Shaq Winning At The Line
November 11th, 2020The statgeeky term “win-rate” Joe has only been familiar with for a year. But when it comes from NextGen Stats, it’s not hocus-pocus.
NextGen Stats don’t lie. The raw data is straight from high-tech sensors on game equipment. No subjective “grades” nonsense. Just real info.
For a defensive player, a “win-rate” basically means if the guy can shed blocks or take on and disengage a block. And for Bucs outside linebacker and NFL sack king Shaq Barrett, he’s getting the job done on both passing and running plays.
BSPN, using NextGen Stats, has an updated list of the top win-rate for outside linebackers/edge rushers on all plays. Shaq is in the top-10 against the pass and the run.
The charts below are for the first half of the NFL season.
On pass rushes, Shaq ranks No. 9 among edge/OLB rushers. He wins at the line on 22 percent of his pass rushes. T.J. Watt of the Steelers is tops at 31 percent.
When it comes to beating blocks on run plays, Shaq is also No. 9 in the NFL with a win-rate of 28 percent. Brandon Graham of the Eagles is No. 1 shedding run blocks at a 36 percent rate.
So Shaq is consistently getting the job done at the line of scrimmage. Offenses likely are doing something with chip blocks on Shaq to keep his sack totals down considerably from last season.

shaq and jpp are doing their jobs…
offenses know attack DW with RBs out the backfield and attack whitehead with TEs….
both are liabilities in pass coverage…
GO BUCS!!!!

I’ve been saying it all season that Shaq Barrett is having a very good year. People need to stop being hung up by sack numbers. He’s a huge reason why the team as a whole is among the league leaders in sacks.

If I count right, only 4 players are in the top 10 on both lists. Shaq looks like the 4th of those 4. Very excellent.

Shaq seems to end up behind the QB on pass plays.
