A Better Bucs Offense

July 2nd, 2021

Improvement predicted.

A guy who very likely watches the Bucs no less than twice during the regular season actually believes the Tampa Bay offense could improve this fall.

Imagine: A team that averaged over 30 points a game through 20 games and won the Super Bowl and its offense may be better? That’s what a guy with three Super Bowl rings on his hand believes is very likely.

Former Giants, 49ers and Broncos receiver Ed McCaffery, father of Stinking Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey, co-hosted “The Opening Drive” earlier this week with Solomon Wilcots, heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

The former NFL veterans were breaking down the NFL’s best offenses. Predictably, they believe the Chiefs will have the best offense. And while both selected the Bucs as their No. 2 offense, McCaffrey made it clear the Bucs may easily be No. 1.

Yeah, sure, park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, smartphone-phobic, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing, roller coaster-scared, numbers-rules-peeved, Bucs-Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady was still getting comfortable last year with his new team, new teammates and new surroundings.

McCaffrey believes that was a factor last season, but McCaffrey also believes Mike Evans and Chris Godwin were sort of held back as they were not 100 percent healthy.

Joe guesses technically, McCaffrey is correct that Playoff Lenny was added during the season as he arrived after final training camp cuts.

“Last year maybe they were seventh in yards,” McCaffrey said of the Bucs. “They did score more points per game than the Chiefs did. The reason I agree with you (Bucs are No. 2) is that at times, Tom Brady looked out of sync with some of his receivers, Godwin and Evans. Godwin and Evans both had little injuries. Godwin had a big one by the way. He was impressive with that broken hand and playing through that.

“If those guys are healthy, his two receivers are actually going to be better. And Antonio Brown they signed, sitting out for a year [got some playing time] under his belt, he had a touchdown in the Super Bowl.

“So you are looking at Evans, Godwin, Brown. With a year to get ready with those guys and a really stacked up backfield — by the way [Leonard] Fournette did not join them till during the season so now he has a year under his belt. [Ronald] Jones is healthy. Bernard is a possible third-down guy. [The Bucs have] a solid offensive line.”

The offensive inconsistency the Bucs had most of the season, McCaffrey claimed, was as much or more about Evans and Godwin being banged up than Brady learning on the job.

But let’s think about this for a moment. A team averaged over 30 points a game through 20 games, scored 31 points to win a Super Bowl, yet was “inconsistent.” This is why McCaffey believes one of the best offenses in the game could be better in 2021. He thinks their inconsistency should be gone.

Well, remember that on a few occasions this offseason, quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen claimed the Bucs were eight games from peaking when they won the Super Bowl.

This should be a scary good Bucs offense.

He forgot to mention the TE’s force….Gronk, OJ and Brate, can be scary…..
On paper I think they are BY FAR the best offense….

    Fun fact of the day.

    2015-2019 (80 games total) – Bucs scored 40+ 4 times.

    2020 (16 games total)- Bucs scored 40+ 4 times.

Bucs offense did not get into sync until halfway through the season.

  5. Medicated Pete Says:

Ed is by far the worst host on NFL Radio. They put his boring ass on bcuz his kid is an injury prone white RB that has a massive hillbilly following

  6. Casual Observer Says:

The biggest worry could be keeping all those star receivers happy with the number of catches in a game. Only so many plays to go around. Have to check the egos at the door. Brady and Arians are up to that task – but it won’t be easy for some.

  7. Ron says Says:

This year the offense will be on the field much longer and be able to extend drives the continuity of the offense will be much better and with the add of Bernard as a outlet pass receiver and our TE’s plus the running game should be more solid. It is going to be hard to get us off the field and a defense that can shut down or take away will give us a strong edge in field position. The other thing that makes us better is we have even greater depth on the offensive line so this team should be ready to dominate. I can’t see another offense being more dominate they might get numbers because we shut down opponents much quicker, but I don’t see one that can even come close to matching us.

  8. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I think we will be even better this year because Brady will have more time in the system, and the addition of Bernard is gonna give Brady the sure handed safety valve he lacked.

Joe when do we get a post on the offensive accomplishments. You can start with the current win streak and work on down. You know like fewest turnovers in franchise history!!!!! Just wrote about the latter four days ago. https://www.joebucsfan.com/2021/06/celebrating-bruce-arians-on-field-dream/–Joe

  12. PSL Bob Says:

Are you kidding me? Let’s break this down.

QB: Brady vs. Mahomes. Non partisan analysts would probably give this a toss up.

