White A Key To (Maybe) Stopping Brees

January 14th, 2021

Big-time

Devin White is a relief to have back for the Bucs, in more ways than one.

Yes, White always seems to be around the ball. He finished the regular season with 140 tackles, fifth-most in the NFL. Had he not found himself on the Reserve/COVID list, Joe thinks White would have finished with 150 or more. White also finished the regular season tied for fourth-most tackles for loss (15).

White really transformed into a feared pass rusher on blitzes late in the season after a rough start in that area. This was one of his main selling points from Bucs officials when White was a No. 5 overall pick. This year he had nine sacks, four in his last two games.

With Jason Pierre-Paul and NFL sack king Shaq Barrett nearly AWOL the past month, the Bucs need that inside pressure from White.

In a report on the Bucs-Saints playoff game Sunday night, James Palmer of NFL Network explains just how big White returning to the Bucs lineup is as the team preps for the slimy Saints.

To win this game, the Bucs are going to have to pressure Drew Brees all game long! White and the Safeties are going to have to be constantly blitzing from different angles and positions. Jam the Saint receivers close to the line, force Brees to hold the ball longer than he would like, and get Suh, JPP, Shaq and White in his face. Even then, Brees will still complete his share of passes!

On offense, turn Brady and his weapons loose and try to out score the Saints. This could be a 42-38 type of game, and we need to keep the pressure on the Saints all game long! GO BUCS!

He’s horrible in pass coverage I mean horrible. So what were expecting this man to reach brees over 10 times Sunday 😭😭😭 cause that is what’s going to need to happen

    44-21 SAINTS 💁🏾‍♂️

    Troll alert

    With new poster name
Laughable they are scared to show real poster name
    Ndog ? Webster?

  6. Beeej Says:

Bree’s is a lot like Brady in that he gets rid of the ball so fast

  7. Mitch Says:

aFEDupBUCfan sounds like Ndog. Either way you’re not a Bucs fan. You’re a fan of yourself and your own selfish desire to be proven right. The Bucs are in the divisional round in the playoffs for the first time since 2002 and they have the winningest QB of all time leading the team. 31 playoff victories. The Saints organization has 9 playoff wins in their entire history, and 12 losses that’s one more than Brady has in his postseason career.

This will be a tough games, but my bet is on the Brady and the Bucs.

  8. August 1976 Buc Says:

lol lol as we all know, that is why they still play the games, because no one can honestly say what will happen. Philly went down to the Bucs in the NFC Championship when they had previously owned the Bucs. Protect Brady and the Bucs can beat anyone. The Bucs did beat up Green Bay this year and Green Bay beat up on the Saints before that. BTW Fitz and the Bucs put 48 on the Saints the last time they beat the Saints, so Brady most certainly can. GO BUCS!!!!

Sunday, the Bucs Send Bress into retirement with “L”

    How awesome would that be?!

  10. Chris Boyd Says:

for the record, i saw a quote where white said something like we have to play physical with the wr and te’s, so it kinda sounds like the gameplan isn;t gonna be that crappy soft zone we all hate! i sure hope thats the case!

  11. Chris Boyd Says:

he also said we cant just let them play pitch and catch, which reinforces that idea… sounds promising!

  12. 813bucboi Says:

dont feed the trolls!!!…let them starve….they’ll eat crow later!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  13. Georger Says:

Brees dose not have the arm Brady has. Brees can’t throw deep. We have to play tight coverage and not worry about the deep ball.

  14. Ftmyersbuc Says:

I agree the only time we need help over the top is if taysom or Jameis come in. If we can stop that underneath stuff and force them into throwing deep i think we got them. Also can one of our o linemen get a nasty blindside block on cj gardner, i would love nothing more than to see him knocked out for a few seconds like nate robinson. (nothing permanent just a stfu message)

    YES, my brother!!

  16. Brandon Says:

Joe, you are incorrectly crediting six of White’s nine sacks to blitzes. They were not blitzes. Half of them were when he stopped a QB that was trying to get back to or past the LOS after he left the pocket, and the other three were not designed blitzes but recognizing that the RB has stayed in to block and attacking the pocket and picking up coverage sacks. He had a mere three sacks off actual blitzes.

  17. Defense Rules Says:

Jeagan1999 … Fantastic comment and 42-38 sounds just about right. The only additional thing I’m looking for is that the Bucs don’t turn the ball over. That killed us in BOTH games this year (3 giveaways in each game) and it we do that again it’ll kill us Sunday.

Brandon … Excellent perspective. That’s a level of detail I haven’t found on any site & would love to know where you spotted it.

  18. EvolvingBucsFan Says:

Please don’t abandon the Run, we did the last 2 meetings we lost, keep putting the pressure on brees and wear down their defense with the run and the rest will take care of it’s self if we can run the ball and open up the passing game even more.

    Revenge time, Go Bucs!!!!!

    When opportunity knocks…

    Great post!

Hopefully opportunity will knock often and Brees see’s lotsa blue sky (in a dome?)

I don’t see where Joe says all 9 sacks were on blitzes in this article.

  21. Ge Fit:oi Says:

Maybe the DB’s should play the recievers right on the line ! Why give them 10 yards automatically?

  22. SirClicksAlot Says:

    Dear Haters,

Devin White is an All-Pro, a game changer, and one of the fastest- maybe THE fastest- linebackers in this league. White has a kung-fu death grip on QBs and will take out a RB’s legs faster than Tonya Harding. He is the definition of a difference-maker and having him back for the biggest game of the year matters. You may not be hyped but you can bet your bottom dollar he is.

    Can’t wait for Sunday!

  23. G in MA Says:

Why not put the DB’s on the receiver on the line scrimmage ? Why give them a free 10 yards by playing them so far off the line of scrimmage?

  24. SlyPirate Says:

THIS IS THE CHESS MATCH- WHITE WILL DECIDE THE GAME
After the last Saints game the Bucs figured out …
    a) They needed a better pass rush,
    b) White was the guy

It took him a few games to figure it out but boy did he figure it out. That boy is so fast he can delay blitz and get to the QB in a heartbeat.

Putting White into pass situations means a TE will be covered by a Safety AND the WR will be 1-1. The game will be decided in part by whether White can get to the QB before the QB can hit the safety or open receiver.

  25. bojim Says:

    aFEDupBUCfan – Welcome dog boy.

  26. BobbyH Says:

Bucs Secondary has been weak all year. It seems to me that they are in the prevent defense all game no matter who they play. The pass rush is great but the secondary has no clue as to who to cover. I see guys out there covering nobody out there and just watching qb’s eyes.

  27. Mike Says:

I think we need White to nullify Kamara as much as possible. If the threat of him blitzing keeps Kamara from releasing, even better.

  28. David Says:

I want to see what entire D line and Devon white consistently get pressure all day. To help them do that they need tighter coverage so Brees can’t get rid of the ball in one second.
They also need the offense to run the ball and eat up some clock.

Don’t underestimate what Fournette said. He said it is still in the back of their minds that the Saints embarrassed them on national TV The last time they played.
    They’re going to bring it!!

    GO Bucs!

  29. orlbucfan Says:

Let LVD be the spy on Brees. Aim Whitehead, and the other DBs at Kamara, Thomas and whoever else is catching balls for the Aints. How hard is that? They don’t have all the offensive weapons Bucs have. Do the math. Go Mighty Bucs! 3 will be the charm in hoodooville.
