“You Never Know”

November 17th, 2020

Learning Tom Brady.

Joe will always credit his high school coach for one saying. It was three words but they meant a lot.

Whenever Joe would ask what tendencies an opponent had for various situations — down and distance, time of game, score, etc. — Joe’s coach used to smile, shake his head and say, “You never know.”

But Joe knew what he meant: Tendencies are just an educated guess. To play good, smart defense and not get caught out of position, you must be ready for anything and look for everything. In other words, it’s all about preparation.

So Bucs receiver Chris Godwin, as he explained to Albert Breer of SI.com, said he learned through training camp and the first few games of the season, that when he or one of his fellow receivers run a route for park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, jet ski-losing Bucs quarterback Tom Brady, you never know. You never know when or if or where the ball will be coming.

Godwin said he learned to be prepared and adjust on the fly. And boy, did Godwin do that in the Bucs’ second possession Sunday. He ran a route along the right sideline and under a little pressure, Brady rifled a pass the only place he could get it to Godwin and that was right between two defenders.

With maybe a blink of an eye to adjust after breaking out of his cut, Godwin came down with the ball and a first down.

Godwin explained to Breer.

“I was just as surprised as everyone else was about that throw,” Godwin said. “I wasn’t supposed to be right there. But just based on how the defense was playing, sometimes [Brady] sees things that most of us don’t really see.

“I think we learned that early in the season, through training camp and early in the year. My mentality is I’m just trying to stay alert, so when the ball comes, it can come at any point in time and at any angle, so you’ve just got to stay ready. That was a phenomenal pass.”

Now of course, a cynic would say Godwin got a lot of practice for those traits catching balls from Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

OK, fair.

But Joe will Brady holds his receivers to a much higher standard and expectations than Jameis ever did.

    Donovan Smith, baby.

  3. Allbuccedup Says:

When Godwin is healthy hes one of the top 5 wide outs in the league. Probaby the best hands.

  4. miken Says:

@look at my stats. Man, #78 doesn’t even try to get in his way. Reminds me of the line from Major League…” Enough of this O Lay BullSh#t.”

We are going to get a good look at the progress of this offense in Monday nights game. Can they handle pressure. Godwin and company better be ready for Tom to pass quickly against the pass rush coming to Tampa. Game will be a good measuring stick to see the progress after the Saints and the Bears. Here is a funny story about how Magic Johnson had a unique way of teaching teammates to ready for the Ball at anytime. In practice one time James worthy got nailed upside the head from a pass by Magic when he was not ready and aware during practice. James Worthy talked about how you had better be ready at all times unless you want to get nailed, lol he was speaking from experience. LOL So guys be ready for Bradys passes lol. GO BUCS!!!!

  6. diggler Says:

    GOOOOOTDAYUM!

  7. HeyItsAdam Says:

I could not believe that throw. Between 4 people….and Evans didn’t attempt to get a hand on it.

PS. That route for the Bucs has gone for a Pick 6 about 7,294 times in the past 6 years.

  8. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Don’t know why BL got 2 out routes curling over in the same area only 5 yards away. That’s how Brady got that pick6. He just don’t v learn. If anything Evans should’ve broke straight up the field he had a step on his man. Brady got REAL lucky it wasn’t picked. Winston woulda been called an idiot for throwing it into such coverage even if he completed it.

Funny thing we really beat up on the Detroit Lions didn’t we???

  9. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Stats,

    Yeah man, Donovan is pathetic.
    No technique and LAZY.
    He needs to go STAT!

  10. Bucsalltheway Says:

That was a bail out catch

  11. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Miken

    You mean 76 right?

  12. miken Says:

@Larue… yes, Donavan The Matador Smith 76

  13. gotbbucs Says:

Brady was ready to put that pass on the sideline but he couldn’t because Donovan Smith was doing such a nice job in his “bounce back” game.

Very lucky that wasn’t a fumble. That was barely even a pass rush move. Smith is such a lazy pile. One of the worst waiste benders in the game.

  14. DoooshLaRue Says:

Winston woulda been called an idiot for throwing it into such coverage even if he completed it.
    ________

So you have a problem with the truth I see……

  15. SufferingSince76 Says:

Donavan Smith exposed again. Oh, but when he’s good…….! Uh huh.

  16. Brandon Says:

I’ve heard more than one person say that the pass was intended for Mike Evans… all i know is that one of the receivers ran the wrong route. You should never have two receivers in the same area like that.

  17. 813bucboi Says:

    david

godwin said he wasnt suppose to be there….

he adjusted his route obviously without evans knowing….brady and godwin were on the same page….

