J.J. Watt And The Bucs

January 30th, 2021

Linked to Bucs.

Here’s a fun little break from Super Bowl LV coverage for Bucs crystal ball grazing.

First, the sad but hysterical news: If you haven’t heard, new Houston coach David Culley hired lousy Lovie Smith as his defensive coordinator. Word from Jacksonville is Urban Meyer secretly had another health emergency from laughing so hard upon learning of this.

In downtown Indianapolis, Colts coach Frank Reich was seen buying shots at Kilroy’s. In Nashville, Matt Vrabel danced on top of a table for a bar-hopping bachelorette party.

As the 2020 regular season ended, it was clear to anyone watching that Houston superstar defensive lineman J.J. Watt was about done with the Texans, though he still has a boundless passion for football and for winning. Unlike for park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking Bucs quarterback Tom Brady, Father Time has been tapping on Watt’s shoulder.

Lovie may be the worst guy Joe has ever seen in the NFL when it comes to player evaluation. Remember, this is a guy who didn’t want Darrelle Revis but did want Mike Jenkins. And would Watt want to close out his career with a franchise that may not have a quarterback and is likely to have a heinous defense?

(The thought of Lovie working with Vernon Hargreaves while the Bucs are NFC [Super Bowl?] defending champions is just so rich for Joe.)

Given Watt’s salary (he’s in the final year of a contract and is set to make $17 million), it seems unlikely the Texans will keep him. Besides, Lovie very likely wants nothing to do with him.

Lovie cannot judge talent, and Watt is likely to tell Lovie to go p!ss up a rope at some point. Watt also uses four-letter words from time to time. Lovie frowns on that.

Houston could release Watt without any salary cap penalty.

Watt used to be an iconic player, a one-man wrecking crew. One of the greatest defensive linemen to have ever played the game. Injuries and age have taken their toll.

The reason Watt and the Bucs are getting some run on social media is that Matt Miller, formerly of Bleacher Report, put out a list of top landing spots for Watt. He has the Bucs as the No. 1 destination.

Simply put, Miller believes Watt will want to chase a ring and who better to play for than Brady, Bucco Bruce Arians and Todd Bowles? Additionally, Joe doubts Ndamukong Suh will return.

Suh, however, is making $8 million. Will Watt want to take such a drastic pay cut?

No way is Watt worth anywhere near $17 million. And the Bucs may be cash-strapped depending what happens with NFL sack king Shaq Barrett and Pro Bowl receiver Chris Godwin.

Watt’s football numbers are very similar to Suh’s. And like Suh, Watt is versatile and can play both tackle and end in a 34 defense. Unlike Suh, Watt is injury-prone. This year is only the second time since 2015 he started more than eight games (he started all 16).

Obviously, the Bucs have to play in a Super Bowl first. And who knows how much Watt, soon to be 32, would ask for?

Joe is not advocating the Bucs sign Watt this spring if he is released. (And it is hard for Joe to see any way Houston keeps him especially if Deshaun Watson is traded). Truth be told, Suh is more reliable than Watt.

Watt on the Bucs? This team has made worse moves during the Lost Decade, right Lovie?

Trey Hendrickson… free agent in March.

  2. Bucfanforever Says:

I though this the second I saw they hired Lovie.

    Watt + TB12juice = 25 yo Watt SB win #3

  3. August 1976 Buc Says:

Worth kicking the tires at some point with Watt. We will see. Do not be so sure Suh is gone. If the Bucs Win the SB, he might just want another shot for a Lombardi trophy. GO BUCS!!!!

  4. Allbuccedup Says:

I cant believe the Texans hired Lovie. Watson better leave there appears to be no future with that organization.

  5. Joe in Michigan Says:

I wonder if Lovie Smith has changed his game plan at all since his days with the Bucs. You’d think it would have evolved over the years because of past failures, but we’re talking about Lovie here, so you never know.

  6. Rick Sloan Says:

    Who is Matt Vrabel?

  7. SB Says:

JJ Watt is going to Pittsburgh to play with his brothers. You can book that flight right now.

  8. Ufcguy32 Says:

Id take Hendrickson over jpp. I love him but adding him and barrett, draft a good dt and corner. We are set

  9. The Daily Coroner Says:

I knew the Texans were $crewed up when they traded DeAndre Hopkins, but signing Lovie Smith! That is just being brain dead.

