High Investment In Developmental QB

April 30th, 2021

Bucs QB Kyle Trask.

There were very good position players on the board when the Bucs drafted the heir to park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, smartphone-phobic, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing, roller-coaster-scared, numbers-rules-peeved, Bucs-Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady in Gators QB Kyle Trask.

But as Joe has said for months, there may not be a better incubator for a young quarterback than the coaches and roster of the Bucs. So now that Trask is on board, Joe goes to Bob McGinn of The Athletic to see his research on what NFL types think of him.

6. Kyle Trask, Florida (6-foot-5, 236, 5.08 40 time, Rounds 2-3): Compared by one scout to Ben Roethlisberger, although he noted that Big Ben (6-foot-5, 241) ran considerably faster (4.86) coming out of Miami (Ohio) in 2004.

“Nobody’s talking about him,” one scout said. “I’d take him over Lance. He’s a big, strong, tough kid. He’ll step up, and he can throw it. He’s got good enough arm strength. Second round.”

A high school backup in Manvel, Texas, he redshirted in 2016 and then didn’t become a starter until 2019. “I see Jared Goff,” said another scout. “He’s strictly a pocket guy. He has a high, three-quarters release. Quick release, tight ball. He can move around the pocket but he doesn’t have quickness. He does have good pocket awareness.”

Finished with a career passer rating of 117.1. “Similar to Jones,” said a third scout. “He’s a game manager. Average arm. He gets in rhythm good, but if he has to reset and throw it’s over with. He’s a backup type. If he ends up starting you’ve got a bad team.” Largest hands (10 1/8) of the top quarterbacks.

Again, this is a great opportunity for Trask to learn and soak things up. He is under no pressure at all.

Guess it is time we can wave goodbye to Bucs quarterback legend Blaine Gabbert?

  1. August 1976 Buc Says:

Rodgers waited behind Farve for 3 years to start. Of Course Brady knows what they are doing. This kid will be in about the best QB INCUBATOR he could get. So hopefully they get at least 2 more years out of Brady before Trask ever starts. GO BUCS!!!!

  2. unbelievable Says:

Could have gotten Mills or Mond or Frank in later rounds who all have same upside with better accuracy.

I get that Trask was in SEC, but this just seems like way too high of a pick for him.

  3. Im not tired anymore we Super Bowl Champs!! Says:

    WTF?

  4. BoricuaBucFan4life Says:

What a waste of a pick. Kyle Trask is a middle rd talent at best..

  5. Durango 95 Says:

Maybe time to wave goodbye to R Griffin?

  6. Adrnagy Says:

Definitely imo mills. But GM of the year I guess knows what’s up

  7. SKBucsFan Says:

Why would they pick Tebow Manziel? I mean Kyle Trask. Could have got Jake Fromm from the Bills for a 7th rounder.

  8. Buc92’ Says:

    Great pick ! GoBucs

  9. Im not tired anymore we Super Bowl Champs!! Says:

I get the Bucs are trying to build for the future but for 20 years that never worked. So why not just build now and I’ll take two more awesome seasons for 20 miserable seasons into my grave. It’s a Bucs life?

  10. Pete I Says:

    Average arm.

    Wasted pick.

    Project QB

    Texans just took Stanford QB

  11. Oneilbuc Says:

I love the pick a guy to learn behind Brady ! Now I hope Brady help the kid . I want to see all that leadership and how much of a team player he is . Yeees Go bucs !!

  12. SB Says:

Love it! You haters don’t even get 69 TDs to 15 Ints?
    Dolts!

  13. Dewey Selmon Says:

We’re the only team that hasn’t drafted a starter yet. everyone else is filling holes. This allows teams to select developmental QB’s in RD 2.

  14. SB Says:

Oneilbucs………….Brady signed off on Trask or he wouldn’t be here.

  15. TampaTown Says:

    Who’s the number 2 QB?

  16. Oneilbuc Says:

Go look at the Alabama game !!

  17. Deff Jeff Says:

Man you people love to be negative. If it was that easy to throw 50 touchdowns in a season in the SEC why doesn’t every QB do it very year.

