Character And The Bucs

October 5th, 2020

“Wish you could sit here with me Tom but I ran out of your witches brew.”

Last night on the Buccaneers Radio Network coach Bucco Bruce Arians saluted his team’s “character” for not throwing in the towel yesterday when it would have been easy to do so, and to claw back for a big win at home.

The way Arians spoke today, an example of that character may be in a guy who caught his first NFL touchdown yesterday. That would be rookie running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn.

Vaughn, right at the start of training camp, found himself on the COVID list. So he had a late start to training camp. Then he was dinged up.

Arians said Vaughn never let that get to him and instead busted his tail, which showed why he looked so smooth yesterday.

“He got a bunch of scout team reps and got better,” Arians explained of Vaughn. “A lot of guys would go down and pout, but he’s kept his head up [and] he’s worked extremely hard catching the ball [and] running the ball.

“I told him a couple of weeks ago – ‘Your time’s going to come, and when it does it’s going to be really, really important.’ We trust him. … “We have all the trust in the world in Ke’Shawn.”

Joe can only guess that this “character” Arians speaks of is rubbing off from park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring Bucs quarterback Tom Brady.

Big comeback wins for Brady are nothing new. For Bucs fans, they’ve heard rumors of such things, but they are so rare at the Den of Depression it’s like a blue moon — appearing once every few years.

It’s about time players actually earn their reps around here. Idc what round they were drafted, nice work BA.

  2. HeyItsAdam Says:

This is one of those games that, in the past, de-railed any sign of growth the Bucs exhibited. They would win 2-3 games in a row and then start looking like a team on the verge of breaking out, then they drop a stinker to some has-been or a rookie 3rd stringer getting his first start in Week 6.

  3. Casual Observer Says:

Good story. Lots to like about Vaughn.

  4. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Finally the team showed some grit. BA is right when he said last year’s team would have lost by 20, most likely cuz JW would have thrown at least 2 more picks to kill any comeback. Also clutch play by Suh before the half. Never saw GMC do that in 10 years. sad about O.J. Howard but he’s a potato chip.

  5. Buc1987 Says:

Imagine sitting there as a fan in the Den of Depression yesterday down 24-7.

    Same old Bucs?

Nope. Those fans got to enjoy a good one for once.

    Well deserved too!

    Go Bucs!!

  6. 813bucboi Says:

lets continue to build off each win….

    ON TO CHI!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m expecting our Defense to annihilate the Bears……

  8. Casual Observer Says:

TBBfan- Wouldn’t be surprised. The Chi QB isn’t as good as Herbert – who was amazing.

  9. Bucsfanman Says:

    Buc1987- Amen brother!

  10. Darin Says:

There’s actually a blue moon this month. On Halloween. Go Bucs

  11. ElioT Says:

    @‘87 – well said.

Our fans base in not unlike most others, with the exception of absurd long periods of futility and frustration.

Real Bucs fans… you just can’t root for any other team.

Very well deserved win for the team and the real fans, especially those who commit a lot of money and time to actually attend the home games.

  12. Steven007 Says:

1987, I was there. It was fun. Me and my buddies even made the front page of the Times this morning!

  13. Smashsquatch Says:

Vaughn is a sleeper. He balled out against stiff SEC competition at Vandy, and the opposition knew he was getting the ball. Can’t wait to see what he does with more reps.

  14. ElioT Says:

    With all that said…

It’s on to Chicago, let’s go eat the bear boys!!!

3-1 is great, 4-1 is more better.

    Cheers boys! Go Bucs!!!

  15. ElioT Says:

    @Steven007

Good for you sir. We salute you!

  16. Mike Says:

Vaughn looked very much like a pass catching NE style back. If he can block, I see a lot more opportunities coming his way.

  17. Steven007 Says:

EllioT it was a lot of fun being there to witness it, even with the extremely small crowd. The pic in the paper was the icing on the cake. Obviously we had no idea about that until people started telling us and they saw us on the front page of the paper.

  18. Big Stinky Says:

What an awesome catch by Vaughn on 3rd and goal for the TD! Don’t think Rojo would have caught that ball.

unfortunately, rojo cant catch covid if you blow it in his face….

