Bucs Wave Goodbye, Fail To Protect Josh Rosen

December 23rd, 2020

Bucs GM Jason Licht

Interesting news from ProFootballTalk.com about practice squad quarterback Josh Rosen bolting the Buccaneers for the 49ers yesterday.

Joe found the whole Rosen phenomenon to be a big yawner. If the Bucs really thought very highly of him, he would have been on the 53-man roster rather than exposed on the practice squad to be plucked by another team.

That’s what happened yesterday, when QB-challenged San Francisco came calling.

But esteemed NBC Sports insider Mike Florio noted that Rosen had many offers through this season but wouldn’t leave Tampa for just anyone who would pay him a real-roster wage.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Rosen declined multiple other opportunities to leave Tampa’s practice squad for a 53-man roster. The San Francisco offer was, in Rosen’s view, the right one to accept.

This further illustrates to Joe where the Bucs were with Rosen. Certainly, Tampa Bay officials knew Rosen was being pursued, but the Bucs did nothing to stop it.

Joe’s not complaining. There’s no evidence that Rosen can be “the guy” to succeed Tom Brady.

  1. Pete Mitchell Says:

They’re going to bring back JW to be the quarterback of the future.

  2. Robert Says:

just means they plan on drafting a qb or picking someone they think has potential off the street (i.e like Tannehill, which I was calling for years back and dumping jdub)

  3. Casual Observer Says:

Rosen must not have impressed the coaches during his TB tenure. No big problem.

  4. Robert Says:

    lol @ ptet…..rflmao

  5. #1bucfan Says:

Welp. I hope we have a plan to replace TB we all know he’s not the future and we don’t need to follow what happened when we got gruden. We weren’t thinking about the future we were in win now mode but look at the lost decade after what we gave up to get gruden and then he ran our team in to the ground. We can win now and still prepare for the future let’s be smart Tampa

  6. Cometowin2 Says:

I was hopeful that Rosen could of been developed to be the next guy. We know that Gabbert is not the guy despite him being by Brady’s side every game. I would have more confidence in Griffin but don’t think we have our next quarterback. We need another tackle to replace Smith and another cornerback with the first two picks.

  7. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

I’m guessing with the salary cap drop next year the Bucs will most likely draft a QB to learn under Brady for a year. That QB will of course received rookie pay as opposed to say…Carson Wentz’s bloated salary.

  8. huh Says:

    Thank goodness. Rosen was terrible

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This was inevitable…..I’m surprised it took this long…Bucs simply didn’t want him or he would have replaced Griffin…..

As for drafting a QB…….don’t be surprised if we don’t….we need to draft a couple of starters to replace higher salaries……
    OLB, LT…..for example….

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Maybe 3rd round or later on the QB….

  11. Reddington Neck Shores Says:

Kyle trask if he drops, but we need defensive backs so badly it’s hard to imagine anything else. Our shutdown corner showed what we brought to the table against KC. We need more at that table.

  12. Cobraboy Says:

    Disappointed.

You never know what he had until a full off-season’s work. Mid-season game prep is not when you groom a QB unless disaster strikes.

Besides, he’s a west coast guy from LA. SF prolly feels almost like home.

  13. Cobraboy Says:

    DL/OL/CB in the draft.

  14. J Dubb Says:

I think we release one of if not both our backups and bring in Sam Darnold to back up Brady for a year with the intention of taking over in 2021…plus he is an upgrade at back

  15. J Dubb Says:

    * back up

  16. BradyBucs Says:

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stop with the “We need to draft corners.”

Anyone that knows the NFL should now know (as the Bucs have learned the hard lessons) that drafting cornerbacks is the hardest position to scout with the most RISK.

We should never be drafting corners in the first 4 rounds. We should be signing proven Vet corners in FA only. It’s a passing league and that’s the toughest position to play. That and pass rush specialists are the primary FA positions. We can draft cornerback development prospects late in the draft that ‘might’ eventually pan out, but we can’t gamble on drafting corners high anymore. Free Agency all the way.

  17. Grizam Says:

Need to bring in a veteran who isn’t a diva or draft as this years QB prospects look good but may not be any left when we pick?

  18. Greg Says:

This might bite them in the ass later. We’ll see

  19. onetrickpony Says:

Reddington Neck Shores ……. I’ll second on that on Trask

  20. Upthegut Says:

Lynch is poaching our players too often. Let’s go after some of his UFA in the off season.

