Creamsicles And Pewter

April 1st, 2021

Bucs hoping (someday) to wear the creamsicles for a throwback day.

Fans want it. Players (including Tom Brady) want it.

And Bucs fans, so too does Team Glazer want it. But the NFL doesn’t. At least not now.

Until the NFL loosens a rule, the creamsicle uniforms will remain in our closets, our memories and in fuzzy NFL Films videos on YouTube and Twitter.

Nothing, it seems, gets football fans revved up than talking uniforms. And Bucs fans have clamored for a Throwback Day and to breakout those beautiful creamsicles for years.

The NFL passed a 2013 rule stating players could only use one helmet per season. The NFL cited data suggesting changing helmets may lead to more concussions. The Bucs, rightly, think it is wrong to wear a pewter helmet with the creamsicles rather than the traditional Bucco Bruce white helmets, so the Bucs have yet to wear the creamsicles since the rule change.

In 2019, Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians thought the NFL was going to change the rule to allow teams to wear different helmets. That hasn’t happened.

Still, as he noted yesterday in a rare press conference (via Zoom), Buccaneers co-chairman Joel Glazer said he keeps lobbying the NFL to relax the rule.

“We are constantly at the league’s doorstep to get them to move so that we can wear our throwbacks,” Glazer said. “We are not there yet, but there are discussions going on. Hopefully, at some point in the future that will happen because we know how popular they are with our fans.”

That wasn’t all the uniform talk. Glazer is giddy about how positive the reaction has been to last year’s uniform change to a more classic NFL look, along with an all-pewter alternative uniform that the team unveiled.

“It was unbelievably well-received,” Glazer said. “It was great to see a little more traditional look than we have had in the past. Our players liked it. Our fans liked it. It all worked out. It all went together well.”

How could Glazer not be happy? In the first year of those uniforms, which are very similar to the classic pewter-and-red of the Bucs’ glory days, the team won a Super Bowl.

it’ll be a thing of beauty to see tom tossing tds in the creamsicles…

this is the year to do it…

on primetime – a night game will be fire!

  2. '79 Defense Says:

I’ll never, ever understand how the previous uniforms were approved of after Nike created that crap.

I know it wouldn’t be the same, but they could still do some kind of throwback day at the stadium for a game. Deck it out in orange and get “Hey, Hey, Tampa Bay” playing.

Or even mix the old with the new. Orange uniforms and current helmets. Yeah, it doesn’t go together, but do what you need to do to break out the old jerseys and orange pants!

  3. All lives matter Says:

Bring on the creamsicles. Got my Ricky Reynolds ready to represent our colors and vibe with Brady and Co.

  4. Bucsd04 Says:

I don’t understand why they haven’t thought to just wrap the helmets with white vinyl like they do car wraps?

  5. Darin Says:

If you do it every game Joel they wont stop ya! Have a pewter throwback game once they relax the rule. Do it. Do it. Bring back the cream

  6. Leighroy Says:

In ‘97 the Bucs changed uniforms to this scheme and became winners for the first time in years. Last year they changed them back and won the Super Bowl.

Love the unis! To quote the great Michael Scott, “I’m not superstitious but I’m a little ‘stitious.”

  7. BucEmUp Says:

So freaking stupid! People and their rules and the amount of time required to make a simple decision or change.

  8. Bruce Blahak Says:

This is so frustrating. Every other team can wear their throwbacks. To those who say “their ugly, they’re loser uniforms”. Bullspit. For some diehards like myself, those early Bucs are part of our childhood memories. They lost the first 26 but the drive to the super bowl in 1979 as a 4 year franchise was magic! Far from losers. A turnaround like never before…

  9. Beeej Says:

Argh, does that mean Bruce on the helmet???

  10. Richard Dickson Says:

I always said they should put the flag logo on a white helmet and go back to the orange and white full time. Best of both worlds.

  11. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

The ugliest and softest looking uniforms ever IMO, second worst is the alarm clock uni’s. Look, i became a Bucs fan when they wore those in the late 80’s, loved the team, hated the uniforms. When we changed them in the Dungy Era i was so dang exited and proud. But that’s just me.

    Please no.

  12. WillieG Says:

So we have the ability wrap a car, or even a bus, with ads, without damaging the car, but we can’t wrap a helmet without damaging it?

  13. SlyPirate Says:

A pic of Schiano and Freeman shaking hands?

    That’s a pic of 1000 words.

Caption should read, “Let’s agree to end each other’s NFL career. Deal.”

  14. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

@ ALM – Ricky Reynolds throwback..? Nice!! When I travel to RayJay from VA I rock my Steve Spurrier throwback!

  15. Billy Bob Bubba Says:

Not sure what Joe is smoking. There is no way in he!! I never want to see those uniforms ever again. I cringe when i see any orange uniforms. Orange uniforms is symbolic of losing

  16. DoooshLaRue Says:

    WillieG and Bucsd04,

I’ve mentioned the wrap idea before. Seems so simple and only has to last 3 hours.
Someone needs to figure this out!

The Creamsicles are awesome, just don’t ever go back to the orange pants….. those were terrible.

  17. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Billy Bob,

I’d argue the alarm clock Winston unis are the worst and signify more losing.
At least with the Creamsicles we made it to the NFC championship game in 1979.