    BL is working magic!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  18. Ericb Says:

Man yall still on JW hahaha thats hilarious bc the stats that brady has are on another level compared to JW and ummm the bucs are winning…and this carolina team barly missed beating the chiefs…the bucs would be 3-7 right now with JW and and if …if he starts now that brees is hurt well take first in NFC very soon..stay tuned

  19. Robert Says:

love TB, but think he got lucky on that one.

  20. DoooshLaRue Says:

I wonder what it’s like in the OL film room the following week?
I mean do they act like this lazy sh!t 76 isn’t happening, because it just continues game after game.
If he does have a “decent” game it’s because the DE sucks. He doesn’t impose his will he just reacts (poorly) and lets his guy by.

  21. Casual Observer Says:

It was a great catch. There were several in that game. What a phenomenal group of WRs. Some great passes too, of course. Keep it up!

  22. dmatt Says:

DSmith just let the DE rush right past him. No urgency at all to protect Brady. Aaron Donald n company will not miss out on the sacks opportunity. DSmith is lazy n is out to do the bare minimum. Let’s get creative n keep Shipley at center n move Jensen at LT once Marpet returns. I’d rather try that knowing Jensen will consistently smack n fight before allowing u to hit his QB. He’s a true grit type player n on the other hand DSmith is a true sh!t type player.

  23. AJ Says:

Understatement of the year…but this offense is just on another level w Godwin in the lineup. Seems he opens things up for everyone. And is that release valve that is always open. Stay healthy Chris!!!!

  24. Jersey buc Says:

Ol bum ass Smith getting beat again.
    He sucks

  25. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

That was one hell of a catch – all to CG’s credit. IMO, Brady’s pass was WAY off. I might be wrong, but it did not look to me that the ball should have been at that spot. One heck of a catch CG!

  26. D1 Says:

    Senor harry,

That pass looks a lot different, perfect placement, if you see it from behInd brady. It’s an opening in the coverage and it’s just that spot to throw to that looks open.

  27. Dan Williamson Says:

Donovin smith sucks. His big fat mullet smellin ass is too slow to block any elite pass rusher. In Arians interview after the saints game he mentioned all except smith as to why brady was sacked, hurried and harrassed the whole game. Brees didnt even seat ir get his game jersey dirty. Thats the difference. Our offensive and defensive lines played like crap or Tom wins that game. ‘Nuff said.

  28. Dan Williamson Says:

You Born and raised in Tampa. 66 years old. Pulled the nets for the Miami game the first year. Suffered fir years. We have NEVER had an offense this good and Brady is the difference. If I hear one more negative word from fans who dont look at the reasons we didnt win the saints game or why Brady looked so bad or intimate that it is his fault I will lose my freaking mind. Open your eyes. Brees untouched. Hes hall of fame. He carved. Brady the GOAT. If hes untouched we win. If our defensive line pressures and sacks brees, gets him off his spot we win.

  29. Dan Williamson Says:

Our offensive line isnt the problem. Donovan Smith is the problem. Our defensive line isnt the proble. Vita vea is the problem. When hes healrhy and providing that push up the middle while being double teamed our pass rushers can feast. His wheels are frail from all the weight he carries. Donovan Smiths first step is okay, but his second is as slow as my dear departed grandma’s. Our LB corp is elite and our back four is coming 9n and talented. Ronald Jones and fournette are way above average. We have the greatest QB that ever laced up cleats. Not physically, mentally. His competitive nature is off the charts. His football intellect has never been equaled. His arm is strong enough to make all throws with accuracy. Hes a drop back and needs time, not much he gets it off quicker than anyone, but he has to be protected for that amount of time. NONE of the losses go on Tom. Its a cleansing of failure culture, winning and demand for excellence that he brings to T town and those that dont rise must leave.

  30. Dan Williamson Says:

And another thing. The devil crab they make in Tampa now sucks. No flavor or soupy, not enough fresh crab or fake. I make the only real devil crab in existence because I cared enough to go into Ybor city and talk to the old cubans from the 50’s and 60’s who like I do remember what a REAL devil crab tasted like.Found out what they used in their sofrito for their sauce, the herbs and spices and aromatics. How it simmered for hours. How they used real unleavened cuban bread for their dough for that most delicious of 6 inch croquettes . how they used sofrito in the breading. Just like the devil crab we tried to fake it with Jameis winston. A qb who just threw it up with a 50% chance of intercetion or touchdown. And fans enjoyed it and some were pissed he was allowed to leave. Why? He sucked. Just like todays devil crab. We have the real deal in Tom Brady. Bend knee and appreciate the time we have to experience his greatness. Just like the devil crab I am dabbing hot sauce on right now.