  10. OBF Says:

    Gordon Solie…. RIP
    “Crimson Mask”

  11. sgrd0q Says:

If he wants to play for a chance to get a ring he may sign at a substantial discount.

  12. SB Says:

    ^^^^^^

  13. JimbobBucsFan Says:

I know this article was about JJ Watt who probably would enjoy playing in Pittsburgh along side his brother for a couple of years, but …

The difference between Bruce Arians and Lovie Smith who both spent a year away from NFL head coaching responsibilities is this. Bruce obviously spent the time rethinking his coaching career, how he handled himself, what he did wrong and what he had done right. He came back into the game with a grand plan in his head. He really was able to “hit the ground running” when he joined the the Tampa Bay Buccaneers only a couple of years ago.

In Ba I trust! Go Bucs! Bring home the Lombardi now!

  14. chris L Says:

lovie was terrible but this site never gives koetter the same grief. yeah fine he was “good to you joe” but the guy was a terrible HEAD coach. fyi not comparing the two just saying they were both bad. as were schiano and raheem.

  15. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Chris L

Plenty of us Gave Dork his due… don’t worry.

    Good coordinator.. terrible HC.

  16. rrsrq Says:

Lovie, like many others failed as a Bucs coach, Lovie is stubborn – but Lovie’s defense with the rams, not bad, with the Bears, the defense took them to the SB, remember the QB, Rex Grossman, not a fan of Lovie, but let’s see how he does with a second/third chance. Not ready to bury him, but I also know the Texans are a train wreck without DeSean Watson

  17. OBF Says:

Lovie Smith =‘s Chauncey Gardenir in the movie
    Being There

  18. Leighroy Says:

It’s too bad we don’t get the AFC South in the rotation until 2023. Lovie will be canned by then.

  19. Joe Says:

lovie was terrible but this site never gives koetter the same grief.

Of course not. Koetter wasn’t even close to being lousy Lovie.

Hell, Koetter won nine games his first year and lost a tiebreaker for a wild card.

You really think Koetter would have been stupid enough to run off Darrelle Revis and Donald Penn?

  20. Mitch Says:

I would be hesitant to sign him. As was stated his injury history is long and his play has declined. I don’t know if new scenery would rejuvenate him, but I wouldn’t invest a whole lot for him to come to Tampa. We need to draft Suh’s replacement or sign someone in FA.

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Here we go again with all the high-priced free agents…….I’ve got three words……not a chance.

We will be very fortunate to sign our own…..and, I suspect that it will be the defense that suffers.

  22. Gofortheface30 Says:

Oh TampaBABYbucsfan – get a bottle of whiskey, pour self a 5th, take a shot, and relax. No one is signing Watt to a 100 million dollar contract. The Bucs are in a better situation than damn near every team in the league. They’re gonna lose maybe brown, Fournette, Suh. That’s it. Sign watt to a team friendly deal, draft another DT, and the Bucs are going to be prohibitive favorites going in to next year

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Actually, I prefer Scotch……

And…..Watt is just the first FA being trotted out…….How about let’s sign Godwin, LVD, Succop, Gronk & Shaq…..then assess where we are…

I suspect that “team friendly” deal for Watt will be a bit too team friendly.

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

And….that “situation” the Bucs are in doesn’t take into consideration all of our FAs……it only considers the current contracts going forward….check it out.

  25. 6throundpick Says:

Watch how many will want to come to Tampa and play for the Bucs. Perhaps, it’s a (Buc’s) buyer’s market? I mean, Brady & team will go on a few runs. Who wants to be that? We’ll see. Lotsa good things to happen in TB, FLA.

  26. Cobraboy Says:

Joe, why do you say Suh is not coming back?

  27. DaBux Says:

I would take him in a heartbeat. He would be a good teacher at DT for a young draft pick and could split time to keep him healthy. I thought the same thing when I heard Lovie was hired and man oh man, TB12 is the gift that keeps on giving. Since other teams were stupid and didn’t hire Bowles, it means that some veteran defensive players will come here for the chance to win it all versus a big payday.

  28. SOEbuc Says:

    That Lovie sign is hilarious.

  29. JayBucsBoi Says:

Mike Vrabel, Joe. Not only are we die-hard Bucs fans here, but we are up on ALL things NFL Football and not ashamed!!