    BL IS WORKING MAGIC!!!!!!!

BL keeps this up, he’ll be a HC next year…im hoping with the BUCS!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!
    ***************************************************************

texans just fired bill o’brien…..their coaching search has begun…..

will the glazers move on from BA and promote BL in fear of losing him like they did dirk?….they should…

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  20. bojim Says:

Gonna be our 3rd down back. I like it.

  21. Cobraboy Says:

Bowles will be HC before Leftwich. BL needs more grooming.

  22. SB Says:

Our Previous QB had 9 tds and 5 INTs at this time last yr and our record was 2 and 2. Then we went on to lose the next 4 consecutive games!!!
Our current QB has 11 TDs and 4 INTs in the same time span and our record is 3 and 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone even want to lay a sheckle down that we will lose the next 4 games str8?

    Didn’t think so.

LOVING THE QB DOWN GRADE IDIOTS!!!!!!!

  23. Bird Says:

This next game will show some character and where this team may or may not be.

I checked Chicago’s stats and their D is still real good

In 4 games only Matt stAfford threw for more then 250 yards .
Zero teams have thrown for 300

It appears teams can run on them as most all teams ran over 100 yards

    —-

They should have lost to falcons Though
And foles probably will start and we have done well against him in years past

    -///

We need godwin back. Dont need to see watson anymore.
You know king kong Evans will play.
Lets see what brady can do. Spread them out like last week and let him do his thing. Got to be careful with play action on that bears dline.

  24. Bird Says:

    Just read about tristan wirfs

The guy you dont hear about which is a good thing cause he plays Oline
He has given up zero sacks in 4 games
Look who he has played against too:

    Cam jordan
    Joey bosa
    Bradley chubb
    Brian burns

You could say he has played against better competition then smith at left tackle

First 2 rounds , we hit a home run. Character guys you wont have to worry about getting in trouble Ever

  25. Defense Rules Says:

@Cobraboy … “Bowles will be HC before Leftwich. BL needs more grooming.” You beat me to it Cobraboy. Several JBFers seem to think BL is the 2nd coming of (Pick a great offensive mind), but he’s not even close. While working with an ‘average QB’ (Arizona 2018), he didn’t exactly light up the NFL. Now, give him Brady as a QB & a stacked offense to go with it, and he SHOULD be able to find a way to get points on the board. Still not impressed. (OK, the door’s opened; hop in bucboi).

BTW Cobraboy, I wonder what our record would be right now if it wasn’t for having Todd Bowles as our DC. I’m still convinced that it was HIM who hand-picked this defensive roster. Virtually all of them fit perfectly into the defensive scheme that’s he’s created. Also wonder how much of this coaching staff will remain WHEN he takes over as our next HC. My hunch is most if not all of it.

  26. Ed Says:

No one has said anything about the pick six’s that he has thrown.

  27. SlyPirate541 Says:

Question: If Rojo, Fournette, and Shady suit up Thursday is Vaughn on the active roster? Does he play ST?

  28. SB Says:

He has thrown two pick sixes in a brand new offense with WRs he isn’t used to yet.
Difference between him and our previous QB is that he has found a way to WIN despite those two gaffes!
First one prolly wasn’t on him. Yesterday was totally on him.
Doesn’t matter. He threw 4 TDs after that to 4 different WRs to Win The Game!!!!

  29. SB Says:

Joe………..Please do something about Every one of my comments going into M o d mode.
I don’t mind it once in a while if I say something questionable but I can’t even type “test” without going in the corner

  30. AKicknTheBucNuts Says:

I hope we get to “5 Dash 2” and then have the character to go even further to “You ever beeen 8 and 2?”

  31. Mitch Says:

I think this is the first or second 8+ point comeback the Bucs have had since 2016. All 29 other times the Bucs were down by 8 or more in game they lost. Feels good to have a legitimate quarterback. Even if it’s just for a year or two. His impact on the roster and the attitude is something a Tampa QB has never had before.

  32. mark2001 Says:

BL is doing fine in consultation with Arians and Brady. Bowles has the D on his shoulders and is doing a fine job. Is either of them HC material? Possibly, but I don’t know. Marinelli was a great line coach. But as a HC? Total failure. I don’t think Monte would have been a good HC either. It is a different skill set.

