“‘Liberating’ Is Probably A Very Good Word”

April 1st, 2021

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

Freedom is ringing at One Buc Palace.

The trophy-throwing and parade-partying are over, and gone is the stress of a pending draft that leads fans and Bucs officials to scream, ‘We better draft a ____ and a ____.’

General manager Jason Licht chatted with media on Zoom today and, of course, was peppered by The Sage of Tampa Bay Sports, JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman.

Licht talked about how unique of a situation this year is for him entering a draft without a pressing need on his iconic roster. Licht even joked with Ira that he can draft any position but won’t be drafting a kicker. (My, how the world has changed.)

Ira suggested to Licht that the Bucs’ unique draft situation as defending champs is “liberating.” And Licht later said, “‘Liberating’ is probably a very good word.

It sure is!

On today’s Ira Kaufman Podcast, a certain subject emerged. Could the 2021 Bucs be the best team in the history of football? Especially if Licht nails the draft again?

Would like to see them get a QB in the later rds.

“”Could the 2021 Bucs be the best team in the history of football?””
Certainly one of the best, but that title belongs to the undefeated Miami Dolphins.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Best team in history?…..Please, let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves….

How about we win the opener……that’s what Brady would say…

  4. BradyBucs Says:

The only way this team becomes one of the best in NFL history…

We’d have to upgrade our corners. At least land a major stud to put on one side.

Davis/SMB/Dean are hardly going to be apart of any “best team ever” roster.

I don’t see why more fans see how much of a LIABILITY they really are.

Then our pass rush doesn’t ball out, which happened for several weeks with Shaq & JPP now getting any sacks for several games, our secondary GOT LIT UP.

Our Offense will be just fine. But it’s our Defense that is a major weakness, regardless of well they played in the playoffs.

We manhandled the Chiefs, but in all fairness, they really did have major injury issues on their O-Line which let our front four really get after Mahomes.

We need a young stud DT or Edge rusher that can rotate in and get after QBs.

We need a corner that’s an upgrade over the guys we have — not sure where that comes from unless we move up in the 1st round to draft one or we do a trade. Or we sign a FA or plays out of his mind, like a Sherman, etc.

  5. Bill Says:

BradyBucs, not sure what you are thinking, but there is not a defensive back in football who can completely lock down a good receiver for more than a few seconds, which is why an effective pass rush is so important. I happen to think our young guys are doing pretty well and getting steadily better.

  6. AtlBuc Says:

20-0 baby!!! getting another young corner like Surtain would be great!

  7. Mitch Says:

The only achievement Brady has not earned is a perfect season… He was close once… Maybe bucs shock the world a different way and go perfect while going for two!

P.S. I don’t know anything about the kid, but I just saw him mocked to the bucs. How cool would it be if the bucs drafted Asante Samuel Jr in the second round?

  8. alton d green Says:

whoa Nelly Chris@apple. lets not get too carried away. The 2007 Pats went 18-1. I was in Germany during the Dolphins 72 season. They will always take a back seat to the Pats just like Montana will take against Brady. AND HE’S NOT DONE YET! hahahahahhaha Have a great Fl. day My Cousin works there in Tampa. She sent me 6 Bucs tshirts and 3 hats. I live in Va but i’ve always been a Brady fan all the way back to the #6 QB at Mi.

  9. Winny Testaverde Says:

Not since Simeon Rice uttered the word “dynasty” immediately following Super Bowl 37 followed by Chunky’s infamous “you ain’t seen nothing yet” comment has fate tempted the football gods. I’ll settle for another glorious season with a chance to win it all. False bravado backfires early/often.

  10. Mitch Says:

Winny Testaverde – except Gruden’s ego ruined the bucs back then.

Bucs today have the ultimate sports leader in Brady, and what seems the perfect combination of skill and personality in all the major coaching/personnel/player positions.

Unless father time shows up or there is a rash of injuries these bucs are primed to improve this season.

  11. Winny Testaverde Says:

Excellent point(s), Mitch. I live in Las Vegas and the locals are finding out that his 10 year tenure may not end well. The 8 game winning streak makes many forget the 7-5 feeling. They may well be better…not sure I’m ready to declare greatest of all time. I love this team and their makeup, however.

  12. TampaTown Says:

Everyone please calm the fu¢k down. By everyone I mean Joe. Who would have thought the biggest negative Nellie Bucs fan would be the one who needs the water hose turned on him?

  13. SOEbuc Says:

    Mitch

p up for trading down to early second for Asante Samuel Jr. Start a Jr of pro bowl DB dad club. Need the dads to come get on the coaching staff. Very thin in secondary at the moment. He could come in and immediately battle for a starting outside CB position or provide great depth in the depth draft. Jaelan Phillips sitting under JPP is something I’d like to see.

    ……..

    19 and 0 is better.

  15. Winny Testaverde Says:

17 game season + 3 playoff wins. That 17th game will take some getting used to.

  16. SOEbuc Says:

Surtain jr. will be long gone.

  17. Mitch Says:

@Winny Testaverde – I did not have high expectations for Gruden in Oakland because I do not think he has changed. My appreciation for him was lost the day I learned that he drunkenly screamed in the face of former GM Rich McKay that “it was his expletive team” during the offseason just following the super bowl win.

That is why you cannot blame Mayock for any personnel move made. He is a glorified director of player scouting with a GM title.

    @SOEbuc

I agree that the secondary is thin. Although I think there will be an increased work load from Herb Miller and Javan Hagan to fill those special team roles. They should still bring in one and more likely two corners to compete. Samuel Jr would be a great addition not only because the recent success of Antoine Winfield Jr, but the connection between Brady and Asante’s father.

Lastly, my only hesitation is I believe edge/olb is a higher priority so if Jaelen Phillps or Azeez Ojulari are available you take your shot!

  18. Cobraboy Says:

    @SB: 17 regular season + three playoff games = 20.

19 just gets you to the dance undefeated. Brady did that once (with 18.)

  19. J.Allen Lofton Says:

A positive success driven player by the name of Tom Brady totally turned around a losing – negative thinking Bucs organization into Super Bowl champions. Now the bucs can build on this positive thinking foundation and become perennial winners for many years. Go Bucs.