  30. Capt.Tim Says:

Suh has been reborn badass here. I would prefer him over Watts at this point.watts is primarily a pass rusher, who has lost a step.
Suh is a slab of granite- the offense cant move him.
Next to Vea, we stop the run like no one else.

That is something you dont let slip away- you try to keep it together

  31. CalBucsFan Says:

Watt has been a great player, but I would rather take care of our own. It’s a must to resign Shaq, and maybe even Suh too if his ask is reasonable.

Would like to see the draft filled with 1) the Bucs future QB to sit behind TB for a year or two, and 2) more depth on the defensive side of the ball. The offense is pretty much set already, except for a little more depth on the OL.

But first, let’s get this season’s SB trophy first, GO BUCS!

  32. adam from ny Says:

watt plays with heart and guts…

he will be good for a few more years if he’s hungry to get a ring…

i’m sure licht will keep an eye on the dude…

    but fugg this !

    we’ve got a superbowl to play !

This is one of your better “articles” !

  36. Liaastnfrmafar Says:

Watt can’t stay on the field. If Hendrickson is available he’s a better option. Watts days have passed him by. If Suh leaves there are better options, plus Watt likes to be the show, the Bucs are now all about team.

  37. Killian Says:

Sure, for $5 mil or less.

  38. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Why do you not think Suh will return, Joe? He’s playing at a high level still, and we are going to the Superbowl.

He’s not going to get more money elsewhere. Heck, we got him after a playoff run for a low price.

  39. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If we win the Superbowl, there is a very good chance Tom Brady retires.

    If that happens, goodbye Dline.

  40. Rod Munch Says:

Lovie got a top 10 defense out David, McCoy and a bunch of scrubs. Not sure if Watts wants out, but if not, he’s pretty much a perfect 4-3 DE in that Tampa 2.

  41. gotbbucs Says:

Win or lose this game, Brady won’t retire this offseason. He said he’s playing until he’s 45 and he seems like the kind that will see that promise out.

  42. Oneilbucs Says:

Lovie built a team in Chicago and lead them to a superbowl with Grosman . I’ve seen a bunch of these white coaches get Jobs and they ain’t never won nothing so good job Houston. Remember he was the first coach to get fired after going 10 and 6 and the bears ain’t been to the superbowl since Lovie . What the hell the new coach is doing now ??? Nothing just like I thought !!! Dirk was trash and yall think he was a good coach . When he retire yall giving him credit for doing nothing lol lol lol 😄😁😆😅🤣!!!

  43. Frankinthe813 Says:

Lovie’D at Illinois was terrible .. and his son was caught pimping too (look it up)

  44. All lives matter Says:

Darelle Revis wasn’t worth a million dollars a game at that point in his career, just like Watts wouldn’t be worth more than 8 million a year at this point in his career.

Brady has stated he wanted to play until 45. No matter what, barring horrendous injury, Brady will return, and I would not be surprised if he signs an extension that saves cap space for 2021 to keep as much of the band together as possible.

I never thought the SB would happen this season, too many new variables. I thought it would be next season…and another run could be done if the key pieces are kept together.

Gronk already said he’d like to come back which means Brady has told him he is coming back. No Brady, No Gronk and definitely No Brown. And yes Brady will most likely revamp his contract to preserve the team to finish his last year in style. The competition is looking a bit stiffer with the addition of Stafford to the Rams and if NO chases Watson, they can afford him and the draft picks. As.far.as.Winston, most likely playing in Canada or back up to Cam Newton in New England.

  50. Oneilbucs Says:

Yall can’t take his NFC championship away from him regardless how yall feel . Yall hate Dungy and he was the coach who made this team a winer . And yall hate him as well yall treated Dirk better than him and Dirk ain’t done nothing here . I’m convince that some of yall hate black coaches and that’s proof . So I hope Lovie is successful in Houston. I root for all black coaches because they don’t get the same chances as white coaches . So call me a race baiter all yall want but I stand for my people . I became a bucs fan because of Dungy and the Oilers leaving town back in 95 . I like how the Glazers give minority opportunities and I really appreciate that from the Glazers regardless how yall feel . Go bucs !!!

  51. Oneilbucs Says:

Cobraboy I think one of the coaches is the defense cornator with Bills and they have a top 5 defense and coach in the AFC championship right??