  33. Joe Says:

Please do something about Every one of my comments going into M o d mode.

What would you suggest? You think you Joe enjoys constantly having to dig them out of moderation?

Not sure why the spam filter is dinging your comments. Unfortunately software doesn’t communicate with humans. Sadly Joe does not write code.

Please know this is not some personal attack on you.

  34. Bellingham Bucs Fan Says:

    Ed,

You’re correct. No one cares about the pick 6’s because the GOAT wins games.

  35. David Says:

He looked great! Shifty, explosive, good hands.
It is so refreshing that they have a running game again. Ronald Jones looks like what we expected after he was drafted, Fournette looks great, the line is going to get better and better at run blocking because most of them are better run blockers than they are at pass protection. On top of that other teams can’t load the box up when they have Brady standing there.

  36. Steven007 Says:

Michael Clayton actually had an interesting observation about the routes our receivers run versus what TB is used to. Clayton is convinced that all Pat’s receivers run routes with a bit of wiggle in them. On and out rout e, which both pick sixes were, Watson just ran them straight and never gained the appropriate separation. Not sure if TB thought the pass was outside enough But it’s likely we don’t see that same pass, two Watson at least, for a while.

  37. David Says:

    Ed-
It’s a new offense with a bunch of new players. It is obvious to anyone with an eye for football, that they are getting used to each other and getting better and better.
The ints will go away. That interception was a bad throw and a bad route.
But overall he threw 5 touchdowns. I’ll take a pick six every single game if it comes with five touchdowns.

The other reason it’s not being mentioned is because it is Tom Brady. He has a long history and we know what he’s going to do. If we are supposed to bring up Jameis Winston in this conversation, I am 90% sure he would’ve thrown another pick six in the last five minutes of the game to lose it. That’s not a knock on Jameis, it’s just a fact on what he brought to the table. For every touchdown he threw, he threw .75 interceptions. That doesn’t count his fumbles either.

So the bottom line is, no one’s talking about it because with Brady it’s not a pattern. It’s not a problem. It’s never been an issue. And the offense is getting better and better and more comfortable.

  38. Oneilbucs Says:

DAVID don’t bring up Jamies 75 interceptions because Payton Manning had a 100 and that’s not counting his fumbles and they still kept him on the team . And no one said move on from Payton Manning . Instead they made excuses for him even though he had a hall of fame runningback. I’m enjoying this season but what’s going to happen when Brady leaves ? I like Rosen a lot but if they don’t keep this type of offense short passes and a running game he will struggle. I hope as a fan base we learn that a Bruce Arians type of offense is a bad offense . I hope yall learn that a running game is and a good defense helps a quarterback be successful.

  39. JimmyJack Says:

Ugggh Oniel. Thats a terrible take. This offense is a bad offense? You gotta be tapped in the head. Look at how much points we put up. Last year top 5 i think. Same pace this year. And I dont think our scoring is going nowhere.

Now go look at our redzone numbers. Weve been one of the best teams in that area in the past year…..Yes we did struggle to start ladt year. Think you could fairly say that was part of the learning curve.

I guess points just arent important to some fans. I just dont know how you call ot bad offense. A take that bad certainly cant be based on anything real.

  40. Nolesman Says:

Slow your roll on BL being HC material. If you count the amount of times Brady checks out of the play call you could actually say that our QB is doing a better job of calling plays than our OC

  41. Youngbucs Says:

Oneilbucs throwing excessive ints in today’s nfl don’t fly take that bull back to Twitter

  42. Youngbucs Says:

I hope as a fan base some stop making excuses for a loser

  43. Youngbucs Says:

I swear I can’t wait till winston get on the field again he gonna sink or swim. I’m so tired of hearing excuses for him. But know this no other team is going to allow him the rope the Bucs did. He’s on thin ice

  44. Cobraboy Says:

@DR: I suspect almost all the current staff, including Leftwich, would stay.

But I am not shovelinbg dirt on BA’s grave. IMO, he is the best coach the Bucs have had since Gruden—whose firing was a huge mistake.