RB: Rojo and Fournette vs. Edwards-Helaire. Advantage Bucs

TE: Gronk, Brate, and OJ vs Kelce. I’ll take our depth over one good player.

WR: Evans, Godwin and AB vs. Tyreek Hill, Calloway and Hardman – we win all day.

OL: SB champs vs SB chumps

After the 2021 season is over, I don’t think there will be any question, which team has the better offense. The Bucs will win in a landslide in what could be the greatest NFL offense of all time.

  13. Miller5252 Says:

I truly believe if Brady is finally 100% comfortable with the playbook and on the same page as the receivers, you’re gonna see the best offense ever in the NFL. I guess I would have to say everyone staying healthy as well, but they really do have a chance to smoke the greatest show on turf hands down. The league better watch out because it could be a route almost every week if the above is true!

  14. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

If they can produce 70+ offensive plays per game they won’t have a problem feeding everybody.

  15. Bucshot Says:

Records will be broken…… both on the offense and defense! GO BUCS!

  16. Defense Rules Says:

Bucshot … Records exist to be broken, but some records have stood for quite awhile. Example:

o Most points scored per game in regular season: 37.9 PPG average by the 2013 Denver Broncos (they’re also #1 in total yards per game with 457.3 AND #1 in passing yards per game average with 340.2).

o Fewest points allowed per game in regular season: 10.3 PPG average by the 2000 Baltimore Ravens in the modern 16-game era. Seems bizarre but that team won a Super Bowl despite going 5 straight games without scoring an offensive TD. THAT’S defensive dominance.

Those are some lofty goals to shoot for, but again, records are made to be broken.

  17. Bush's Coke Spoon Says:

Pete. That was kinda funny. Don’t let the haters slow you down!

  18. Jason Says:

I think the ppg record on offense is the more likely of the 2 to be broken. I don’t know if there is a point differential record, but if there is, then that is one I think will probably get broken.

  19. Sol Says:

The Buccaneers offense should be all the things already mentioned and
the team that was number one last year will be working with two new tackles.
The question will be, with a 17 game season, Can Tampa Bay be the first
team to have 6000 yards of offense this season? After 5 games that will be the question all over the NFL. You heard it here first.

  20. SlyPirate Says:

Bucs fans all know this …

    Add:
    1. The offense will have a new dimension with Giovani Bernard
    2. The Bucs defense will start the season better
    3. Special Teams is upgraded

  21. Scott Says:

And, Brady played the season with a bad, now repaired, knee.

  22. stpetebucsfan Says:

@SB Healing vibes and quick recovery dude!

Tom Brady got to prove the naysayers wrong last year with his deep ball attack. It showed that he was more than a dink and dunker to little WR’s and RB’s out of the backfield.

And so Brady running BA’s offense was freed to bombs away and TB12 showed he was more than up to the task. With AB, ME, CG and Scottie the Bucs had a typical BA aerial circus.

But still when you think of TB12’s great years with NE what do you think of Brady in his greatest years. Randy Moss’ three years aside you think of Welker and…KEVIN FAULK! Kevin Faulk was a superstar who was an integral cog in TB12’s offense.

What was the one thing missing from last year’s offense? Great WR play…great TE play but RB as receivers out of the backfield…mediocre at best and clearly the weakest link in what would be a normal TB12 offense.

Enter…Giovanni Bernard…now TB12 not only has all those great targets…he has a comfort blanket in Bernard and this will also ease the job for our OL.
Brady will have the ability to unload to the outlet when it gets too hot. Bernard will work hard to make sure he’s where Brady expects him at all time.

This combo could actually shock the league because let’s face it…Bernard is not a fear invoking name right now…but he did have three 1,000 yard total production seasons evenly divided between runs and receptions.

Last last year Bernard rushed for 416 caught another 355 and had 6TD’s 3 rushing and 3 passing. He is incredibly balanced! I think we all believe he’s here to be TB12’s Kevin Faulk out of the backfield. But like Faulk Bernard can run some too.

Yes I agree a year’s experience, no Covid, TB mastering BA’s offense it’s all good. But watch out for Bernard. This may be a case where an old star nearing the end really shines and he will most definitely improve the Buc’s offense.

    ___________

The football savant strikes again…the same guy that doesn’t think Rojo (5.1 YPC) isn’t much of a runner, thinks a soon to be 30 year old runner with two bad knees, three straight years of poor performances, and fresh off being cut from one of the worst teams in the league… is going to give the offense a… NEW DIMENSION… we saw that dimension. A RB that catches the ball, offers nothing after the catch, and can’t contribute as a runner. We had that guy last season in McCoy.
