The Buccaneers’ “Voice Of Reason”

March 27th, 2021

Was there really any question that the Bucs would bring back linebacker and captain Lavonte David for his 10th Tampa Bay season?

Joe doesn’t think so after hearing recent chatter from defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

Bowles was a guest of longtime NFL insider Josina Anderson on her pay-per-view online show Undefined.

Anderson asked Bowles to put David’s value into words and he gave a great answer.

“He’s the voice of reason over there on defense, Bowles said. “He gets everybody going. He makes sure everybody comes out ready to play and well prepared. He brings a lot to table. You know, he was a great player before I got here. He continues that now the way he prepares. The way he helps Devin [White] become a professional, as far as preparation is concerned is great. And he’s great for the young guys on defense, and he’s great for the old guys. You know, he’s been very consistent over the time he’s been the league of being the same player and he prides himself on that. I have a lot of respect for him.”

It’s no surprise that Bowles is glowing about David, but Joe found the “voice of reason” line interesting, especially when viewing David as a complement to fiery and cocky Devin White.

Also, Bowles’ comments about David grooming White mirror things that Derrick Brooks has said, along with general manager Jason Licht. And it’s interesting that David takes great pride in consistency; some guys are much more wired to “make plays” versus their respect for every snap.

It’s going to be very special when David eventually gets his Ring of Honor day. Hopefully another Super Bowl ring comes first.

Lavonte took his pass coverage skills to another level vs Kelce in the Superbowl.

  2. Mitch Says:

LVD has been my favorite buc for the better part of a decade. I think he is a HOFer. It’s a shame he played on so many terrible teams during the lost decade. I hope the bucs can win another SB too to help his chances of getting the call.

  3. Buczilla Says:

Awesome player and in the conversation for second best linebacker in Buc history.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Over the years, TBBF has seen many, many Buc players maligned, berated, questioned…..but not LVD…..I cannot remember it ever….not even from trolls.

Always underrated, always respected….a great, great Buc.

  5. DaBux Says:

In the end, he will be a Hall of Fame LB. Watch the state line. He’s right up there with some of the greats.

  6. BuucccNASTY Says:

Another Super Bowl should lock up David as a HOFer, no doubt about it. Should be one without any SBs but it’s a Buc Life lol but for real, put his stats side by side to Mr Derrick Brooks (my fav of ALL TIME) and he’s right there, he was just missing the finger hardware.

  7. Dbbuc711 Says:

It struck me that the descriptions of David and White being that voice of reason and fiery & cocky would have also described Brooks and Sapp.

  8. Cobraboy Says:

If anybody deserves a SB ring on the Bucs, it is Lavonte David, usually the only bright spot on a historically dismal defense and team.

We will forgive his faux pas against the Jets a few years back…

    Definitely underated.
Definitely belongs in the Ring of Honor.
Definitely belongs in the Hall of Fame.
Definitely hope he retires a Buc.

  10. David Says:

So happy him and Mike Evans got Super Bowl rings. Two class acts. Two unselfish players. Two players that now might get the recognition on the Hall of Fame careers they are creating

  11. Beeej Says:

Bucs will be on national tv even MORE this year, and unlike last year, they’re gonna kill it. (AND, LVD will get needed press)

  12. Bucsfanman Says:

LVD has been a stalwart. I can’t say I’m in the “he’s a HOFer” category, but I respect his play. Seeing him with much more talent around him has really opened some eyes.
I’m happy he’s getting some recognition.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

I could see Lavonte playing another 4-5 years (he just turned 31 in January). Derrick Brooks played 14 yrs & Hardy Nickerson played 16 years, so surely LVD will at least get 13-14 years, maybe more. And his leadership skills just keep getting better & better it seems.

I think that things are looking up for him ultimately making the HOF. Brooks made it on the first try, and Lavonte’s key regular season stats are more than comparable to Derrick’s. LVD has averaged 125 tackles, 14.2 TFLs, 2.7 sacks, 1.33 INTs, 1.8 FRs & 5.7 PDs per season. Derrick averaged 122 tackles, 4.9 TFLs, 1.0 sacks, 1.8 INTs, 0.3 FRs & 6.0 PDs per season. Those regular season stats look remarkably close to me.

  14. FirstTimePoster Says:

I’m SO glad that Lavonte got to experience being a CHAMPION! Well deserved. My only regret is Demar Dotson never got to experience it. He was a warrior and answered the bell for a lot of years on subpar teams. I wish he got a ring. Thank you Demar.

  15. Dewey Selmon Says:

It broke my heart that i couldn’t wear my red #54. That would have been icing on the cake. had to go white so Hardy #56 was it. #54 could retire tomm and he would be in the ROH.

That’s a great take and right on the money.

  17. Lunchbox Says:

Look at that picture of him up top. He’s got that gold “C” for a reason. Leadership.

Wirfs to the Pro Bowl in 2020, NFL All Rookie team too. Heard it here first.

  19. Colonel Angus Says:

David needs a Defensive MVP award, that and a ring with the stats to boot will get him in. Don’t forget that #55 was Defensive MVP of the 2002 season (was about to say our Super Bowl season, but we now have 2 of them mo’ fuggers!).

  20. REDZONE BA Says:

LVD- Should have been Pro-bowl earlier in career. At least LVD has Ring. Glad he is getting his kudos.

  21. Sport Says:

The only issue I’ve had with David is when he said one bad play early in the season a few years back,, took the wind out of sails for the entire season. I saw that as weak minded. Still do. And I also believe that weakness contributed to our losing culture

Just like GMC was a contributor to the Bucs losing culture. They sat back and allowed a Swagvy Cancer to exist.

His lack of self promotion kept him from being a perrenial probowler.

Overall he is easily one of the greatest Bucs of all time.

    In BA I Trust!

  22. orlbucfan Says:

I have been a LVD fan from the very beginning. If yahoos like Ray Lewis can make the HOF, why not a case act like LVD? I am psyched that he’s back and will finish his career as a Buc.

  23. BUCFAN4LIFE Says:

When LVD finally retires (as a Buc) he’ll become the 2nd Linebacker for thlinebacker in our teams History to be inducted into.the HOF in Canton !

  24. BUCFAN4LIFE Says:

OOPS ! I meant in our Teams History .

  25. BUCFAN4LIFE Says:

    LVD ‘s a Treasure !

  26. Anonymous Says:

His stats are better than a lot of HOF LB’s

  27. Eddie Says:

Bowls knows. David is a guy you want on your team. Keep it going BUCS 👍
