Coaching For His Career?

December 3rd, 2020

“Tom, you would really love retiring to Lake Oconee. It’s quiet unless Big Ben is cranking Guns N’ Roses. Only thing you have to deal with is damned Bulldogs fans and maybe Todd Monken knocking on your door looking for a QB.”

It seems one BSPNer thinks Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians is at a crossroads of his career and may be entering his final four games.

The Bucs offense, despite Arians pining for park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring down-forgetting, jet ski-losing, handshake-stiffing Tom Brady, is as inconsistent as it has ever been under Brady.

Mike Greenberg of BSPN has become a harsh critic of Arians. Though Arians has said repeatedly it is Brady who chooses what plays to use and what plays to call, Greenberg has turned his barrels toward Arians.

The Bucs are second in the league in yards gained on play-action passes, Greenberg. Yet Brady/Arians act like they will come down with a case of the shingles if they call play-action plays.

“Tom Brady is second in the league in yards-per-play when they run it,” Greenberg said. “But that is almost never. Only two teams have run it less. That makes no sense.”

It makes absolutely no sense. So Greenberg is dead-on there. If there is a type of play that works that well and you rarely use it, then that is just flat out irresponsible. And at the end of the day, Arians is responsible for the team.

Greenberg seems to think if the Bucs cannot find a way to get their offense running smoothly between now and the playoffs (if the Bucs make it), then Arians may be on his final weeks as head coach.

That’s rather harsh to bounce a guy who *finally* gets the team to the playoffs and whose staff is responsible for developing various young players that wasn’t happening with previous coaching staffs.

So you reward Arians for those successes by running him off?

Greenberg isn’t the only guy on a national forum who thinks the makeup of the Bucs’ name employees will look different next year. But that is for tomorrow. For today, you can see Greenberg’s full take in the BSPN video below.

I am salivating at the thought Bieniemy coming in here next year if BA leaves.

  3. WalkdaPlank Says:

Swear Tampa fans are some of the worst in sports. Not because they are obnoxious or have a big ego like their teams win all the time, but every time someone doesn’t go miles above .500 they wanna run him outta town. People gave up on Cash for the Rays then he took one of the lowest budget teams to the World Series as the youngest manager. Every year since 2008 Bucs fans wanted to fire whoever the head coach was.

This team is finally above .500 in December and you want to run the guy off because he isn’t using RoJo correctly and doesn’t let Brady dink and dunk as often as he should. Dude’s not perfect but he’s got the team performing better than anyone since Chuckie. Him and Brady are gonna retire soon anyway.

  4. Imhere247 Says:

Because Tampa isn’t a true sports town … it’s sick makes me wanna move back to mass

  5. Sesteprenelicus Says:

We’ll have to see. An 11-5 Bucs team has a very different effect from a 7-9 one.

  6. Architek Says:

Sensationalism at its finest! That’s today’s mass media to get viewership but you can’t build a foundation by changing the staff. Make Arians get a new coordinator or something.

  7. DoooshLaRue Says:

    See ya Masshole!
    Bye.

  8. Beeej Says:

I’ll say it aGAIN. We haven’t held ANYone to less than 20 since Green Bay, yet all we hear about is the offense

  9. Clean House Says:

It works so well because they never use it, hence it’s a huge surprise.
We have the ultimate play action!!

    “Crossroads of his career “?

Dude is 135…and had to take a physical just to get the job. Everybody knows he’s at the end.

Damn shame he’s not doing a better job with his last shot.

  13. crazybucs_CL Says:

    BA = Lovie S 2.0
I said that since day one he stepped in Tampa. I was waiting NOTHING from him. He is done as a coach. The problem now is that not only he is NO help for the team, but he is destroying maybe the best talent team we ever had. Sad.
Not only we are a team with no coaching help, but they(coaches) are so bad, that they are sabotaging the team.
BA = Lovie S 2.0 (including his pathetic staff)

  14. ArmchairGM Says:

    @WalkdaPlank

Bucs fans are simultaneously the most optimistic and pessimistic fan base. Every offseason is “our year” and in-season it’s “same ole bucs.” The national pundits all expected the Bucs to go from basement to elite in one season. That rarely happens. Going from basement to playoff team is a huge step. National pundits are looking to generate more clicks with sensationalism.

I’m optimistic about the Bucs. The next 4 games might change my mind. Either way, you need to get to the playoffs to have a chance to win the super bowl. There are undoubtedly teams with less talent than the Bucs who have won it. Examples are 2007 and 2010 Giants teams.

  15. Gettinthebucs Says:

Gotta run the ball man. Its plain and simple. Everybody knows it.

  16. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Armchair

Problem isn’t the talent.. it’s the coaching.

  17. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

BA is too stubborn and thick skulled to adapt. He’s a dinosaur.

  18. Dewey Selmon Says:

I thought the dude was overrated and a blowhard but was excited with what he could do with Winston. Pittsburgh didn’t extend his contract for reasons and he has 1 playoff win. Brady could elevate BA’s legacy, or BA might be considered a fossil in today’s NFL spread offense.