  18. SB Says:

    ………..

DUDE! we are the Only team that can afford to draft for depth. Think much?

  19. Richard Dickson Says:

And Mond and Mills are both gone now. Take the guy you want when you can.

  20. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

So stupid. Take another RB or OL, DL, CB, LB anything but a weak armed forever backup QB. WTF.

  21. SKBucsFan Says:

He had the best player in the draft and another first round WR catching balls for him. His ability is skewed by the talent that was around him. Frankly a kicker may have been more palatable.

  22. SB Says:

Homersimpson. Stick to watching synchronized swimming because you know Nothing about football

  23. Canabuc Says:

Bucs were smart. Fun on WB. They had to take one there if they wanted one. They felt this one has most overall talent. Smart accurate, big guy. Among top performance in SEC.
Perfect to learn under Arians and Brady

  24. Canabuc Says:

    Run on QB

  25. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

A bit of a Brady clone it seems. Slow as hell. Average arm strength. Makes quick decisions and accurate. I wanted Mond and possibly Mills over him, but in Bud Licht I now trust (never used to).

  26. August 1976 Buc Says:

Brady is going to be pouring into this kid, thats just his nature. We will see what happens, but obviously the Bucs thought Trask had shown enough and had more upside then the other QBs. Like Joe has stated before about the Bucs enviroment for a young QB to be groomed in. These coaches and Brady being “example A” Could a young rookie be in a better place to learn and possibly be great. We will see. GO BUCS!!!!

  27. Michael Says:

Love the pick! Our future QB after Brady! 😀🏈🏴‍☠️

  28. Buc50 Says:

Mills, Mond aboth went right behind Trask. Not sure what people are thinking but the Bucs HAD to pick a QB. These are the same people who said Etienne would be there in the late 2nd or 3rd round.

  29. Oneilbuc Says:

He’s better was better Jones to me this is all I wanted to see . Now next draft we can go all defense or offensive line in 2022. And the funny thing is I don’t look at the quarterback position like most of the new football fans do .I’m tired of passing on good defensive players and offensive line or even runningbacks for a quarterback. That’s why I’m happy about the pick .

  30. SB Says:

    Hate on Haters!

  31. Oneilbuc Says:

    Who’s hating ??

  32. Mike Honcho Says:

I don’t know, maybe I’m stupid, but I don’t get the hate for this pick. Yeah we could’ve grabbed Perkins, Simon, Meinerz. But now there’s a clear plan of succession. He’s going to learn. I love the pick.

  33. Pete Buttkeg Says:

Seeing some of the trash talk about K.Trask from people who would have said the same things about the Tom Brady pick 20 years ago makes me smile. It also makes me happy that BA is our coach and not the wanna be GM know nothing nimrods talking crap about Trask on JBF before he has a chance to prove himself. Have some faith. The Bucs have earned some trust in their decisions.

  34. SB Says:

    Wasn’t talking to you Oneil.

  35. Drunkinybor Says:

Calm down my peeps!! This was a high risk extremely high reward pick. The Bucs earned the right to take whoever they wanted. Personally after watching this staff win us a superbowl. Im m not second guessing them at all. Trask was playing fantastic last year. I think he’s going to get better and better

  36. Oneilbuc Says:

And please don’t talk to me about Jamies anymore or how racist I was acuse of . And let me say the same thing I said about Jamies because I still believe that he’s going to need a running game and a defense to be successful. I hope they build a system around what he does best . No more of the my system or bust .

  37. Aceofaerospace Says:

Haters gonna hate. Especially gator haters.

  38. Oneilbuc Says:

SB my bad bro maybe now people will understand where I have been coming from the hold time . And that’s the future of the team. Sustain success !!!

  39. Joe in Michigan Says:

This reminds me of the Mike Glennon pick (3rd Round, though) several years ago for the Bucs. I hope (yes, hope) it works out better for the Bucs this time around.

  40. ModHairKen Says:

    SKBucsFan, Tebow Manziel!

I literally hurt my gall bladder laughing. I have cut and pasted that and texted it to all my Boys.

