.

The problem is…..since the Bucs are so good against the run….every down might be a passing down.

I think Baldinger thinks Hainsey isn’t built up as he should right now…Legs and rear not heavy and muscular enough. A year of weight room work and some meals with Tyler Johnson, or even better, Shawn King, should do the trick….

    Package =‘s training wheels
Cite BA’s he needs to play is assigned role each play first and not go all hero , because OC’s are looking to make him look silly.
Even if his “Package “ is 3 rd and long if he doesn’t understand the BIG picture he can get snookered .
All that said I think he be fine and turn into a good pick and weapon.
Guy simply doesn’t have that many snaps since high school

  7. Biff Barker Says:

    Mark2001 lol.
King’s little hands were working overtime packing his piehole.
Gives three a day’s a whole new meaning.
Maybe some of the extra fat migrated up and between his ears thinking JW would have an all pro season.

  8. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Tryon is going to be the steal of the draft. If he didn’t miss last year of college, he might have been the first edge rusher to be drafted. Only time will tell.

  9. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

I love what I have been reading about Tryon, but 7-1/2 sacks for a situational, part-time rookie might be a bit of a dream. Didn’t the rookie stud DE in WTF only get like 8-1/2 this past year playing full time?

Not criticizing Baldy, as I love his takes, but I am not worried about Hainsey. Licht picked him and Licht’s record for Olinemen is spectacular.

  10. mark2001 Says:

He needs to do what Cappa did. Transform his shape. And our big coaching staff will make sure he gets into position condition.

  11. Wild Bill Says:

Opinions are like xxxx. Everyone has one. The guy takes a one day look at a rookie and decides his future? Many a great football player has had a less than outstanding physical appearance.

  12. Buczilla Says:

LOL, with the bar set ultra low for rookie defensive ends last year with Chase Young and his massive 7.5 sacks, Tryon should be in the hunt for DROY for sure if he can match that number right? Look, I know that Smith played damn well last year, but the second coming of Reggie White (Young, according to braindead sports media) should never lay a goose egg against Donovan. Winfield done got robbed man.

  13. SlyPirate Says:

Stopping the run in Tampa Bay is what they do.

The Bucs have been #1 against the run since Bowles arrived. He know how to coach it.

    # of concerns about Tryon learning to play the run = 0

  14. Joe in Michigan Says:

Buczilla STILL has his panties in a bunch over the DROY…I’m happy that the Bucs WON THE SUPER BOWL. Remember that?

You know it just doesn’t work that way, right? People don’t just decide to bulk up part of their body and it happens in an offseason or ever.

  16. Mike Says:

I know this might be crazy, but I am hoping for JPP, Shaq and Tryon to all get double digit sacks.

  17. BRYAN KOHN Says:

    Tryon is a stud!

He can really collapse the pocket and there is no one better than coach JPP for that kid. See if he can show up. I’m begging for another slam dunk in the first round.
