Just Get To The Quarterback!
May 27th, 2021Bucs outside linebackers coach Larry Foote knows what it is like to play in big games. He’s got two rings playing for the Steelers to prove it.
There is a famous NFL Films clip from before Foote’s days with then-Hall of Fame coach Bill Cowher taking Steelers edge rusher Greg Lloyd aside in a playoff game to implore him to find a way to blast the quarterback.
“Hand in the dirt, three-point stance, standing up, I don’t care,” Cowher told Lloyd. “You get in whatever you feel like to rush the quarterback, understand that? Rush the quarterback. You understand? Rush the quarterback!”
Foote sort of paraphrased Cowher today in a Zoom press conference when he discussed how rookie first-round pick Joe Tryon will butter his bread with the Bucs by getting to the quarterback.
And Foote doesn’t seem to care how Tryon accomplishes that.
“In a 3-4 system, you make your bacon by getting after the quarterback,” Foote said. “He’s comfortable rushing from a two-point [stance] or with his hand in the dirt. He does fine.
“We are going to ask him to do both at times (rush from a two-point stance or three-point stance). Whatever you are most comfortable with, do it. … Whatever he is comfortable with, just do it.”
That’s Joe’s attitude as well. Joe doesn’t give a damn if a player has to do a somersault in order to get to the quarterback. Then do a friggin’ flip and put the quarterback on his backside!
As far as sitting out a season, which Tryon did last year, Foote has no concerns. Foote believed the PAC-12 shafted players last year and left guys like Tryon in “limbo” about whether to commit to playing football or start preparing for the draft.
Foote said if people study Tryon’s film and see his athleticism and his football passion, they won’t “think twice” about Tryon sitting out last season.

Hearing Foote’s assessment of Tryon makes me feel good. He obviously is a great coach for rushing the passer as he has coached up everyone in his unit since coming to the Bucs.

And JPP sits every Friday practice. Tryon will get good practice time with the first string. What a group of LBs to learn from.

Sometimes when I read about the Bucs these days, I have to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming! It’s so exciting to see this team with the great mix of seasoned veterans, up and coming stars, and developing young players…this team is going to be a force for years to come! GO BUCS!

What the latest on Tryon’s surgery? That seems a bit concerning. If he sat out a year, why didn’t he have the surgery at that beginning of that season he was going to miss?

I have two nephews who live in the Seattle area. One has season tickets for the Huskies and both are huge fans of UW. They both thought Tryon was a great pick.
They both thought Vea was a great pick as well. That’s good enough for me!

Going again this o line will make you better. Learn to Beat wirfs off the edge? Regularly enough in practice? Then it’s just you and Khalil Mack and shaq and jpp that can say that.

I believe Wirfs is just waiting to play K Mack and the Bears again. Time for Tristan to body slam Mack, like Mack did to Wirfs in the week 5 game against the Bears. Tristan was still wet behind the ears in week 5, but this boy Wirfs is growing into a straight out mauler. GO BUCS!!!!!

Tryon should be ready for mini camp, so that will be good to see. He has the physical tools and will eventually be a starter. Don’t know how much he will contribute this year, but in year 2, he could be a beast.

There’s SO much to be exited about for this upcoming Season that I don’t know where to even begin to speculate on what’s what .
