Bucs Add A Sixth-Round Draft Pick

March 10th, 2021

Bucs fans have come to love sixth-round draft picks over the years.

Scotty Miller, Mike James, Keith Tandy, Geno Hayes, Adam Hayward, Ellis Wyms — they were all well-liked Tampa Bay sixth-round picks of the past 20 years.

So Joe hates when people use the term “throwaway pick” referencing late-round selections. They’re only throwaway picks if you’re bad at picking players.

Today, via ProFootballTalk.com, compensatory draft picks were announced and the Bucs scored an extra sixth-round pick in the 2021 draft (No. 217 overall).

The Saints were bolstered by picks Nos. 98, 106 and 218 overall.

The formula for compensatory draft picks is a total mess to explain and, from Joe’s experience, NFL executives even have a hard time clarifying it. In short, if you lose players to free agency, then that is weighed against players you sign in free agency and “compensation” for your losses may be awarded in the form of a draft pick (s).

So we got a pick for losing Jameis?

  2. bucfanforever Says:

Oh, I read the title and thought they extended Brady.

  3. DoooshLaRue Says:

    So who did we lose?

  4. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

    Breshard Perriman

  5. LISTNFRMAFAR Says:

Brady was a 6th round draft pick? Bucs lucky round.

  6. BuucccNASTY Says:

Brady signing last year wiped out most of compensatory pick value from my understanding, and I believe Jamiss Pick6 is correct, Breshad Perriman is where the value still resided and allowed to us actually obtain any Comp Picks.

  7. Bird Says:

Teams that have lost more compensatory free agents than they signed in the previous year receive between one and four picks somewhere in the third through seventh rounds.[68] Teams that gain and lose equal numbers of players but lose higher-valued players can also be awarded a single seventh-round pick

    ^^^^

That is how defined if search

  8. Bird Says:

Hey we can use it to move up in third or fourth round for that last quality stud/contributor/ future starter

We have found low round gems over the years. Every team does
But its rare to get quality guys in rounds 5,6 and 7

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So, it’s next year that we may get picks……Fournette, AB, Shaq,Suh, if they aren’t resigned.

  10. Gbobucsfan Says:

    Who did the saints lose?

  11. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Gbobucsfan,

Not sure who, but maybe the NFL figures since they have JayMiss then they’re gonna need as much help as possible!

  12. SOEbuc Says:

A bit off topic I saw a draft with Edge Ronnie Perkins (Okla) at 32 and I’m loving it. Plays and size like JPP. He could be a perfect student of the game with JPP in his last year.

  13. Adrnagy Says:

    Beau Allen. Carl nassib.perriman?

  14. FactTeller Says:

Does anyone know if signing AB mid-season affected our number of Comp picks?

  15. Mitch Says:

Bucs didn’t get a pick for Jamies because his contract was so low that it didn’t qualify. Bucs received the pick for losing Breshad Perriman.

  16. Rod Munch Says:

The pick was for Perriman, was projected to be a 5th rounder – so it sucks it turns out to only be a 6th.

I like Ronnie Perkins as well feel like he is solid value there if that is what the Buc’s want. I really like that he has played both sides of the defense as well.

To me JPP athletic talent is soo underrated. Look up his back flip challenge in 2009. Not sure that any other athlete his length could do that.

But that being said on JPP, again I like Ronnie Perkins.

Brady was a sixth round draft pick!!!

  19. 6throundpick Says:

…they did (TB12) last year, as well.

  20. Rod Munch Says:

The Bucs got the 1st comp pick in the 6th round, so they lost out on a 5th rounder by one slot…

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We have our full compliment of picks this year….with an additional 7th round pick…..and we will need them for depth & special teams…..

The vet minimum is from $675K-$850k…..so I’m quite sure there will be many qualified vets competing with our later round picks.

  22. Reddington Neck Shores Says:

Haha losing americas backup quarterback nets us a 6th round pick for the loss. The irony is great since we replaced him with a 6th rounder already.

  23. firethecannons Says:

  24. firethecannons Says:

    sorry my bad

  25. Ne+ bucs fan Says:

AB was a 6th round pic

  26. LISTNFRMAFAR Says:

Good one Ne+bucs fan, Brady was obvious but AB was not. Didn’t know he went 6th round.
