“I Can’t Finish It”

Jason Pierre-Paul

Is there a Joe Tryon lesson here?

Joe asks that question about the Bucs’ first-round pick because of the Jason Pierre-Paul story shared during the latest episode of In The Current, the Buccaneers.com production, aka the team’s in-house and sanitized version of Hard Knocks.

Pierre-Paul is featured about two-thirds through the chronicling of last season, though it’s unclear when Pierre Paul’s quotes were obtained.

First, he’s seen falling in a pass rush drill against Donovan Smith and getting up to tell Shaq Barrett, “I can’t finish it,” referring to the move. “I don’t trust my sh**.”

That “sh**” is JPP’s knee.

“I think I’m about probably 75 percent and have been playing like 75 percent this whole year,” he said. “You know, they did a knee scope in the offseason, probably mid-July and came in August and from there I just went straight on and played football. It’ll probably take like six months for the knee to heal. But, you know, knowing me, it’s whatever.”

Yes, JPP had a great season, was the Bucs’ only Pro Bowl honoree, and he’s pissed off that he didn’t make All-Pro.

Tryon had a knee scope around 10 weeks ago. And while it’s easy to say he’ll be fine for training camp and guys often recover from those within a month, the reality is unclear.

Do the Bucs need Tryon to win another Super Bowl? Possibly.

While that might seem like a wacky take. Joe knows the Bucs are hoping Tryon will be their rotational third edge rusher behind Shaq and JPP. That’s often a critical role.

Joe’s intrigued to see how much work Tryon gets in preseason. If it’s a heavy load, then it’s a safe bet he’s healthy. If it’s not, then Joe wouldn’t be shocked to see the Bucs potentially chase a veteran edge guy somewhere around Sept. 1, just for a little insurance.

Pure speculation on our part at this time, but I personally think Tryon was a pick for the future more than the now.
That being said, his production and progression will be closely watched this year no doubt.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Joe Tryon is a BUOLBIT Back Up Outside Line Backer In Training…..

He will share a few snaps with Anthony Nelson….and perhaps they will get more this year depending on game situations.

    Cam Gill.

If you don’t know who Cam Gill is, you’re in for a treat. Shaq clone in every way.

Got a sack in the Super Bowl. Perfect fit for Bowles’ defense. He can take the load of the OLB.

  4. Swampbuc Says:

SlyPirate – agree on Cam Gill. Dude is fast and flashed a couple times when given the chance. He’s the sleeper no one is talking about.

  5. SOEbuc Says:

He’s 75 percent all the time and dusted your boy Donny on the edge before he fell over. I don’t remember, but if that seen was not shown simultaneously with him talking about his knee, that could of meant many things other than his knee or being able to trust it. I’m not trying to hate. I hope the world for Donovan Smith this year, but he needs to prove two $40 million contracts to me. He had a few hit and miss games down the stretch and played well in the playoffs. That does not make him a top tier LT. Especially with a bunch of other top tier olinemen to help on the line. You got Marpet and Jensen on the inside and you still lead the league in penalties??? Come on dude. I’m not a hater or some kinda bandwagon jumper. Just gotta prove it to me Donovan. LFG!!!

  6. Miller5252 Says:

I hope ole JPP can be around 90-95% for the year. I would make sure he’s getting all the reps he needs but then keep him on the sideline so he can stay healthy and strong. Our new UW end needs to be pushed to the limit and with good offensive lineman to go against and good DE mentorship, he should really turn up to be a good player IF he’s any good. As for Donovan…. If what he said was true, then having a full year to be comfortable in his new stance and blocking scheme he should earn his coin. Having JPP and Shaq coming at you all the time should make Donovan and Wirfs all pros.

  7. Pewter Power Says:

Not a wacky take at all and I see how you connected the dots. Tryon is a rookie, young and will much faster than jpp at his advanced football age. I need the best 4 in on pass rushing downs and tryon ain’t proved he’s on that level yet so he’ll have plenty of time to rest and recover after Bruce over works him in training camp and preseason

  8. Joe in Michigan Says:

SOEbuc: Wow, JPP beat D Smith on a practice rep? JPP has been one of the best pass rushers in the NFL, D Smith is just okay.

  9. JimmyJack Says:

Theres really no reason to doubt Tryon. Our draft track record speaks for itself. Licht and co. know what there doing.

  10. gotbbucs Says:

There’s a decade worth of NFL football on JPP’s knees. Tryon has one year of PAC 10 football on his. Big difference.

  11. Craig Says:

Hopefully it will all work out, we are going to need new blood sometime soon. Best to train them up when there is so much talent to learn from.

  12. David Says:

What I took from this is… JPP goes into this year healthy!!!
That’s awesome. That plus the fact that Shaq is determined to return to the sack leaders looks good for the D line!

  13. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

There shoulda been 4 guys in the Slo Bowl ! Hopefully JPP is healthy this time and Tryon learns a lot in TC and is healthy also.

  14. pick6 Says:

If tryon is solid on the edge, JPP will spend a lot more time abusing guards on the interior. He could be something close to a starter sooner than people think

  15. teacherman777 Says:

We should have doubled down in the 2nd round.

Instead, we got a 4th string QB.

If the coaches and front office thought the same way please tell me why we spent a 1st on Tryon when Shaq’s clone was on the roster?

    @Brandon
I think… Having two good things is always better than just one!
Remember, this was a “luxury” draft.
    Gotta luv it!
