Predicting A Season Record

June 29th, 2021

Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians

Joe will soon fly to Las Vegas for an annual summer trip.

This didn’t happen last year and it will be this Joe’s first time flying since The Sickness. So Joe is starting to do a bit of research on season-win totals.

You know, because.

Jared Dubin of CBS Sports seems to think the Bucs are a playoff team that will squeak out the over (based on William Hill’s season-win projection, which is over/under 11 1/2.)

An undefeated season like some are talking? Not gonna happen, not even close, Dubin believes. In fact, Dubin sees the Bucs losing five games and toying with the top seed in the NFC, but you can tell he’s not overly impressed by Tampa Bay.

Here is how he sees the losses happening:

Week 3: Bucs at Rams
Buccaneers lose 27-21

The dream of a perfect season on the way to a repeat Super Bowl title comes to an end in Week 3. Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey dominate their matchups with the Bucs’ interior offensive line and Evans, respectively, and the Sean McVay-Matthew Stafford combination keeps the Tampa pass rush off balance enough to move the ball throughout the game.

Week 8: Bucs at slimy Saints
Buccaneers lose 24-21

… The Bucs hold a 21-7 lead at the midway point of the third quarter but a surprise onside kick from Sean Payton helps New Orleans tie the game, and then win it in overtime despite not being the first team to possess the ball.

Week 10: Bucs at WTF
Buccaneers lose 17-14

In a defensive battle between two of the very best units in the league, the Football Team’s front four dominates the proceedings, forcing Brady into two fumbles and an interception. Antonio Gibson gets loose for a long run and Curtis Samuel scores on a jet sweep, helping the Football Team overcome Ryan Fitzpatrick’s erratic performance against Tampa’s pass rush.

Week 12: at Colts
Buccaneers lose 24-23

Tampa loses a heartbreaker on the road in a decidedly strange game that sees the Colts score two special teams touchdowns. …

Week 14: Bills at Bucs
Buccaneers lose 37-31

In one of the most exciting games of the year, Brady and Josh Allen go shot for shot all game long. The wide receivers on both teams dominate all afternoon …

So basically, Dubin has the Bucs losing to every decent team they will play.

Joe honestly doesn’t see how WTF beats the Bucs. Rotten Ryan Fitzpatrick? Really?

Joe is leaning toward 13-4, perhaps better. Certainly better than what Dubin is guessing.

We start 7-0, first loss @ New Orleans in week 8 to a motivated Payton and Jameis. We lose a revenge game to Fitzmagic and the Football Team after the bye. We recover with two straight wins against the Giants and Colts, before dropping what will be our final loss in a surprisingly tough battle at the Falcons. We finish strong with 5 straight wins to end the season, earning the playoff bye at 14-3. GO BUCS (AND BOLTS)!

  2. Bojim Says:

    14-3

  3. Rayjay1122 Says:

Jared Dubin….bwahahahahahahahahahaha. Well everyone has an opinion even when they are so stupid that most sane individuals laugh out loud at them. Plenty of tools in the shed at CBS seemingly.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I am in exact agreement with Joe…..we beat the WFT…..not sure about all the other losses/wins….but think we will go 13-4……and will win the top seed by 1 game over Rams.

  5. 813bucboi Says:

    undefeated!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  6. D-Rome Says:

That’s such a strange, specific prediction.

  7. Defense Rules Says:

Predicting season records might be fun, but it’s obviously incredibly subjective. How good will our opponents REALLY be this year? (Anybody’s guess at this point). How badly will injuries affect us? (They’re a fact of life in the NFL & some teams get zapped more than others). Oh and how about the refs? (They’re far from perfect & we’ve had years when a lot more calls went against us than went for us).

One of the biggest ‘intangibles’ though IMO is BIG PLAYS. Majority of NFL teams are quite closely matched & a LOT of games’ outcomes come down to BIG PLAYS. A turnover here, an explosive run there, an impossible catch for a TD thrown in for good measure … big plays like that are often turning points in particular games. And sometimes in the season. They’re impossible to ‘count on’ BUT … some players (like Devin White among others?) seem to have a knack for coming up with BIG PLAYS when they’re needed most.

BTW I’d personally be happy with 11-5 IF it wins the NFC South (which I think it will) and gets us into the playoffs. It wouldn’t get us the #1 NFC seed though IMO, and thus we’d have to play FOUR playoff games again (instead of getting an extra week of rest & only playing 3). BUT … I’d take it to get into the playoffs. Once in, anything can happen. Ask the 2020 Bucs.

  8. Jason Says:

That’s the type of stuff I daydream about after smoking a fat one (with the Bucs going undefeated, and breaking the scoring record of course).

Dubin must have the good stuff. Lol.

  9. Kalind Says:

Some of those losses are silly. Jaboo is gonna beat us? Get serious.

    The WTFs?? No. Just, no.

Frankly. I don’t see us losing o Wentz and the colts either. They won’t be able to run and Wentz can’t beat you by himself.

I’ll take the Rams and Bills. That’s it.

  10. alton d green Says:

This is really funny to read. Ever meet someone that hates to commit to a decision??????? Who in H%#@ is this Dublin character??? Got to be a politician. As a 6 decade fan, I can spot this bi-polar decision maker a mile away. Keep your bloomers on, i’m not making fun of bi-polar. I see 16-1 assuming most stay healthy (especially Brady)

  11. August 1976 Buc Says:

20 – 0 Someone is going to do it and this Bucs team is as capable as any team that includes the Chiefs the Bucs trashed in the Super Bowl.

