Reading Defenses
November 18th, 2020Without going into a repetitive, long dissertation, “this Joe” doesn’t mind the PFF tribe when they put out stats.
It’s the way the PFF tribe pushes their GD juvenile, worthless AF grades that makes Joe want to take an aluminum baseball bat to his hard drive.
(Joe is pretty sure Al Gore didn’t invent the internet so dudes in Irish dorm rooms could pump out vapid, mindless, worthless grades on NFL players and sell them to a blind, gullible public.)
But “this Joe” does find some of the PFF tribe’s stats — not grades; but stats — useful if not enlightening.
This is one of those times.
Per the PFF tribe, no quarterback in the NFL has completed passes to receivers in single coverage more than park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, jet ski-losing Bucs quarterback Tom Brady.
And it is not even close. In fact, Brady has completed 20 percent more into single coverage than the next-best quarterback.
Tom Brady: 94 completions when targeting single coverage
19 more than any other QB

You know what this tells Joe? Brady may be middle-aged, but the dude doesn’t need bifocals yet. Sure seems like Brady is able to quickly read defenses, identify the best target, and get the ball to his target.

I agree with you on PFF’s stats.

Brady may be middle-aged, but the dude doesn’t need bifocals yet….

and the previous qb did…lol….
GO BUCS!!!!

That’s part of the reason the Giants game was close. Who is bothering to cover Mickens? Can he even catch? Throw it to double covered Evans and you have a better chance.

I’ll just add it’s nice NOT to see our QB stare down a receiver before throwing it to other team. Nuff said.

Well said, Joe. It is his ability to so quickly make the best decision – the main reason he is the GOAT.

What’s an Irish Dorm Room?

I assumed it had something to do with Notre Dame University and football. One of the Joes is a Midwesterner like myself. An obscure reference.

It’s because PFF was founded in the UK and most of the play by play stat tallying is done by low paid college students.

Its almost like we have Tom Brady under center.
Oh, wait…

Readers come on at 43 – didn’t need the trifocals until early 50’s – at some point, that wristband isnt going to have enough space for the font size needed…
maybe the TB12 method works on degenerative eye conditions also 🙂

because he doesn’t force the ball. same reason ME’s numbers are down. I’ll take it!

Joe, it would be nice to know if he has more single coverage completions because he is more accurate or because he has had more attempts. He does lead the league in total attempts, so it could be the latter.
Also, what percentage of his attempts are into single vs double coverage? That would speak more to his ability to read a defense.

Zero idea. And if Joe took the three (four?) work days it might take to go over all of that film to find out, there would be significantly fewer stories on this site.
If the tribe has the information you are looking for, they haven’t shared it to Joe’s knowledge.

not to mention this also limits turnovers

GOAT.
