Best Five Linebackers?

August 29th, 2021

Lethal addition.

Joe has been saying this for about a year now.

Prove Joe wrong.

Is there a better foursome at linebacker than what the Bucs have? Think about it: Bucs sack king Shaq Barrett, Lavonte David, Devin White and Jason Pierre-Paul.

Now throw in rookie outside linebacker Joe Tryon-Shoyinka.

After balling out in the final nonsense football game until next August (thank God!), JTS was dominant. Adam Maya of NFL.com said the Cowboys, and the rest of the offenses that will face the Bucs’ linebackers this fall better look the hell out.

The rich are richer. The Buccaneers boast arguably the best linebacker duo in the NFL between Lavonte David and Devin White. Rookie Joe Tryon-Shoyinka looks determined to make that true among trios as well. Since he arrived at training camp, the 2021 first-rounder has demonstrated a motor that surely endears him to his positional peers. His final rehearsal before his regular-season debut was no different, with Tryon-Shoyinka tallying a forced fumble, a sack and two QB hits. David matched that effort by recording eight tackles in the opening quarter. White was able to play a complimentary role Saturday, which says it all about this group.

As Joe wrote last night, this JTS has gotten better and better with each preseason game. And man, should he help the Bucs.

Think about it: JPP is no spring chicken. Even though he’s healthy, he turns 33 on Jan. 1. With a 17-game schedule, Joe envisions JTS easing the load quite a bit for JPP and Shaq so they can save snaps and be fresher for the playoffs.

Is there a team in the NFL with five better linebackers than the Bucs? No way.

Prove Joe wrong.

    Prove Joe wrong.

Why would I want to do silly thing like that?

  2. Alexander Nascimento Says:

    You are not wrong, Joe

  3. DaBux Says:

Silly Joe, BSPN says (Fill in the blank with something negative about our Bucs).

  4. IrishMist Says:

Hopefully, we come into the season with no major injuries. For a second, I thought Gabbert might have gotten Miller’s arm broken with that throw into triple coverage, but I saw Scotty come back out for 1 play afterwards. And it was a relief to hear Rhonde say that Whitehead was dealing with a hamstring. I was worried that he might have reinjured his shoulder. Edwards can fill in for a couple weeks until the hammy heals.

From the “suckaneers” to the “letalneers” in a blink of an eye!…if this is a dream; please don’t wake me up.

  8. Seattle Buc is back in TB Says:

All 5 of these guys on the field with Vita and Su, thats the best front 7 in football.

  9. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

I don’t know how the Bucs are going to do it, but BA and company are going to have to be creative and put all five LBs on the field at the same time. Perhaps one less safety playing on 3rd down?

  10. mark2001 Says:

Rotation…keep JPP and Shaq fresh. And then allow the hottest guy to feast.

  11. View from 132 Says:

Looking like a quality pick. Before the season starts, would be fun to project what the 2024 Bucs look like… a lot of young studs like Joe T-S will be very good NFL players, a lot of legends like Brady and Suh, JPP will have moved on.

  12. Mike Says:

JTS is a beast and it almost seems unfair to be able to add a guy like that to the existing talent pool the Bucs have at LB. And I tell you what, Britt played like a man last night too!

  13. adam from ny Says:

    he just keeps balling out…

    the kid is nice

  14. mark2001 Says:

I’m going to think of him as Myles Lite. Until he really makes a name for himself.

  15. ocala Says:

    He looks incredible!
    It is very exciting!

  16. Cobraboy Says:

@Alabama: Add Suh and Vea to those five, and that’s the D front.

  17. Marine Buc Says:

We also have the best wide receiver room in the league… Prove me wrong. lol

  18. adam from ny Says:

in preseason he was moving at a different speed than most everyone out there between the white lines

  19. ManzielMadness Says:

I just want to take a second to take back every bad thing I’ve ever said about Jason Licht… he has been absolutely on fire with his draft picks as of late!

  20. Bird Says:

    No doubt about it

Stacked . And JTS has shown up in run game too
They can do 3-4 and 4-3 looks with JTS if they want. Dude is a freak
And i have a feeling JPP wants to prove the rook who the alpha is.
And shaq wants def player of the year

Line up 5 on the line on third and long

    JTS / shaq/ jpp/ vea / suh

Maybe JTS or JPP drops cause they both can. Or maybe they dont and a jailbreak occurs.
You know bowles is in his lab right now constructing different looks
Should be fun season if we can stay relative healthy

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I agree with Licht’s improved draft picks….but it coincides with the entry of Todd Bowles.

  22. Buc1987 Says:

I heard they got few good weapons on offense too!

  23. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Joe Tryon is going to be a beast in the NFL for many years.
Not to change the subject, but did anyone see that block by OJ Howard that sprung ROJO ?
That was a thing of beauty.

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Since Bowles

White, SMB, Dean, Edwards, Nelson, Winfield Jr., Tryon

7 young players that will be the strength of our Defense going forward.

    And….before Bowles…yes, I’ll give credit to Licht for Vea, Davis & Whitehead….

    That’s 10 young players….our defense is set.

  25. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Cobraboy Says: “@Alabama: Add Suh and Vea to those five, and that’s the D front.”

Let’s not forget, Will Gholston led the team in QB hits.

  26. TOM Says:

I also like Tryon a lot but don’t forget about Minter. He’s pretty good in his own right.

  27. Defense Rules Says:

@TBBF … “I agree with Licht’s improved draft picks….but it coincides with the entry of Todd Bowles.”

Agree wholeheartedly TBBF, although I really do think it’s been a much-improved collective effort these past 3 drafts since Bowles has been our DC. The guys who’ve been drafted starting in 2019 (White, SMB, Dean, Edwards, Winfield, JTS especially) fit the type of hybrid defense that Todd Bowles runs to a tee. I’m still hoping that a 3 others (Davis & Nelson & Britt) come on strong this year, but there’s a LOT of talent in front of them.

Even the FAs who we’ve picked up since Todd’s been here have shined. Guys like Suh & Shaq & Cockrell have really done very well in this defense. And it sounded to me like they came here largely to play for Todd Bowles.

  28. DalvinCookRules Says:

Depends on what you mean by “LB”. I would consider Barrett, JPP, and JTS as more rush LBs/hybrid DEs. These 3 aren’t guys you really want in coverage, for example. So, maybe they are the “best” in some sense, but it isn’t a useful thing… a more meaningful comparison would be to compare our front seven versus the rest of the league’s

  31. BerrickDrooks Says:

shown more flashes than the entire Noah Spence project

  32. Anonymous Says:

Berrick….we were all doing so well…having such a good day…and then you had to say the words Noah Spence.

  33. Sigh.. Says:

Wrong? We’d have to go back to the draft where you threatened suicide if the Bucs were stupid enough to draft Devin White over the edge rusher (Allen) who’s better they got by signing JPP using no pick at all.

    You wrong? Never!

  34. Anonymous Says:

Rogers may want to come when Brady leaves

  35. Red86 Says:

This guy reminds me of Jason Taylor. Hopefully, he stay healthy and produce.

  36. Brandon Says:

Edge snaps can and should be divided 2/3. 2/3, and 2/3… this will keep them healthy and more effective.

  37. David Says:

I know it’s semantics, but I have a hard time seeing Shack and JPP as outside linebackers. They are edge rusher‘s Who drop back occasionally

  38. teacherman777 Says:

    Amazing pick.

A stud 3-4 OLB with the last pick of the 1st round?

All because he sat out Covid.

    Awesome. Just our luck!

I think God wants America’s Messiah Tom Brady to 3-peat.