Seriously may be the greatest name ever given to a rookie QB.

God bless you. I needed that.

  41. Abcdgreg Says:

We can see how he progresses this year and then pick up a better prospect next year. Just hoping the Licht draft magic hasn’t already faded.

  42. Elita Vita Says:

Hopefully Brady assisted in this selection. Perhaps he sees some things he feels are correctable in Trask. Could improve….anyways Brady should be around this year and the next. Who knows maybe Aaron Rodgers is in Bucs future!

  43. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    So…..we have a QB controversy…….

  44. Alanbucsfan Says:

A pick 6 vs LSU and a pick 6 vs Oklahoma- 2 biggest games, 5 interceptions-that’s what bothers me about Trask.

  45. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

What a bunch of whiners you people are.

“What a waste of a pick. Kyle Trask is a middle rd talent at best.”

    Scout report:
“I gave him a mid to late round grade..”

That was what a n nfl scout said about Tom Brady.T

I think the Bucs saw a guy very much like Brady. He is certainly NOT like Big Ben was coming out of college…Ben was a scrambler. That guy saw a good build and his first thought was Ben.

But Trask is nothing like Ben in any other way. He’s a pure pocket passer. He has good mobility within the pocket. He’s very accurate. Some scouts claimed he lacked arm strength.

Brady was a toothpick coming out ofcollege…but on every other point they match up.

  46. Swampbuc Says:

Joe reminded me – Goobert is no longer a Buccaneer. Excellent. Griff can manage the game if Brady gets hurt and Trask can , um, Er…… learn.

  47. Real Oh Kneel Dog Says:

Trask make hold team bitter. No wholding him back. I now he can do it know.

  48. kaimaru Says:

For everyone trashing him about his arm. Per the Draft Network:

Trask’s lower half may need to be reconstructed as it is the root of why most of his passes die in the deeper portions of the field.

So it’s his base and mechanics from the waste down is why he loses power and velocity. That can be fixed and with Brady, BL, and Clyde Christensen will help him fix that.

  49. Cobraboy Says:

@Oneill: “Build around what he does best?”

Little dude, no team builds around turnovers.

  50. gp Says:

2nd round pick, low cost, two years to learn behind the goat….
Here’s your chance son, let’s see what you can do with it!

I wonder what Pat’s fans were thinking about the Brady pick oh so many years ago?
    Prolly didn’t even notice

  51. BradyBucs Says:

    ONEIL,

Glad you like the pick! Now you may finally get the chance to see the Bucs develop a young QB for our future. Let’s hope so.

  52. Jerry Says:

He’s not going to be the starter for 1-2 years. He’s got plenty of time to learn and the Bucs have plenty of time to coach him up.

We needed a QB. Look at the roster. What other QB were you going to get? If we have a good year (which is likely) we will be drafting late again next year. And the QBs next year aren’t any better than this class.

  53. Im not tired anymore we Super Bowl Champs!! Says:

Tell Antoine Winfield a second round player won’t make an impact….

  54. Marine Buc Says:

It was basically a third round pick… Relax people. QB is the most important position and we only had 2 on our roster.

  55. Bucs Guy Says:

Wasted 2nd round pick. Poor value. Career backup at best.

  56. Kentucky Buc Says:

@Buccaneer Bonzai. Using the biggest outlier (Brady) in NFL history as comparison is ludicrous. With that said I hope Trask does well .

  57. Oneilbuc Says:

Cobraboy. You have to set your system on what the quarterback does best . Just like what BA did for Brady he got rid of the no risk it no biscuit and use the plays Brady was good at . So even with him he shouldn’t have to throw 45 times a game . Use the running game to take some of the pressure off . A short passing to long passing game and he will be ok . And if they do that for him and he suck then go to the next guy and I will be all for it.

  58. Kentucky Buc Says:

Yeah bub. You’ve written the same sh;t over and over on 100 threads.

  59. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Hilarious people think Mond is an NFL quarterback. Jimbo Fisher hanger-onners I guess.