  19. Dewey Selmon Says:

dinosaur and fossil in consecutive posts. that has to be a sign

  20. Defense Rules Says:

I’m surprised no one has said anything about Mike Greenberg’s video. Don’t have any way to know if his stats are accurate, but if they are, that raises a LOT of questions for the Bucs’ offense. And I’m sure for the Glazer Boyz.

Yes the Bucs are 7-5 entering December, and that’s significantly better than we normally sit at this time of year. Yes we’re still in the playoff hunt with 4 games to go against 3 teams with losing records. And yes, we’ve got a LOT of talent on this team, and are reasonably healthy right now.

BUT … Bucs have lost 3 out of our last 4 games, with all 3 losses coming against teams with winning records. That’s not exactly the way you want to ‘peak’ when making a playoff run. Thankfully we’ve got this BYE week to get our act together. It’ll be interesting to see if BA & the rest of his ‘trusted cadre’ are up to the task. HOPEFULLY they are.

  21. Defense Rules Says:

@Imhere247 … “Because Tampa isn’t a true sports town … it’s sick makes me wanna move back to mass”

Kudos, you certainly do know how to make friends & influence people. Didn’t take long for others to take you up on your offer. Have a nice trip.

  22. SB Says:

Buh bye 247 . You Won’t be missed

  23. Brevard Buc Says:

Seems like sound logic in Greenburg’s take. More play-action, motion, and running the ball. Wow, what a revelation!!!

NFL coaches with the I am the smartest guy in the room complex only works for Belichick.

  24. ModHairKen Says:

Greenberg is a vote and uninteresting. Nobody likes him. Nobody respects him.

But what caught me was this: “That’s rather harsh to bounce a guy who *finally* gets the team to the playoffs and whose staff is responsible for developing various young players that wasn’t happening with previous coaching staffs. ”

Yeah, is that right? Who? Jameis?

  25. Joe in Michigan Says:

How did Greenberg ever get a speaking job? He talks like he has a mouthful of marbles. I remember this guy, how he’d always say that Tony Dungy was boring, never took chances, etc. So the Bucs go for a fake punt on a Monday night game and don’t convert. Greenberg said trying a fake punt was “unconscionable”. Talking out of both sides of his mouth, on one hand saying Dungy was too conservative, then criticizing him for taking a chance. Haven’t listened to him since, and that was in the 90’s.

  26. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Joe in Michigan

Just heard how horrid the weather is on the UP from my SIL.

We can enjoy the Bucs and know win or lose it’s another day in paradise.

  27. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

I wouldn’t be surprised to see McDaniel show up if Brady plays a 2nd year.

  28. Joe in Michigan Says:

SPBF: I’m a “troll”, as in living under the bridge (Southwest Michigan). You’ve got to LIKE snow to live in the UP!
I’ve got a good feeling about the last 4 games. If Minn, Det, or Atl had a good pass rush I’d feel differently. I’m not ready to fire or force Arians into retirement just yet. I didn’t agree with the Bucs firing Tony Dungy and Jon Gruden at the time.

  29. Jmarkbuc Says:

I thought McDaniel was the heir apparent in New England?

  30. REDZONE BA Says:

Been an avid reader of JBF site forever, and joined as a poster when BA was announced as coach, as I was excited that the self-anointed QB Whisperer could take a young QB in JW and max out his skills with our talented players, while solving our past red zone issues, hence, my handle Redzone BA….

Was frustrated in 2019 that BA did not adjust the offense to help with TO’s and instead gave the instruction to JW to “keep slinging it” midseason after horrible TO’s. The self-anointed QB whisperer’s solution was to greyhound-bus our 1st rd QB and bring in the GOAT for instant success and a “win it now” SB plan.

Jiminy Xmas – now the QB whisperer is passive-aggressively blaming the GOAT for offense issues – “he calls the plays”. Yikes! Perplexing is understatement. On one hand, stats indicate success and we are 7-5, and will make the playoffs. Yet, with the all-star talent on offense, clearly some disfunction on offensive side of the team.

Perhaps the bye will allow for adjustments that get us on track to max this talent. I jumped the gun with my handle as I was so confident in BA. My view now is that BA’s MO was to be a golf-riding, play my scheme CEO vs hands-on teaching Coach. Which is why he wanted Brady. For instant plug-in success.

The hybrid approach is faulty right now. For 5 years, our WR’s were used to JW scrambling when the line broke (often). Brady is quick-release precision QB and no scrambling. WR’s like Mike are still adjusting to this offensive culture change and requirement to run PRECISE ROUTES.

If BA and Brady stick to the long pass offense, we are in trouble. The next 4 opponents are weak in rush D, so we (fans) will be happy until the playoffs. I am a poster who believes Bucs would have “made playoffs” in YR2 with JW with the improved running game. But our mantra for getting Brady was SB, not just playoffs appearance.

One game playoff run when playoff-teams rush the hell out of Brady. And for posters who say we would not have the FA’s if JW was QB – how are they doing so far for impact?

  31. gotbbucs Says:

Pretty hard to argue against any of the points he made. Almost every single person with above average football IQ can see these things.

