Bucs Scored An Edge Rusher, So What’s Next?

April 30th, 2021

“We’ll get you something, Tommy.”

Joe has a feeling the Bucs will be coughing up their third- and fourth-round picks on Friday night.

Yes, the Bucs sat tight and patient and held on to the No. 32 overall pick to grab edge rusher/OLB manbeast Joe Tryon out of the University of Washington.

Joe loves the pick — loves, loves, loves adding pass rush talent.

However, Joe is impressed that the Bucs didn’t trade up and still got their guy, or at least one of them. That left Tampa Bay with the luxury of ammunition to be aggressive in Round 2 later tonight.

There has to be guys the Bucs are salivating over on the board that simply won’t be there at No. 64 overall. So Joe is thinking now is the time for general manager Jason Licht to force the issue. After all, there’s no way the Bucs could have a full load of 2021 draft picks make their loaded roster.

Perhaps they have their eye on center/guard Landon Dickerson out of Alabama, or versatile safety Jevon Holland out of Oregon.

What would it take to move up 15 or 18 spots? A third- and a fourth-rounder with the Bucs’ second-rounder should be enough.

since we missed on DE in the 1st round – might want to try again

  2. Medicated Pete Says:

Asante Samuel Jr, Trevon Moehrig, Nick Bolton, Azeez Ojulari, Jeremiah Owusu-Korahkoah

If Bucs trade-up & get 1 of those guys. It was a successful draft

  3. geno711 Says:

I like the cornerback talent that still might be available at the end of the 2nd round. I also like an interior DL at the end of the 3rd.

    But BPA makes sense.

  4. SOEbuc Says:

    Center

  5. Leighroy Says:

Somebody tall enough to guard Kyle Pitts for the next decade could be nice? Unless SMB is that guy? It ain’t either of our current starting safeties, no offense at all but they’re 9 inches shorter!

  6. MadMax Says:

    Joe, Thank You 🙂

Yes, Landon all the way. He’s probably going 35-40. I dont want to give up too much draft capital but man we sure could use him!

  7. Tampabuscsbro Says:

This Aaron guy thinks we missed on it. I mean this draft is one of the biggest crap shoots in recent memory but he is convinced we missed.

  8. adam from ny Says:

what the heck is his long last name…???

his name is not tryon…it’s way longer with a hyphen

  9. adam from ny Says:

ok guys – all this talk and no one has an answer yet you know everything about the team…!!

i think his name and what you will see on his jersey is:

    TRYON-SHOYINKA

  10. Capt.Tim Says:

    Center.
Thats the next position we need to draft
    Then Defensive tackle, then safety.

Then, just a bunch of unhappy guys, with no chance to break onto this very talented roster.

  11. adam from ny Says:

    HIS NAME IS:

    JOE TRYON-SHOYINKA

    i think

  12. Colin in Canada Says:

    DB / OL

  13. JGhotier Says:

LOOKS LIKE BRENDAN DONOHUE WAS RIGHT AGAIN!

    Will he wear #9 w/ us?! It’s not taken…..

  14. Bucsfan951 Says:

I thought the Bucs were picking barmore at 32 since suh is older. What ever. Trenches is always good!

  15. Mike Says:

I smh when I read these back seat analyst, without a dog in the hunt, describe their opinions on what would make the Bucs Draft Picks successful.. The Super Bowl Winning Bucs… Please stop opining and do whatever it is you do and be a good fan!! You all have no clue with the info that these exes have and the plans that they have to separate each players in their schemes.

  16. Aaron Says:

As a Bucs fan – I hope we got it right 🙂

  17. BradyBucs Says:

    We need a RETURN MAN.

If we’re so ‘set’ in our starting positions, then why not draft an effective returner?

We haven’t had one in AGES.

  18. Aaron Says:

beware Bradybucs – if you dont kiss the ring…

  19. Swampbuc Says:

Aaron — really man, WTF? STFU.

  20. August 1976 Buc Says:

Remember when many were hot for Derwin James and the Bucs took Vita. Yeah we all do, and we see how that went. Thankfully they took Vita, he is definitely a better pick than Derwin. To speak honestly about a draft, you need several years. But I believe J Licht will get a couple more studs in this draft. BTW, the only ring kissing is by the other 31 teams kissing the Bucs players rings next season. And Mahomes you are the first in line, and Rodgers step right here your 2nd. GO BUCS!!!!!!

