Rondé Barber Is Looking To A Front Office Career

January 28th, 2021

“Jason, what color is that? Executive of The Year burgundy?

It sounds like Buccaneers icon Rondé Barber is readying to make a career move onto the staff of general manager Jason Licht.

Barber is tight with Team Glazer and Licht, and has served as an unofficial member of the Bucs’ front office for several years. There are many examples; here’s one.

For reasons unknown to Joe, Barber’s contract to broadcast games on FOX was not renewed by the network, and he basically took a year off from football except for a weekly video for Buccaneers.com.

Speaking this week to his brother, Tiki Barber, on CBS Sports Radio, it became quite clear that Rondé Barber wants to test his hands and mind on becoming a team suit.

“You may hear it here first. But I know Rondé has maybe some designs on heading toward [working in] front offices at some point,” Tiki Barber said as he interviewed Rondé.

Rondé Barber didn’t correct his brother and went on to talk about minority hiring in the NFL, as well as how pleased he is that the Bucs are thriving with black coaches in key leadership roles and women on the staff.

Of course, Joe assumes Barber, who has lived in the Tampa Bay area since his playing days, would want to work for the Bucs if he jumped into a front office job.

Joe doesn’t know if Barber would be a quality set of eyes as it relates to being a talent evaluator, but Joe suspects he’d have value and would grow in the role under Licht’s veteran staff.

@ Joes & all Bucs fans,

Check out this Bucs Fight Song I wrote yesterday morning…

Click hotlink to go to my YouTube video of it (hopefully that’s fine, Joes)

  2. SteveK Says:

The Sage refers to Ronde as the “smartest” player in the game during his time. I would not argue, and I feel that he would adapt and do well in a front office role. I hope we hire Ronde.

  3. Locked In Says:

Not so sure about the talent evaluator… If I remember correctly, he rated Chris Conte as one of the best safeties he’d ever seen?

  4. Bobby M. Says:

Time will tell…..John Elway had a pretty great career and his only win as a GM was landing Manning on the way out.

  5. Marine Buc Says:

I would love to see Ronde working at OBP…

He definitely knows football and us highly intelligent.

One of my favorite all time Buc players.

  6. Aceofaerospace Says:

So, are fans advertising their products on this site now?

  7. miken Says:

joe, that caption made me laugh. Good stuff.

  8. BA4President Says:

Rondé being an “official member of the Bucs’ front office” sounds like a bit of a stretch. There are a crap load of people on the Front Office part of the Bucs website and he isn’t one of them.
That said, I love me some Rondé and his videos are dope. If he was fired from the preseason games, then someone done messed up!

  9. SKBucsfan Says:

I think anytime you can have intelligent , good communicating former football players on staff it is a good thing. I am looking forward to having TB12 as our OC in a couple of years.

There are many hats worn within a front office staff. If Ronde is hired by the Buccaneers, or any other team, there is no guarantee he will be involved in player evaluation. That said, I hope he gets a fair shot at a position of importance.
John Lynch, without any prior experience, went from the booth to GM. When I listened to each do a broadcast, I thought Ronde did the better job of breaking down defenses.
Under that scenario alone, if Ronde interviews well, he deserves a chance …

give em a fair shot…thats all we want!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  12. Leighroy Says:

Shelton Quarrels appears to have the lock down on the unofficial title of “former Buc player, current buc suit.” Brooks couldn’t get a front office job with the Bucs the last 5 years and had to settle for a Tampa Bay Storm role before the AFL kicked the bucket.

If Mr. Derrick Brooks couldn’t get one w the Bucs, what leads us to believe Ronde will? I certainly wish him luck if another team offers him a chance though!

    Aceofaerospace,

To a certain degree, fans have always been allowed to advertise their products or at least have a hotlink to whatever acceptable web page you want to have linked… Which could to a strait up sales page if a saavy fan did so

  14. SlyPirate Says:

The only word that should come out of Licht’s mouth is “HIRED.”

Smart, passionate, student of the game, vet, great with players … you can put him anywhere and be a better organization.

  15. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Ronde Barber = Deputy GM? As a former player like San Fran GM John Lynch, he would help attract good players….but yet Licht hasn’t had trouble picking up great free agent players.

  16. Fernando Diaz Says:

Ronde was bias on his comments at times.
He was getting bashed by fans.
Good player, thought he would coach.
    Wishing him the best

  17. adam from ny Says:

that burgundy sports coat needs to be enshrined in the halls of one buc place 🙂

  18. Noles Says:

If Locked ins recollection is right…

    RUN…..

    CONTE SUCKS

  19. Iamabuc Says:

As long as it’s not as a talent evaluator or scout.

  20. Brandon Says:

I’m not sure there has ever been a more astute film junkie at the CB position than Ronde. He was ready for everything. A little too small and a little too slow didn’t prevent him from being f a little bit better than everyone.

  21. Jim Says:

I’d hire him in a heartbeat.
