“We Got Caught Lacking”
October 15th, 2020Joe reads the texts, the email, the Twitter musings and comments from readers here and senses an uneasiness among Bucs fans.
Joe’s a bit uneasy, too, but it has nothing to do with the Bucs’ 3-2 record and key injuries.
Earlier this week, Jason Pierre Paul talked about how he believes the Bucs gave the Bears last week’s win by beating themselves because their defense got too “comfortable.”
JPP was pressed on whether that meant the Bucs weren’t aggressive enough. JPP replied by saying he would choose different phrasing.
“We got caught lacking, basically. We got caught lacking,” JPP said.
Man, Joe’s been dealing with flatulence issues, sour stomach and 2018 flashbacks ever since JPP said that.
JPP is a thoughtful man who listens well and considers words quite carefully. And Joe was hearing him say he thought the Bucs’ effort was solid but the talent and execution didn’t hold up under pressure. If JPP is right, that really disturbs Joe because it came against a Bears offense that is second rate at best.
The offense the Bucs face next will be much better, as will the one after that in Las Vegas.
Joe will hope that JPP was wrong and the Bucs just got a little soft and tired in the fourth quarter on a short week last Thursday, rather than they weren’t up to stopping the Bears.

“Man, Joe’s been dealing with flatulence issues..” hahahaha! Probably more than your loyal readers wanted to know.
I’m actually encouraged by JPP’s statement. Better to realize now that no matter how good you are on paper, maximum effort has to be given every game or you might fall to a much lesser team. Lesson learned – they are still tied for first early in the season and this lesson will be valuable later in the season with the post season trip possibly on the line.

Playing soft “prevent defense” conceding first downs just because of positioning is very lacking. Get up in their face, make them earn it right from the line of scrimmage. Hey Todd run the ghost of Mike Smith out of the stadium. Todd B is known for pressure, press coverage and blitzing, so please return to that style. BTW the Bucs are a horrible call on Shaq Barrett away from 4-1. GO BUCS!!!!

i agree with the execution part…
we got beat on the wheel route several times….whitehead still struggles in coverage absolutely but outside of that i think the talent is there……..
bears lose came down to too many penalties….undisciplined football….
GO BUCS!!!!!

I could hardly call giving up 6 points in the 2nd half and 7 off a turnover in the first half is lacking….sure, we gave up the winning FG…..but
It was the offense that was lacking…….practically impotent……

The offenses problem was discipline + brain fart, and a certain monster that goes by the name of Mack. GO BUCS!!!

Too much talking. Play the game. It is more important for TB than GB. Just do it.

I think Bowels is one of the best DC and was a blessing to this Bucs defense but he was playing Smitty zone the entire first half creating big yards from short completions. Came back in the second playing man and that didn’t happen. He knows he f#cked up as well and will definitely be learning a lesson upon himself.

Same old story. When will they learn? Only half of a football team shows up at any given time. Sometimes offense, sometimes defense. Yes there were some bad calls by officials. As a team you must overcome and not make things harder on yourself. Dumb play calling, silly penalties. They should have the second half of the Chicago game playing on a loop on every tv at the team facility as a reminder of what terrible football looks like. Yes we are on to Green Bay. But from experience this team refuses to play consistent for 4 quarters. When will they learn? Can they be motivated to play one hour of solid football a week?

Coach after coach. Qb after qb. Same problems. The culture at One Buc is lazy and quick to quit and it’s been that way consistently since 2011.

Thank you TBBF, I was thinking exactly the same thing. Defense didn’t shine by any means, but they only gave up 20 points on the night, and 7 came off the TO on a short field after Vaughn’s fumble. That change of momentum was huge IMO.
The Bucs’ defense effectively shut down the Bears run game (14 runs for only 35 yds) AND the deep pass (1-for-9 for 24 yds), BUT … we did concede the short pass, and that proved to be fatal IMO. We let Foles go 85% in the short passing game, and you just can’t do that. Hard to understand, because it looks like the Bucs only blitzed 14 times in 63 defensive snaps (only 8 of those by White & David). So our LBs were ‘staying home’ & we still let Foles complete almost all of his short passes? Doesn’t make sense.

The coaching staff and players currently do not have a championship pedigree.

Defensively the pressure was still there but they laid off the coverage Mike Smith style in the second half. Offensively they are trying to press the pedal and it backfires. We score early with spreading and mixing the plays. In the last 2 games we have had Brady trying to force the deep ball without an outlet option when we are in the lead. That causes us to lose momentum and the offense goes 3 and out for much of the second half. Then those damned penalties put us in the hole.

This always makes me shake my head in utter disgust. “Caught lacking?” Are you kidding me? Multimillion dollar players not giving maximum effort. You “work” 20 weeks out of 52 get paid a king’s ransom then slack. Utterly amazing! And, some wonder why I suggest this will be an 8-8 season. They don’t have the will to win. Plain and simple.