  60. firethecannons Says:

    hoping Gabbert is gone

  61. Swampbuc Says:

On a related note – Jimmie Giles looked and sounded awesome announcing the pick. Man I LOVE Jimmie Giles. Hopefully O.J. Howard has him on speed dial 24-7.

  62. Swampbuc Says:

On another related note – who’s the hag with the terrible spray tan and no personality announcing all the picks now?

  63. catcard202 Says:

Trask fits the Arian’s vertical passing game QB prototype – Big 6’5″ 240lbs Pocket Passer… You Carson Palmer / Big Ben / Peyton Manning / Andrew Luck body type…Big Guys that would hang in there to deliver a strike down field.

How this pick is perceived in 2-3yrs, will all come down to what Trask does with this opportunity to be developed behind/mentored by TB12, over the next 1-2yrs.

Regardless, he’s a cost controlled BU QB for the foreseeable future (1-2yrs) w/ more potential to be a starter in the league than Ryan Griffin…I’ll take it & not gripe too much.

  64. Rayjay1122 Says:

    I agree with Marinebuc.

  65. JGhotier Says:

Surprised nobody has brought up that he doesn’t have the laces while throwing the ball in this picture 🤷‍♂️

  66. windbaggery Says:

    Un-athletic. Average arm. UF.

What is special about this guy?

  67. Nate Says:

You negative FSU and Miami fans and I’m not a FL fan either but use common sense…IF WE RESIGNED all our backups you DRAFT FOR BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE ….NOT NEED and a QB who touches the ball 🏈 ALL the time has the MOST VALUE BESIDES A WR

And we don’t have one at that pick besides a specialty guy returning kicks..3rd and fourth round can go for DEPTH

especially if they don’t have a OL DE ,RB rated higher than a 59 TD 15 pic QB who beat the national champs LSU BTW

DROP THE MIC🎤 on y’all clowns we won a super bowl as a team not just Brady coaching and all scouts #1 just wait and see

  68. Nate Says:

I’m a USF’ER BTW let another USF allum teach TRYON like BRADY will teach TRASK …..

  69. lambchop Says:

    @SKBucsFan,

Who do you think Trask will be throwing to on the Bucs? Chopped liver? I don’t know if it’s a good or bad pick, time will tell. But, give the kid a chance. He’s in the best situation any day 2 QB could have asked for.

I’m pretty sure he’s an upgrade from Ryan Griffin and Blaine Gabbert. Blaine actually looked good in clean up spots last year, so there’s hope that the Bucs saw something that they can work with. The Bucs have enough talent around him for Trask to develop as an eventual starter.

This is the 1 year of the draft, the Bucs could take a chance on a pick.

  70. Youngbucs Says:

    Doesn’t

  71. Youngbucs Says:

This guy says don’t talk to him about jameis. But in the first thread about the pick At QB he’s the only person who mentions him. All your comments revolve around winston you don’t have to say his name. We know your beef here!!!! Hey instead of talking silly talking bout you need to see something from Brady. Why don’t you tell us what you need to see from Winston. We are curious on your thoughts still no standards??? No expectations????? That’s only reserved for the Bucs the team you hate!

  72. Infomeplease Says:

All I can say is..if the QB Whisperer thinks he’s worth a 2nd round pick then he must be! GO BUCS!!

  73. doolnutts Says:

    Dewey Selmon Says:

We’re the only team that hasn’t drafted a starter yet. everyone else is filling holes. This allows teams to select developmental QB’s in RD 2.

    ——————-

We are also the only team that won the super bowl.. Maybe sit back and relax… Trust the GM and Coach I think they earned it.

  74. Brian Whitney Says:

I look at it this way… what if Brady gets hurt and retired, then we go 9-7 or something. We’d be sitting here next Draft with a late 1st and empty handed at QB. At least Trask is a potential starter drafted where he was supposed to be or later actually. Not a reach! Ask Carolina, Denver, ect how the QB market is. Instead of leaving it to fate who Brady’s successor will be, now we have a head start, sneak peak at a good prospect. Would you rather have been trying to trade for Darnold/Bridgewater types next offseason or give up big picks for expensive average veterans? I don’t like that plan.
