Crash Course

Bucs LB Grant Stuard.

So Bucs rookies came into town Thursday (judging by social media accounts) and hit the practice fields on Friday for the first time as professionals.

And Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles showed the rookies little mercy.

Sevent-round pick linebacker Grant Stuard said he (and other rookie defenders) had to learn and memorize some two dozen plays before Friday’s practice.

“I learned a whole lot,” Stuard said. Coaches “taught us, maybe about 20 or 25 plays that we had to learn in a day. So I really challenged myself. I really just tried to go out on the field yesterday and be dominant with my communication and do my assignment.”

Well, that’s one way to flush out the guys who do their homework and those who don’t — who is a quick learner and who isn’t. Dump a boatload of work on them and order the rookies to come back in a day and know those plays backwards and forwards.

That is also a good way of realizing a talented player may need a little help in learning.

For example, Joe heard a few years ago from an NFL suit that the NFL had spent over $1 million to try to find the best way for players to learn a playbook and a gameplan. The results were that everything should be taught on a screen, as the players learned almost everything from grade school through college via a screen of some sort (home PC, laptop, phone).

Old school chalkboards and whiteboards were no longer effective.

I would never draft anyone who had weird hair like that

My sentimental favorite. I hope all the rookies help us in some way.

I haven’t seen any of his ST play at UH, but apparently that was one of his strong spots. Love to have a great tackler with the loss of Ryan Smith. Is Justin Watson still on the roster? WR is obviously the toughest position to make.

  7. SB~LV Says:

Key point if that was part of the first day, different people learn at different speeds and in different ways. It should be no reflection on football IQ or commitment to the game. Figure out which guys need a different approach.

  8. TampaTown Says:

I always pick a training camp underdog and this year it’s definitely Grant Stuard and his fabulous hair

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Justin Watson is in the 4th year of his rookie contract……It will probably be Mickens who has trouble making the team because of Darden. But, it’s possible Watson could get cut for a UDFA.

Can we talk about the hair?

i like this messages….KT has everything a man needs to be a leader/QB, on character side. Lets hope he is going to get the skills need, to be a good player/QB as well. Finger cross. 🤞

u talking for the white dude, or the black dude??? not sure…. 😵

  13. Marine Buc Says:

    Lol… that hair.

I see a “head and shoulders” endorsement heading this young man’s way.

But seriously – I really like how this guy plays. High motor, great tackler, closes space amazingly quickly and accurately places his hands and body on nearly every tackle I saw him make.

A poor man’s Palumalu… (not just because of the hair). Watch the film.

    You wouldn't draft Troy Polamalu???

  15. Buczilla Says:

Really low lows and crazy highs. I’m thinking that right now may be the best time period ever to be a Buc’s fan. Can the season start already please? 😋

The prior pick at the very top, the Whoville-lookin guy

    100% Big Hair. 100% don’t care.

  24. Rod Munch Says:

The NFL paid some company $1m so they could say, hey, kids are used to learning on screens, so you should use screens to teach them. Wow, what a great scam to pull off.

Hey, NFL, pay me $1m and I’ll let you know if the best way to communicate with players is calling them or texting them. Only $1-million dollars – it’s a bargain!

There are 5 WE who are a lock to make the team, and they are Evans, Godwin, Brown, Darden and Johnson. The rest will battle for one spot. Those are Miller, Watson, Franklin, Jonsen, Grayson, Pearson and Simmons. My guess is Miller far and away ahead of everyone for that 6th spot, and a guy like Jonsen and Maybe Franklin will be on the practice squad. Mickens is as good as gone IMO. We won’t keep 7 receivers this season.

  27. Destinjohnny Says:

Kid has his head on right
    He will make the roster

  28. Cainishere Says:

You have to remember, college teaches you how to learn. these fellas know how to learn. I am sure they are pinching themselves being brought in by the Bucs and if not they should be counting their lucky stars. They more than likely will be slipping a Superbowl ring on their fingers like Winfield and Wirfs did in their rookie campaigns. Go Bucs!!!

  29. Hope springs eternal Says:

Hair today, gone tomorrow. Odds are against the lad, even if he got a buzz cut. Top picks usually make the cut. Lower picks have poor odds. Most of them are gone. Some make the practice squad. Its a mean process.

  30. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Look a little deeper into Grant Stuard’s life and background story. The kid is a high character winner. The hair is a kind of a hallmark for him. That’s why it was perfectly OK with JL and BA to bring him on board.

I’m pulling for him to become a contributor to our champion sustaining franchise. He can become relevant.

  31. TOM Says:

First off Miller will definitely make the team. Nough said. Hope Stuard makes the team in some capacity. Probably special teams for now. Maybe LB or Safety down the road.
