“Mad Mike” And Pleasing Coaches

November 16th, 2020

Antonio Brown is working hard to be Buccaneers teammate of the year.

Or perhaps he’s not working hard and it’s just coming naturally for him to be a team-first guy.

Brown was the emergency punt returner in yesterday’s Bucs-Panthers game and he took a personal-foul hit after calling for a fair catch. That’s not part of Brown’s plan to win a new contract from someone next season, getting hurt on a cheap shot on a punt that could have been caught by a bottom-of-the-roster guy.

But after the game Brown hopped on a virtual news conference with Joe and other media and talked about being so happy to do whatever coaches ask of him. Brown didn’t say he loved being a 32-year-old punt returner, but he did say the right things.

Joe found it noteworthy that Brown said Mike Evans is “always inspiring and encouraging,” and he praised Evans as a man who delivered a great “finish the mission” message to fellow receivers all week. He also said he’s one of the great receivers in the NFL and the two had an offseason relationship.

“I call him Mad Mike,” Brown said. “Once he get angry he plays even better.”

Joe asked Brown how well he’s playing and whether he’s feeling 100 percent fluid at game speed with Tom Brady. It’s obvious they’re not in full synch yet.

Brown replied talking about jelling and all that matters is winning. He also added that things will get better between them as time marches on.

It’s three weeks into the Brown era and all is quiet, calm and healthy, even if the Bucs have forced things to Brown in his two games. That seemed to disappear in the second half yesterday, so Joe is encouraged.

They do have three legit #1 WRs in Evans, Godwin, and Brown. Scotty Miller would be a low end #1 or good #2 on most teams. Tyler Johnson is probably a #3 on most teams. And there’s our 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 WRs…. that’s pretty deep.

  5. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

I think Evans is a future HOFer but man is Godwin a stud…he reminds me of a former bucs WR Lawrence Dawsey, who just caught everything especially in traffic when he knew he was going to get whacked

  6. Pablo Says:

Lol what team would Miller be a #1 WR ON ????

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Brown looked good yesterday and he looked to be in very good game shape already…..obviously, he’s been working hard on his conditioning.

I was impressed with his presser……and would like to know what his prescribed & un-prescribed medication protocol is.

I still don’t view it as them forcing anything to Brown. He’s Antonio Brown. Would anyone prefer to NOT throw it to him! He made a few unreal catches yesterday, and showed great run after catch ability on a few balls yesterday. If the wind didn’t screw around with Brady’s deep ball we’re talking talking about a 9 catch 150yd game for that guy in only his second game in two yrs. That works for me. Godwin still got ample looks, Evans had a ton of looks. Outside of red zone stuff (which will get cleaned up) it was the perfect offensive game. Looking forward to them breaking their prime time curse next week. I expect this team to fly around next Monday under the lights on those all pewters!

    @ pablo

The tampa bay storm lol. Tampa fans have a habit of over valuing “the little engine that could” players while trying to trade or get rid of bonafide stars like they are easily replaced ala aqib talib etc. We are still looking for a #1 cornerback and talib was traded 10 years ago. Maybe davis is that guy hopefully. We have those on this site right now that think trading evans is a viable option. I have said it before and yesterday further confirms this…..how did trading your #1 receiver just hitting his prime work for the texans?????

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Scotty Miller is not a #1 receiver anywhere…….he’s solid #3 everywhere…..and Tyler Johnson is likely a # 3 some places.

    Truth be told…..we don’t have a #2 receiver on the team….We have 3 #1s.

  11. Steven007 Says:

@Mr Rhodes, Dawsey is a good comp But Dawsey with legitimate speed…

  12. Joe in Michigan Says:

Antonio Brown is not a “cancer” (so far)? Morgus The Mediocre isn’t always right (so far)?

  13. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Steven007 right on…dawsey couldnt run like CG does

  14. Leighroy Says:

So if AB says he still needs time to gel with Brady it’s a throw-away line in a post, but if Moose Johnston on the broadcast says so then it’s an outrage in the morning cup of Joe.

More JBF inconsistencies… wind must have changed direction again in buccaneer cove!

  15. Jersey buc Says:

Well got to imagine Ramsey is going to completely take one of these guys out. The other 2 need to step up and I believe they will.
    Stack em up

  16. iamrhenry Says:

Dusty if you remember L. Dawsey you should remember Gerald Carter. Carter was super reliable and caught just about everything thrown his way.

  17. Brandon Jeff Says:

With three legit number ones, it’s going to be interesting every week to see who teams decide to cover with their number one corner.
I bet DC‘s lose a lot of sleep at night trying to decide which one to cover this week.

  18. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

iamrhenry…..hahahah…the good ol days…yes on Gerald Carter; godwin just seems like a throwback to catching everything in traffic and holding on to the football; AB is tough as nails too and catches everything but Godwin just seems like an old time buc

  19. Rod Munch Says:

As for the top 3 WRs ever, the Bucs are up there. Likely the Moss, Chris Carter, whoever was 3rd that particular year Vikings combo might be better, just because I think Moss is easily the best WR ever, and Carter was still performing at a high level. They generally had a very good 3rd WR like Jake Reed who could also start. I’d give them an edge over the Bucs, but barely, and solely based on my high opinion of Moss since the Bucs trio is better than Carter and Reed.

Other than them, I don’t think there is any other trio that would compete – at least from the mid-80s forward.

As for Scotty Miller – he had a chance, twice, to be a starting WR for the Bucs, and he failed miserably both times – against the Giants and the Bears, he was awful in those games. The guy is a good #4 WR, a borderline #3 WR. That’s why having Brown is so big, when you have injuries to Evans and Godwin, both have been plagued by injuries since late last year, the Bucs have had no other NFL level WRs.

And now ARB is in freaking trouble……….AGAIN!!! CANCER!!!
