Bucs Connection To Bill Belichick Philosophy
April 19th, 2021Joe went down the rabbit hole of YouTube last night and discovered a football gem.
Daniel Jeremiah, as we all know, is now NFL Network’s lead draft analyst. He’s good at what he does. A former NFL scout and college quarterback, Jeremiah really comes at player evaluations just like a scout. And the guys who make a living at player evaluations respect him a bunch.
Anyway, he came across a document from an old scout, since passed away, who took copious notes of a scout meeting when he worked for the Browns. The coach’s name you may have heard of: Bill Belichick.
Belichick explained some of his football truisms. One is, per Jeremiah, a good defense has to be strong up the middle and must defend the run.
“The defense needs to defend the middle of the field first, not allow an offense to pass or run inside,” Jeremiah read directly from the scout’s notes of Belichick’s orientation. “Pressure on the QB up the middle. Force them to go outside.”
Jeremiah later read from the same notes, sharing Belichick also said if a guy can’t tackle, you cannot put him on the field, and a defense must stop the run before it stops the pass.
Why does Joe bring this up? Well, we all know Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht worked for several years for the Patriots. Clearly, Belichick was a guiding light for Licht.
And last year the Bucs had such a good defense, you can tell it was built, at least indirectly, with Belichick in mind. Look at the middle:
On the line you have Vita Vea and Ndamukong Suh. On the second level you have Lavonte David and Devin White. On the third level you have Antoine Winfield and Jordan Whitehead.
All of those guys can tackle. All of those guys are well-rounded if not ferocious. And they can pressure the quarterback from up the middle.
Though Belichick is 1,300 miles away up in Foxboro, you can see his teachings all over the Bucs defense.

That’s not unique to Belichick that’s just good coaching philosophy he didn’t come up with that, love how people make him out to be this wizard of a coach when he’s nothing without Brady

Brady has indicated a few times his worst nightmare is the pass rush getting thru the center

A strong middle has always been a key to success on defense. Look at the middle of the first Bucs SB team.
The pressure up the middle is also important because if you force the QB to one side, you take almost half the field away from him. You narrow the field. It’s a simple concept that escapes many.
)A personal anecdote: back in The Day of my grad asst. coaching, I convinced the HC to kick-off from the hashmark (wider in college) and have the kicker place the ball not in the end zone, but as near to the pylon as possible. That took away over half the field for a return. That team led the NCAA in the fewest yards per return by a large margin. I also convinced the HC to have the punter place the ball as near to the sideline as possible for the same reason, but the punter lacked significant placement skills.)

When our defense started becoming number 1 against the run, I knew at that point this team had a chance to be good. You stop the run and be good against the pass 50% of the time… Well that is a clear recipe for success in this league.

Need to draft a big DL as the is most likely Suh last year with the Bucs.
Christian Barmore in the Ist or Jay Tufele in the 2nd or Marvin Wilson in the 3rd.

Our Defense is much like the Ravens Super Bowl winning defense, and Licht even said as much.
A poster posted this “That’s not unique to Belichick that’s just good coaching philosophy he didn’t come up with that, love how people make him out to be this wizard of a coach when he’s nothing without Brady” and I totally agree!
The loss of Brady has revealed Belichick to be a mere mortal.

It doesn’t matter what the sport, being strong up the middle on defense is essential for a winner. Even in golf Jack Nicholas’s strategy was to hit to the middle of the green and putt to the perimeter.

Last year was a throw away for bill. they needed to get the books in order. That’s partly why brady left. He wasn’t willing to waste a year. You’ll see a more accurate representation of his skills this year. Remember, he molded brady. The first 3 superbowls, brady was much more of a game manager.

I’m stunned – not one reference by Joe of Bill “Belicheat”? What happened?

Brady and Belidouche are both great in their own respects but PLEAAASE do not give Belidouche any credit for the Bucs success… It was all Brady turning the key and reviving a suped up engine while shifting it across the finish line 🏆

“TB was much more of a game manager” to win but was above head and shoulders to other QBs. I believe TB gave at least 2 extra wins each year. That certainly enhances the probability to win the SB. Without TB, BB might be a version of Carson.

TB wanted a 2 year contact and Belichick only offered a 1 year deal. Yet BB made sure his sons ( Brian, Steve ) have coaching jobs on the team. BB said last season’s record was due to lack of money. How lame. Clear to me Belichick was piggybacking on Brady’s back all those years.