I suspect, short of the biggest collapse in NFL history, we will have BA swearing on the sidelines for a couple of years…and he will go out on HIS terms.

  45. REDZONE BA Fan Says:

Unrelated to “Character” post – But relevant to Bucs > Watching the GB vs ATL game. 2nd half just starting.

If Birds losing pattern continues, Koetter might be the interim HC by the time we play the dirty Birds. My grandma predicts Koetter plays. Bowles will have so much fun!

  46. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

So is the next game this Thursday?

  47. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Oneilbucs,

The truth is, Winston’s turnovers cost him his job with the Bucs. It doesn’t matter that Peyton had more picks, because he also won a LOT more.

Now, I’m a Winston guy myself, and I do believe he has it in him to be great, but he’s going to have to reduce his turnovers a lot.

Had he signed with another division, I would probably root for him. But he’s the enemy for now.

  48. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

And, btw, BA was not right when he said we would have lost by 20 last year.

Most of our games were come from behind, take the lead, only to have Winston through a pick or the defense lose the lead toward the end…and we lost most games by one score.

  49. REDZONE BA Fan Says:

@Bonzai – Regarding Thur night game. Not too worried about Bear’s Offense v Bucs D. We beat Foles before. K.Mack might be a little hobbled, but he is still a beast. I am worried about Mack having one smashing sack on Brady. Brady is uncanny at sensing pressure, shuffling his feet and dumping the ball. Paint me as a concerned Bucs fan for Brady’s health for this Thur night game.

  50. Buccos Says:

Jamies Winston is a mental midget. Tom Brady is like Beethoven in football. Brady has ice water in his veins. He may have even thrown that pick 6 just to make it interesting. In my opinion Brady could play a few more years and BA could coach until Brady retires. I doubt Arians would keep coaching after Brady. They will be in contention for the Super Bowl until they both step down.

  51. Rod Munch Says:

Vaughn looked like James White – just moved like him, if he gets more playing time I think Brady is going to give him a lot more looks.

But with Ronnie, Fournette and McCoy as the 3rd down back (assuming he’s not getting Brady killed by missing blocks like on Sunday) all ahead of him, it’s likely Vaughn isn’t going to get a lot of playing time anytime soon.

  52. Rod Munch Says:

Joe – what I don’t get about your filters is why saying Justin Watson seems to make things go into moderation. It probably won’t this time, but yesterday every comment was doing that.

  53. Rod Munch Says:

The other thing about Vaughn that was interesting was how small he look when Brady hugged him, he looked like Warrick Dunn doing that Trent Dilfer, he looked tiny. He’s listed at 5′ 10″ 220lbs, but he sure didn’t look that big.

  54. REDZONE BA Fan Says:

@Rod – McCoy might be inactive before game 8. Dude has lost his mojo. Rojo is BA’s favorite for now, until he fumbles during a key snap or bumbles another pass during a screen play. Fournette will be the horse by end of season.

  55. gp Says:

What’s the difference between losing by 20 or losing by 2?

    ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

    You lost!

  56. Joe Says:

Joe – what I don’t get about your filters is why saying Justin Watson seems to make things go into moderation.

LOL No clue! But that is hilarious!!! 🙂

  57. Joe Says:

If Birds losing pattern continues, Koetter might be the interim HC by the time we play the dirty Birds.

Don’t think so. Only reason to run Dan Quinn right now is his defense (he’s a defensive guy and it is his team) stinks.

Koetter sure as hell won’t fix it. We know that for a fact.

  58. ElioT Says:

    @ Rod Munch

As much as we have disagreed on some topics in the past, I totally appreciate and respect your observation of Vaughn and the comparison to White.

I think you nailed it… honestly.

    Cheers to you and yours.

    Go Bucs!!!!

  59. SOEbuc Says:

Need to sign Antonio Brown like right now. Says he’ll play for dirt poor and wants to cut the locker room BS. Tom and BA will put you on the street bringing that in. Entire receiving corp other than Brate and Gronk don’t seem to be 100%. Not saying AB could immediately be amazing after a year off and then serving 4 game suspension, but could be very dangerous weapon if all our WR get healthier down the stretch.

  60. View from 132 Says:

Anyone else get a laugh out of having a Keyshawn on offense again?