  18. buc fan for life Says:

Why can’t they just ‘wrap’ the existing helmets then remove the wrap after the game?

  19. D-Rome Says:

Billy Bob, I’m with you in your opinion. I’ve been to a large bunch of great sports cities over my life and it seems no fan base covets their old uniforms more than Bucs fan. The obsession with the creamsicle uniforms is bizarre. It represents an era associated with being a loser and the worst professional franchise in sports.

If you’re going to have a throwback then throwback to the uniforms where the Bucs won their first Super Bowl. The Buccaneers are a franchise that needs to disassociate themselves from losing as much as possible. They just won the Super Bowl and one of the biggest topics of conversation this off season is about the creamsicles. It’s not only on this site. It’s all over.

  20. Sesteprenelicus Says:

I actually feel the pewter with those orange tops and white pants would look pretty good. At least as a compromise.

  21. BucsMinisiterFuller Says:

I say they play preseason games in the Creamsicles.

  22. Owlykat2 Says:

Love the cream cycle uniforms. We surprised and beat Philly in a big upset wearing that very uniform. I was at the ole sombrero watching that game too and will never forget it ever.

  23. Bruce Blahak Says:

Paranoia over orange uniforms signifying losing? Ridiculous.
Like I said, fans should be proud of the youngest team to make a championship game(at that time). And the lot they had to pick from in expansion was basically nothing. Most of the team was very, very young..and if Williams and Lee Roy play the 2nd half in the championship game in 79, they could have been Super Bowl bound.
    Losers?
Bennett, Testaverde eras were losers, not the team I started cheering for.
Playoffs 3 of 4 years before Culverhouse booted Doug.

  24. DingleBerry Says:

Couldn’t they just use stickers on the helmets and then swap out the face mask?

  25. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

That’s a great picture of Coach Schiano. I had high hopes for him and the Bucs, when he came to Tampa.

  26. David Says:

The uniform changes last year were fantastic. Of course now they won a Super Bowl with them so they better not change for a long time.
But yes, they absolutely need to have a throwback day with the Creamsicle ‘s.
The helmet rule is such crap. Just get some new helmets with
Bucco Bruce (Arians?) on it. It’s not like they’re going to wear 1970s technology.

I figure they have two years to get it done because everyone needs to see Tom Brady wearing the Creamsicle‘s

  27. DBS Says:

Hope to never see those uniforms or the Burger King uniforms again. I don’t understand why anyone wants to be reminded this was one of the most laughed at and worst teams in the NFL.

  28. SKBucsFan Says:

Just change out Orange for the Red (and vice-versa) and you have the new design incorporating a tribute to the beginning. It’s not the old Creamsicles, but it would be a sharp compromise. In fact a few people more resourceful than me have posted the design out there.

  29. HeyItsAdam Says:

“ The NFL cited data suggesting changing helmets may lead to more concussions.”

NFL “data” also says that there’s no connection between concussions and CTE.

  30. Swampbuc Says:

The only game the Bucs have won in those creamsicles this century was the first time against the Pack in 2009 and that was with Josh Failman. I prefer not to have the scab on all those horrible years pealed back. Burn the creamsicles in the furnace and make them gone forever.

  31. TampaTown Says:

All my childhood Buc memories are in the creamsicle uniforms! Yes it was mostly losing but that’s what makes it so nostalgic. The NFL has to allow Tom Brady to wear that uniform. Goodness I would swoon seeing that.

  32. DoooshLaRue Says:

    TampaTown,

    Exactly.
I remember how excited I would get as a kid when walking out from inside the old Sombrero and seeing those bright orange jerseys!
It’s burned into my memory and I miss seeing them.

  33. Cobraboy Says:

(CB pulls a 90’s PC saying and tosses it out:)

    “Wrap that Rascal!”

  34. Cobraboy Says:

The creamsicle uni’s were not ugly.

    The losing was.

    Unfortunately, the two became equivalent…

  35. Mark Says:

I’ve never understood that rule. The NFL can’t afford to make safe white helmets? Please help me understand this.

  36. Wesley Says:

Only the NFL could make this complicated.

  37. SOEbuc Says:

Shaqs Doug Williams jersey the most bad ass jersey I’ve ever seen.

  38. lambchop Says:

Ugly color, but for a throwback game, HELL YES!

I think it’s a lot easier to accept these unis AFTER winning 2 Lombardis.

  39. lambchop Says:

I would LOVE to see us destroy a team in the creamsicle unis.

This is the last bit left to get closure on the REPUS BOWL days of yore.

    Put Tom in the creamsicle!

  40. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Lamar Sparkman the cartoonist of the Tampa Tribune created Bucco Bruce. Bruce was modeled after Errol Flynn and looked like him too. Lamar also created wonderful cartoons of the Buc Bomber , an old biplane with McKay at the controls and quipping madly as he was prone to do.

  41. I'm a TandymanBucsFan Again Says:

Just asking??? Why can’t they keep their same Helmets and pay some MacDaddy Air Brush Artist come in and paint The Pewter Old School!!!! Same Helmet different look!!!! Long Live Creamsicle

  42. All lives matter Says:

I don’t see why they can’t have two helmets made exactly the same way ( safety enhanced) except for the color and logos they would be identical. I’m sure the Glazers could afford that if they truly wanted to do throwbacks.