  21. Brit Buc Says:

Quinn Meinerz or Levi Onwuzurike and I’m happy. Does anybody else get the smell of a QB Mills/Mond in Round 2?

  22. Bucs Guy Says:

Quinn Meinerz or Jenkins from OK State. Stay away from Landon (Ala C). Too many injuries for my liking. I would also be OK with a CB.

As for Tryon, not my first choice for an Edge, but it’s a good pick. I trust AB and JL.

  23. adam from ny Says:

it would be nice if we can hang onto a 2nd and 3rd round selection — and basically throw all the other draft picks — rounds 4 thru 7 (x2) into trades to move up in both the 2nd and 3rd…by adding in all the later round fodder picks, to bump up some spots…

    get a choice guy in the 2nd and 3rd and we’re good…

trade the 2nd rounder with say the 4th and 7th to move up a bit…then trade the 3rd rounder with the 5th and 7th to move up a bit…

keep the 6th or toss it in if someone is hard balling and you’re eyeballing a specimen of a player

  24. ClodHopper Says:

I like your thought process, Joe.

  25. adam from ny Says:

if we walk away with 3 solid players and even draft a 6th rounder, i think we’re good…

joe’s right, the roster is just so deep and loaded – bringing 3-4 guys into camp is just fine this year…

and every undrafted free agent and their mother is gonna wanna come play for the bucs anyway…

as well as all free agents left blowing in the wind…they’ll sign for minimum with a chance to stick and grab a ring…

we are totally ok drafting 3-4 guys for camp…round 1 thru 3 should stick…6th rounder, who knows

  26. K2 Says:

I don’t agree! There are good players in the 3rd and 4th rounds. The Draft hit rate is about 50%. I could see the Bucs using a 4th to move up if a dream guys is available. But 3rd and 4th round guys can build a team and upgrade depth. I don’t think Jason was making stuff up when he said last night to answer a similar question. Basically Jason, rejected the idea…saying they have guys they like in several rounds.

  27. Hope springs eternal Says:

Badass line man fills the second big need for big fast linemen rounds one and two. O and D get the teams biggest needs for backups with great potential. Not needing immediate starters the Bucs will have fresh blood for backup duty and perhaps mid-season starters if a first team guy goes down. Next on list, potential stud to rest Suh and a run stuffing pass defending line backer. Lastly, kick/ punt returner or corner back.

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Trade with later round picks….and use UDFAs to fill in the roster…..we should have our pick this year….

  29. Hodad Says:

Not sure why some want a center so bad. Jensen has a big salary, but earned every penny last year. We can always redo his deal like so many others also. Don’t think Tom wants to break in a new center in 2022 when it might be his last year. It’d be good depth, but I’d rather get a player who’ll have more impact next year then one who will replace a cap casualty the following year.

  30. 6throundpick Says:

Point. Why bring too many players in- just to spend teh picks -when there are no roster spots. My, how things have changed in Tompa Bay…

  31. #1bucsfan Says:

Go get Asante Samuel jr. we all saw how well Winfield played last year as a rookie. I believe that will be the same with Samuel. Do it Jason. I’m not sold on SMB and dean. They need competition and depth would also help. You cannot have to many pass rushers or DBs in this passing league

  32. 813bucboi Says:

i say draft Quinn Meinerz-c/g, Trey Smith-g/t or a DB….Dylan Moses would be good too…

someone mentioned kyle pitts…i threw my beer when the dirty birds picked him….lol…and honestly no one can guard him…the best way to limit pitts is to get after the QB…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  33. Tim Says:

Why don’t we move up and get Kyle Trask? He would be the perfect person to learn behind Brady and take take the reigns when he retires.

  34. NOLES Says:

    August—

Vea is doing great but so is Derwin James who was also injured last yr. I believe they are both very talented. Happy we got Vea as DT was a big need and we ended up addressing S w Winfield. Not like we would have been upset w James as our pick he did make pro bowl as rookie I believe.

  35. NOLES Says:

would like Landon or Asante in rd 2 if possible