If they are in fact letting Brady call what he wants, and they all know its not working but won’t attempt to stop him, then what the hell is the point of Bruce looking like a jackass on the sideline with that stupid electronic dohicky strapped across chest and that shield over his face? He can go watch the game from Georgia. If nobody in that building has the balls to tell Brady to his face that it needs to change, but they can get in front of a camera and say it, they need to go.

I honestly don’t have much interest in seeing Brady or Arians on the team next year. Arians is approaching Chucky Gruden level of annoyance for me. With all the player blaming and the stupid sideline looks, I can do without it.

  32. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Robert Saleh…

If he could put together a good staff… would be my choice.

  33. REDZONE BA Says:

I will add to my “in moderation” comments that are yet to be posted…..

Strange dynamic that the AB signing (Brady) coincides with our offensive woes. If BA is the coach, and DID NOT want AB > my question is, who is running BUCs > JL, BA, or Brady???

  34. August 1976 Buc Says:

    Yawn lol GO BUCS!!!!!

  35. Buczilla Says:

I always liked the other Mike more.

  36. Alanbucsfan Says:

The NFL is a tough league.
Last year, Minnesota lost 3 of their last 5 games, then knocked the Saints out of playoffs. Tennessee lost 2 of their last 3 games, then knocked the Patriots and Ravens out of playoffs.
Bucs have their playoff future in their hands- that’s all us fans can hope for.

  37. BucEmUp Says:

Lets get more specific in the brady calling plays deal. They are letting Brady choose certain plays in certain situations and giving him a selection of THEIR plays to choose from at certain times.

Brady wants to run his game more often. I believe he wants to play more deep ball than he did in New England as well, however he also knows that the short game SETS UP the deep ball and Leftwich and Arians are trying to FORCE the deep ball.

The entire team has poor body language and nobody is feeling it. Bruce put togehter a hell.of a squad with Licht, but any coach that doesnt succeed with this roster should be cast to the depths of football incompetence hell.

  38. BucEmUp Says:

You know what else works really well that they never do, give Rojo 20 carries a game.

  39. Oneilbucs Says:

Lol lol 😆🤣😂 during the summer yall were saying we finally got rid of the problem wich was Jamies . Now it Bruce Arians fault with his out dated playbook wich I was telling yall but yall said I didn’t know what I was talking about . I also told yall we needed a running game but yall said it was a excuse for Jamies . It took Brady to come here and now yall understand because of Brady . Wich he’s not played well but yall trying to give him passes . Brady will not be here next year hopefully !!! No excuses !!!

  40. University of Seffner Says:

Well fellow Bucs fans, it could be worse, like the Leeman Bennett era… after all he came out of a 3 year retirement from the NFL to sell recreational vehicles before coming to coach here.

  41. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @AlanBucs

“Bucs have their playoff future in their hands- that’s all us fans can hope for.”

    Amen brother!

  42. Clean House Says:

    I Like Alan’s post

  43. REDZONE BA Says:

    @Oneilbucs — 100% agree.

  44. REDZONE BA Says:

I’m thrilled Bucs are finally relevant, and will make the playoffs.

But playoffs are not the 2020 goal – winning SB is why we got the GOAT. 2020 is ALL-IN for SB with this all-star roster.

Whether BA or Tom is running the team, Bucs have to get in sync – NOW!

2021 is a question mark if 2020 SB run fails, given the reduced Cap and not being able to re-sign key D players.

  45. Dan Williamson Says:

Maybe with back to back 500 mph hurricanes we could get all you displaced northerners to actually go back to mass. Im tired of non buc fans on here acting like they are bucs fans. Shaddup and listen. Its arians and leftwiche. Tom is only picking from the plays Arians allows, not the plays he wants. The play calling, route running and defense have sucked. Dont blame the goat. Blame the coaches. Blame the defense. Blame the O line.

  46. NOLES Says:

    Im Here….

Go ahead and move back to Mass…

No one cares.. Tampa has plenty of quote unquote sports fans…

My god you NE have a big ego..

  47. Jazzy Says:

no offseason to build chemistry brady trying to learn an entirely different playbook scheme language and receivers and different teaching style from coaches and we are still averaging 27 points a game with potential to get better going to the bye to get some more chemistry building fixing some miscues plus some much needed rest and a achievable shot at the playoffs. Could it be better sure much more likely could have been worse given the circumstances go bucs

  48. Hodad Says:

McDanial waiting for Bill to retire, he’ll be waiting a long time. Plus Bill has his kid working as a coach for the team. Who do you think he’ll want to take over when he goes? I could see this team breaking up next year whether we win the S.B., or fail badly trying to reach it.

  49. BucBuzz Says:

This website is the most decisive Tampa Bay Buccaneer site. It is against even the dream of the Bucs ever being a consistent winner. The author knows even less than the fans. This site is worse than fake news, it’s no news at all. Nothing written by this punk is uplifting. Ever!

  50. Brandon Says:

Kobe, you’re a dunce of the lowest order. Rojo ran for 190 yards. Shouldn’t that have given us a two month reprieve from your stupidness?

  51. DalvinCookRules Says:

There’s nobody who can question the talent level on this team. The Bucs just need a good coach, preferably one who isn’t 10-15 years past his prime.
