Mike Edwards And NFL History

January 19th, 2021

Living in Drew Brees’ head forever?

Yeah, it was so cool that reserve Bucs safety Mike Edwards got the interception that sealed the win for the Bucs. Equally important is how he had the presence of mind to get both feet inbounds.

Joe doesn’t know for sure if defensive backs practice this move often like receivers do, but Edwards’ play suggests he has practiced this a time or two.

In an NFL Network feature that celebrates receivers demonstrating good footwork, “Good Morning Football” co-host Nate Burleson gives Edwards love by highlighting his receiver-like feet along the sidelines and heady play getting three feet inbounds. Yes, he stepped inbounds three times, not the required two, just to make sure the zebras wouldn’t screw up.

Lost in Joe’s delight over the pick is this little NFL historic fact: It is believed that Saints quarterback Drew Brees will retire.

So if Brees retires, Edwards will be in Brees’ head forever. Why? Bree’s very last pass attempt will be Edwards’ interception.

The slimy Saints have beaten the Bucs plenty of times with Brees. Joe thinks it is cool payback that at least Brees will remember the Bucs and Edwards for the rest of his life.

That play instantly took me back to the Dwight Smith pick in the Bucs SB win.

That was some incredible footwork. Especially for a DB!

I was in awe watching it happen live.

As Bret Favre said today, that last game is going to mean less and less, be remembered less and less as time passes and Brees goes back and reflects on a superb career. I seriously doubt Edwards stays in his head for long. It will mostly be Drew remembering his last, but rare, mistake, and even that won’t last long. So glad he’s retiring though, if he does. In fact, Mike Edwards will probably remember the play (rightfully so) more than Brees does.

Was scared he was going to be the second coming of Sabby the Goat after his rookie year. Very happy to see him improve.
Sure hope he kept the ball. Lol.

The case that he enshrines it should have the label

The catch that ended Drew Brees career!

  7. Brett Says:

The last player to ever catch a pass from Brees in a game. Wow!!!!

  8. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

    Mike “Freaking” Edwards!

  9. Dewey Selmon Says:

Brady and Winston did the samething with their former franchises. Not as dramatic as Brees, but 3 QB’s last pass for a franchise is a int? I’m sure there are a couple more.

    The Gravediggers?
Well, if that is what they want, then I’ll roll with Gravediggers. I confess, I want something more intimidating. Afterall, a grave digger only works after the ‘client’ is deceased, meaning the diggers were not the cause of death. Nuance perhaps, but a cool nome de juer should strike fear, no? Think ‘Ice Man’. I know I wouldn’t want to meet that dude face-to-face, anywhere, ever. Gravediggers just does’nt make me sweat. Try again guys, meanwhile keep up the great work.
    Go Bucs!

Quick look to next year… Winfield moves to SS and Edwards steps in at FS. He has been elite against the pass, Winfield is most dangerous around the LOS. Love Whitehead but be might be the odd man out. Edwards is too good to keep off the field.

  20. TOM Says:

I don’t see the DB situation changing next year. Mike will continue to be the super sub.