  21. timbucs2 Says:

I’d like to see us take a shot at Darnold when he is cut/traded this offseason. See what he could do learning from Brady for a year + a scene change from the screaming void that is Jets football.

  22. Beeej Says:

Last I heard, there is a fair chance the cap won’t drop, owing to the likelihood that fans will be in the seats

  23. Anonymous Says:

So next year Brady’s the only quarterback on the roster so much for looking at the future.

  24. Frankinthe813 Says:

    BA likes veterans….like Stafford 😉

  25. catcard202 Says:

Joe, am I wrong in believing that if the NEXT Bucs #1QB hasn’t been on this roster to benefit from the “Brady Effect”…Setting with the GOAT in QB meetings, seeing how the GOAT prepares & practices…Learning to be a Pro’s Pro from the GOAT…Than it’s an organizational failure & another huge indictment of this FO???

  26. Bucsfanman Says:

It’s funny how we go from a story about releasing a practice squad QB to…”There’s no future, the sky is falling!”

Hey, the guy got his shot. I’m not mad at him, or the Bucs. We’ll see what the offseason holds once we get there.
For now though, who cares?! We’re this close to being in the playoffs!!!
    Go Bucs!

  27. adam from ny Says:

evidently they took their long look at him and said “nah”

look at him and look at josh allen in buffalo…

    what happened

  28. Blake Says:

Stop with all the Darnold talk… Everyone knows Redheads can’t play QB!

  29. Rod Munch Says:

If the Bucs are complete idiots, they’ll attempt to bring back Winston next year to back up Brady and then take over again the following year. Anywho who thinks Gabbert should be our backup is a low IQ mongoloid.

  30. Jedleman Says:

You guys do realize that Brady’s going to play until he’s 47 right. He’s in better shape than most 30 year olds. Just keep a good line in front of him. He’s throwing freaking lazers out there.

  31. BradyBucs Says:

    “Bring Winston back…” ROFLMAO.

Yeah, right. They’ve moved on from Winston. He’s not coming back. You Winston homers need to accept that and move on.

  32. sincethebeginning Says:

Meh. He’s going back to California to be closer to Mommy. Good for him. Jim Mora was absolutely right about that dude. I hope he’s investing these contracts he’s getting wisely.

  33. AlteredEgo Say: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

    “Bring Winston back “… ROTFLMAO

  34. m0j0 Says:

Niners have poached several Bucs recently. Lynch is one shady mf.

  35. Sport Says:

Who exactly are these players the 49rs took that we want back. Hell Kwon isn’t even on their team anymore and was paid a number we wouldn’t have matched.

I get it. Many of us are conditioned to talk about our future this time of year. Studying the top ten picks, Joe clamoring for the pick we have no shot of getting….

Winning football teams don’t whine about a QB needed while in a frigging playoff hunt!

Check yourselves and enjoy the the friggin season we are in!!!

    In BA I Trust!

  36. Jmarkbuc Says:

Lynch ain’t shady.. he’s freakin smart.

Took a team that was a dumpster fire to the SB in three years. Built a Helluva team.

Love me some John Lynch. Gotta hand it to the SF owners… They’ve made a lot of bad decisions, but hiring Lynch out of the booth was brilliant.

  37. BigMacAttack Says:

I think it’s too early to pull the plug on our DBs. They did that on Talib and look how that turned out. They still need more time to learn the game and get better. I’d consider selling the draft like Atlanta did for Julio and go get Tyler Lawrence. He’s got big potential especially under Tom Brady. But that ain’t going to happen. Licht’s balls aren’t that big. But Bryan Glazer’s are 😂. I think the Bucs will draft DE first, OT second and Safety 3’rd. Seriously though, I have no clue. Just win baby

  38. UKBuccaneer Says:

I’d love to see Stafford on the bucs, but the finances won’t allow it. Dude will be a SB winning QB if he’s given the pieces around him. Total stud.

  39. Costa Rica John Says:

Brady doesn’t want to go anywhere cold again so I think he will finish his days here in Tampa. By the time he is done Byron Leftwich will be gone as offensive coordinator and Brady can replace Leftwich. The next QB can still learn under Brady that way.
