QB Gurus Bond On Mond For Bucs

April 14th, 2021

Kellen Mond

Bucco Bruce Arians would like to draft a quarterback soon, so he says. But which one?

Perhaps Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond is on the radar. He certainly played against strong competition, and Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher has developed a QB or two in his day.

Mond’s big arm completed 63 percent of his passes last season with 19 touchdowns and just three interceptions, plus four rushing TDs and decent scramble yardage.

Nobody’s going to call Mond a crappy prospect as a 6-2, 205-pound senior, but what’s his ceiling?

Former NFL QB Brady Quinn, who has coached college prospects at the East-West Shrine Game, has been gushing about Mond for weeks on SiriusXM NFL Radio. And (gasp!) Quinn even suggested this week that Mond would be a sound pick for the Bucs at No. 32 overall.

Tom Brady pal and retired playcaller Charlie Weis was alongside Quinn on the air and seemed lukewarm to the idea of Mond going so early, but Weis said he wouldn’t have a problem with it because the Bucs literally have no needs on their roster and are in perfect position to develop a QB.

“What better place for a quarterback to go right now, to be there with Tommy?” Weis said.

Joe’s all in favor of the QB gurus at One Buc Palace picking their QB of the future in this draft and letting him sit in an amazing incubator. But Mond in the Round 1? The Bucs should be able to work the draft board and get him later if he’s their guy.

  1. Bucfanforever Says:

Benefit of drafting a QB too early to sit is the 5th year option. If Brady plays 2 more, the QB has 3 years to play and see if worth the big contract.

  2. Robert Says:

We need a development QB….but he could be a deep pick or someone off the streets. Either way I could care less about their stat line. The interview, personal character, mind for the game and fire in the belly is what interests me. aka. Brady, Wilson, Brees, Mannin……PM has it all, but I do not see him lasting 5 years doing it all on his own.

Forget about the flash….been there done that. Heck besides TB…Garcia, Brad and Fitz are our 3 best QB’s in the last 25 years. no flash in any of them unless you count Jeff’s hottie.

  3. PSL Bob Says:

Exactly what I’ve been preaching. Trade back to get an extra pick in Round 2 and draft Mond there.

  4. Dew Says:

Picking Mond in the 1st round gives the Bucs a favorable 5th year option if he ends up the starter & playing great.

  5. Oneilbuc Says:

    Kyle Trask if he’s their.

  6. Bird Says:

Mond isnt worth 1st or second round
    Quinn should no better

I watched his some in senior bowl. What did i miss?

  7. Doolnutts Says:

Not only the 5th year option but you can tag him twice to see how he does.

  8. SB~LV Says:

    No thanks… please

  9. Swampbuc Says:

    Mond >> Trask

He destroyed the Gators last year and outplayed Trashk.

  10. Mr. B Says:

Don’t sleep on Ian Book . He might be the best of the lot.

  11. Killian Says:

Hard pass…Bama QB or trade back and grab best available.

  12. 813bucboi Says:

    TRASK > mond

and i dont want trask until the 4th round…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  13. RioDeJaneiroBucsFan Says:

    I don´t buy it.

OLB depth, DT depth and a back up Center are the most glaring needs (how good it is to type this?)

Any Center of this crop in the 1st round would be a reach.

Resigning McClendon made a DT in the 1st round even less probable, what´s good because I really don´t like Christian Barmore or Levi Onwuzurike so early.

The wise move, if possible, is to trade back, get another 2nd rounder and take an OLB with the first pick, a DT (Daviyon Nixon) with the second one and a Center (Humphrey or Meinerz) with the 64th.

If Mond is still available in the 3rd, take him trading up. QB isn´t a real priority this year

  14. Cobraboy Says:

Mond reminds me of a young Jeff Garcia.

  15. Bucanero Says:

QB is a position worth a 1st round but is this guy worth that and what else is available come draft day? We will see. I would prefer another position but in Licht and BA I trust. Go Bucs!

  16. Dewey Selmon Says:

Someone is going to fall to #64. Don’t force the issue. BPA #32 and see what happens in RD2, maybe trade up?

  17. firethecannons Says:

why not just sign aaron rodgers after TB12 leave? need o-line or cornerback depth or even top safety as bpa

  18. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

I would love to see Mond as the QB of the future on this team. I think he’s head and shoulders above Trask.

  19. m0j0 Says:

Not feeling it. Maybe if they trade back.

  20. catcard202 Says:

Mond showed steady yr-to-yr growth as a 4yr starter in SEC @ A&M…But still see him as a late Day 2 pick / #7 QB off the board in this draft… (Taken after Mills & Trask are off the board!)

Jamie Newman is another name no one is giving love, but that dude can play!
He would be an ideal developmental QB that may be available on Day 3/4th Rd, after not playing a down at UGA . (But his Wake tape is pretty good!)

  21. Tye Says:

maybe late 2nd or 3rd round… definitely DO NOT miss out on a 1st round worthy pick!

  22. Tye Says:

What Jombo Fisher QB has ever had any success panning outat the NFL level?

  23. Stanglassman Says:

I think the best comparison in the NFL is Dak Prescott. I’d love to see him last to 64. I wouldn’t like it but could live with him being our first pick. That would mean the coaches and scouts believe his ceiling is that high.

  24. Jonny Says:

Mond has A+ tools and is 2nd most pro ready of all his peers.

  25. Snook Says:

Fisher developed Russell, EJ Manuel, Ponder, and Jameis.

    Pass.

  26. Bucs GM Says:

Fans make the worst GMs. We can put together a team and save money.

  27. Buczilla Says:

    Cool with me.

  28. Capt.Tim Says:

    Ummm, Pass.
Everyone is convinced that running QBs are the future.
    Buuuut,
    They arent winning Superbowls
    Its not College.
If you run against NFL front 7s- you will get hurt.

They say Malhomes is a running QB. Hes not. He had to scramble against the Bucs.
    He looked terrible.
If we are gonna develop a QB- lets develop a kid who reminds us of our 2 Superbowl QBs.
Accuracy should be the first trait we search for
A leader, with a quick release.
Thats the QBs that win SuperBowls.
Brady destroys blitzes. That is a trait you need in the NFL

    Mond >> Trask

He destroyed the Gators last year and outplayed Trashk.

    ……………………….

Trask threw for 72% 4TDs and 0 INTs for a 203 passer rating in that game. He had nothing to do with the 41 points our D allowed 41 points.

Also Mond only threw for 3 TDs so your definition of him “Destroy”ing and “Outplaying” are very confusing to me

  31. Winny Testaverde Says:

You can literally hear Weiss breath on this program…but I do enjoy it. He calls him “Tommy” to appear to remain close to The GOAT. I can almost guarantee that Brady wants no part of a QB drafted in any round…and why would he?

  32. August 1976 Buc Says:

In the 1st rd, Best Available Player – ‘D Line, O-Line, Secondary’ Any of these 3 areas is a sound pick in first round. J Licht and Co is going to hit on a few more again in 2021 draft. GO BUCS!!!!!

  33. Onetrickpony Says:

    Mond ?
    Pass
    No thank you

  34. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

Walter has Mong going in the 3rd RD to the Steelers; Trask in the 2nd RD.

Walter now has the Bucs taking DE Azeez at #32; I like that pick

  35. Hodad Says:

In the first round? That would be as stupid as moving up in the second round for a kicker. The Stanford kid is a better prospect, and should be there at 32 if we were to draft a QB, so this ain’t happening till maybe the 3rd round.
