Special Teams Hit By COVID?

December 15th, 2020

Ryan Succop on COVID list.

UPDATED 5:04 p.m. – Just when it appeared the Bucs were one of the fortunate teams, fresh news comes from One Buc Palace.

Perhaps the Bucs’ most consistent player, along with the team’s punter and long-snapper, were placed on the Reserve/COVID list today.

Kicker Ryan Succop, punter Bradley Pinion and long snapper Zach Triner are on the list, per the Bucs, which is for players who either tested positive or are quarantining because they came into contact with someone who had tested positive.

If a player is on the COVID list, he cannot rejoin the team until he receives two consecutive negative tests.

The Bucs have a seasoned kicker on the practice squad, Greg Joseph, who was full-time with the Browns in 2018, and he kicked in a handful of games for the Titans last year.

Well that sure sucks. Not as bad as qb but def not guys you want out and not easy to replace

Wow, 3 Key Players out for next game, OUCH

  4. Casual Observer Says:

Those guys have been money all year. Hope the tests are negative.

So much for beating the Dirty Birds.

  6. Dewey Selmon Says:

    Roberto to the rescue!

  7. Mitch Says:

It may only be one of the three that’s out. We don’t know who is positive and I believe if they are a close contact they have a chance to play Sunday as long as they test negative.

  8. Clean House Says:

    Ah who needs special teams

Just go always go for it and always go for two- maybe we can hire that girl kicker from vandy or maybe Aguayo is over the yips
A true no risk it no biscuit game headed our way

  9. Mitch Says:

@Clean House you know you may not be far off. There was an Ivy League professor once who concluded after a multi year study that teams had a higher probability of winning if they always went for it on 4th down, only went for two, and only kicked onside kicks(with a girl place kicker). I know of a high school coach that adopted the approach and won seven championship titles back to back. Not sure how applicable that strategy is to the NFL given the recent changes to onside kicks, but interesting nonetheless.

  10. stpetebucsfan Says:

    That’s two pretty different scenarios.

If they actually test positive they’re probably going to miss at least two games maybe more.

If they’re just quarantining because of coming in contact with an infected person that’s different. How far apart do the negative tests need to be? They clearly have the time to test tomorrow and then again on Saturday. Would they then if testing negative prior to the game get to play?

It’s not like a kicker can’t find a high school field to practice.

I know he’s not staying in his house but if he masks up and doesn’t go near anybody how dangerous is he?

“Thankfully, the Bucs have been far more virus-free than many teams. That speaks to the discipline of the players and Arians’ staff.

In that respect, the Bucs have been rather fortunate in a very unfortunate 2020.”

    ……………

I seem to remember reading this in an earlier article today. 🙁

  12. UKBucs Says:

Damn, knew it was too good to be true!

  13. Imhere44 Says:

So being that bringing in another kicker and punter is out because they would have to quarantine I’m curious how this plays out

  14. Clean House Says:

Mitch that’s interesting I say we try it

  15. kyle Says:

Lets hire the girl kicker from Vandy. She has to wear the swashbucklers uniforms though… Just sayn

  16. BucDan Says:

Biggest thing here is long snapper and punter.

  17. AlteredEgo Say: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Could not be a problem.. I was tested today because I was in contact with someone that now has COVID. Last time was in June and the system is streamlined now. Test results on my car ride home… negative.. so these guys if not actually testing positive will be on the field Sunday

  18. DBS Says:

Greg Joseph is the kicker on the practice squad. He would most likely punt and kick. Probably had a backup place holder in place anyway.

  19. DBS Says:

    ^long snapper

  20. Ftmyersbuc Says:

Even ifn they are positive they aren’t missing more than 1 game.

My 80 year old grandmother just got it 3 weeks ago. She texted positive on a tuesday, had a fever for 24 hours then the following Monday she tested again and was negative. When i had it back in july i was restested 2 week later and was also negative. These guys aren’t missing 2 games, no way in hell. However the real danger is an outbreak to other teammates which has a delayed onset and you keep getting new positives everyday for 7 to 10 days or so.

Also we have another kicker on the p squad

Bucs already have three specialists in COVID-19 testing protocols who could be cleared as replacements for Sunday: kicker Brett Maher, punter Dustin Colquitt and former Bucs long-snapper Garrison Sanborn. So bases are covered …

  22. Roster Says:

No one said they were out.. it’s only Tuesday. If they got out on as a precaution only need 2 consecutive Neg tests. They have plenty of time.

  23. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Big difference between testing positive and being around someone who tests positive. Let’s see how it plays out this week.

  24. Buc15 Says:

We have a kicker on our practice squad so I’m more concerned with punting/long snapping

  25. Coburn Says:

I would assume you can’t test them tomorrow and the next day.. there gotta be a certain amount of time after known exposure and between tests (example.. if you test day after exposure it’s almost guaranteed to show negative even if you have it.. after 4 days I think it’s like a coin flip whether it’ll show even if you have it)

My concern would be can they clear those tests in time before the game?

  26. Mike Johnson Says:

yes, it sucks. But guess what? We have played quite a few teams who were without some of their key players and none of you said iota about us beating them now did you? So..next man up baby. No excuses. And Just..us for all baby.

  27. Doctor Stroud Says:

    The Coach Koetter Curse?

  28. Defense Rules Says:

This has been happening in our schools every single day of the week. Teachers & students just come in proximity to someone testing positive for COVID, and they’re off to the cooler for a period of time as a precaution.

In the case of the NFL, it’s for “players who either tested positive or are quarantining because they came into contact with someone who had tested positive” like Joe wrote in the article.

No need to panic … yet. There’s still a decent chance that all 3 could play this weekend. If not, then it’s like Mike says … next man up.

  29. Mitch Says:

They also have a decent kicker Karl Joseph on the practice squad and the old long snapper Sanborn ready to step in on Sunday. I just don’t know if the punter they brought in Colquitt (spelling)? has anything in the tank.

  30. CalBucsFan Says:

Wow, good luck to those guys, hope they test negative every time….hey TB, many TDs for the offense next game, okay?…and while you’re at it, lot’s of 2-point conversions too! Go Bucs!

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I think I read somewhere once that the two negative tests have to be 8 days apart. But that was very early on and before we had 15 minute results.

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    I think they’ll promote Joseph.

That said, of all the positions a woman could come in for, I would not mind starting with a kicker. Heck, it might even turn out a good thing for us…given our recent history.

  33. ClodHopper Says:

Ocho Cinco played with Brady for a spell. We should have signed him too. He can kick a little. *Joking*

  34. Oxycondoms Says:

    Idiot kickers

  35. Coburn Says:

If I’m a player I don’t want to be lining up against female players personally. They run a fake and then you’re not lighting her up because shes a girl.like PE all over again lol

  36. Coburn Says:

But yeah hopefully I’d they miss they have a suitable replacement