Brady is playing for history, do not kid yourself and think he is not.

Undefeated Season 20-0 to cap off a 28-0 run and back to back Championships.

GO BIG BAD AZZ WORLD CHAMPION BUCCANEERS

  12. Steven007 Says:

Should I assume that WTF is being used ironically here? As opposed to WFT…

  13. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Seriously – Dubin has us losing to the Saints. The Saint will be lucky to have winning record this year.

  14. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

I love seeing people be like “Lose to this team?? No way!!” Super Bowl Bucs lost to the Bears last season. Chiefs lost to the Raiders and Chargers. Not exactly good teams. Meanwhile, WFT made the playoffs, played decent against us, and likely improved in the offseason.

It’s the freaking NFL. Any given Sunday! If wins against lesser teams were automatic then there would be no point in playing them. Upsets happen practically every week.

  15. August 1976 Buc Says:

BTW any one touting Buffalo, lol lol they could not even keep up with the Chiefs in scoring so how will they keep up with the Bucs offense, Child Please…. And the Bills just do not have the pass rush to slow down Brady and this Buccaneer Juggernaut of an offense.

    Let’s get real, prognosticators.
You have to score at least 30+ in a game against the Bucs. And with this defense growing that is a major challenge. It is not going to happen for WFT, or the Rams or Dallas… They will get worn out.

Again you had better score 30+ baby just to have a CHANCE against the Defending World Champs

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  16. rriddler Says:

I bet the over when I was out there last month. Also got 7-1 on them winning it all. (Side note, I also got the Rays at 25-1 to win the WS before they started their winning run.)

  17. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Honestly, the only game that concerns me is the Rams.
LA is a long way away, and they have the pass rush to effect Brady.
The Bills will not beat us, but will keep it close, and anything can happen up in Indy.

  18. Rico 210 Says:

    20-0 till it ain’t so
    Go Bucs

  19. August 1976 Buc Says:

I am with “20-0 Rico” lol

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  20. Bucs Bro Says:

I can definitely see the Bucs losing to either the Rams, Colts, Bills, Saints, or maybe even the Patriots. But not losing to every good team they face. That’s just lunacy

Bucs O line DOMINATED the WFT front, I see them as a over rated bunch.

  21. Bucs Bro Says:

    13-4 or 14-3 and a 1 or 2 seed in the NFC

  22. SufferingSince76 Says:

The guy is off his rocker. No way Bucs lose to the Saints and Washington. Just continued disrespect.

  23. mark2001 Says:

Honestly, barring injury, I see anything under 13 as being pretty silly. An extra game, with an easier schedule, should set up at least twelve wins. A more mature defense, and a team offensively all on the same page…which we weren’t during half the season…I see 13 as quite reasonable.

  24. Ne+ bucs fan Says:

Steven 007,,they lost a trademark rights,,so now there called the WTF

  25. Ne+ bucs fan Says:

    My opinion,,12-5

  26. Ne+ bucs fan Says:

No,no,have to change my opinion,, LOL 13-4 after looking at the schedule

  27. sasquatch Says:

What kind of idiot is seriously predicting scores before teams have even gone to training camp? Dude needs to find a hobby.

  28. SlyPirate Says:

The Bucs … the defending champions with all starters returned … can’t beat one single good team?

    LMFAO

    That is total disrespect.

Someone send that to TB12 and LVD.

  29. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Opinions are like as&holes. Everyone has one.
Alvin, talking in the 3rd person, continues to predict 14-3!

  30. Craig Says:

    Who’s Jared Dubin?

Seriously, why is his opinion better than mine? I say the Bucs-Bills game is going to be great, and Allen will be corralled. Other than that every other team will be trying to catch up and pull a Jameis out of their hat.

The Bucs defense is going to have a blast this season and the offense isn’t going to slow down for anyone or anything.

  31. Buxszntkt Says:

Gotta hand it to this dooosh, writing out these specific ways which other teams will pull out victories well before the season starts. How did this get past his editor ? Or is it so slow his editor praised his ludicrous explanations of how these games turn. Poor Joe having to spend time reading this craaap.

  32. Buczilla Says:

Add Jared Dubin to the long list of national idiot sports writers that I will ignore unless the Joes post something from them. Aaron Donald is a key to victory for the Rams this year?!? He failed to record a single stat against us last year and I don’t see him doing a whole lot this year either. The rest of his reasoning is comical at best and he’s damn lucky that someone thinks his opinions are worth a paycheck. 😋

No way in hell that we are going undefeated (my genius self also predicted that Brady would never come here, so take it for what it’s worth). We will split with the Saints because Sean Payton will figure out a way to beat us at least once despite Jameis as his starting quarterback. 15-1 is my prediction since Brady won’t face a single qb that’s better than him this year.

  33. Wild Bill Says:

I disregard all the win/loss projections by anyone. Nobody has a perfect crystal ball and predicting the future may be a fun exercise but opinions are like xxx’, everybody has one. Most of the “experts” never excelled at anything but bs. I think we have a team that is tough, gritty and talented. And they should make the playoffs. Barring key injuries they have a good shot at repeating. But in a long season there are too many random variables that can effect outcomes. Looking forward to a long exciting season and love that the Bucs are realistic contenders after so many sad seasons. GO Bucs!!!!
