“Winston-like”

September 14th, 2020

Sad Bucs debut.

One national NFL columnist, while watching the Bucs fall to the Saints, said he believes he knows the core reason why the Bucs struggled yesterday.

The Bucs, writes Vinnie Iyer of The Sporting News, jumped through hoops to get park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring Tom Brady to be better than Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston. Not to play like Jameis Winston.

The bottom line, however, is Brady didn’t play close to his lofty standards in his first game as a 43-year old, confirmed by his 6.1 yards per attempt on top of the big game-changing mistakes. He also took three sacks while doing his best to try to get the ball out quickly as he usually does.

The Bucs signed Brady to replace Jameis Winston because Winston threw a league-high 30 interceptions last season, keeping them from being better than a 7-9 team. Considering that, it was an inauspicious start.

The Bucs lost twice to the Saints last season by similar scores, 31-24 and 31-17. Brady was supposed to make them challenge the Saints in the division, not produce a Winston-like result while Winston served as a backup on the other sideline.

Joe has no doubt Brady will get better. Why he had issues yesterday isn’t fully clear.

Just as Brady played like Jameis yesterday, Bucs running backs, well, ran like Bucs running backs of the recent pass — dreary.

That certainly didn’t help Brady.

If Brady cannot improve with all of these weapons the Bucs have, would it be fair to say that maybe all these weapons the Bucs have (sans Mike Evans and Chris Godwin) are just overrated?

    #WhenBradyBecameJameisInTheBigBayou

when brady threw the pick 6, the cameras should have cut right to jameis to see his face…lol

the first couple games are sorta like preseason, work the kinks out type stuff…

especially if you happen to be a revamped team such as ours…

the saints brought back most guys, so getting familiarity isn’t as needed…

    don’t get so down people…

the bucs might just improve in every game moving forward to the point of being a juggernaut by season end

  2. Fan from Above Says:

Donovan smith was awful yesterday. He was getting embarrassed by the saints 3rd and 4th stringers. If we want to win, he’s got to go.

  3. BucEmUp Says:

no creativity on offense, nothing fancy, jompre snap motions, wrong routes, late throws, throws into tight coverage, defense didnt start blitzing until they thought the gake was lost. Just crap all the way around. Over Leftwich is the problem nobody wants to identify juat like Mike Smith

  4. Onetrickpony Says:

You said we have running backs?
    Where ?

Brady is the GOAT for a reason, the ship will righted. Fire the cannons. GO BUCS!!!

  6. Bucsfanman Says:

You had to know it was coming after the pick-6!
“See, should’ve kept…” blah, blah, blah.

Brady had a bad game. Unlike the comparison, I do NOT expect Brady to have many games like this one.

  7. BigHog Says:

Well I’m guessing that the YOU PEOPLE MOVEMENT are still figuring out if they want to get up for work and face the carnage that is the BUCS!!’ As a team we looked weak and out of place…there was no fight back …
The one and only reason they didn’t show Mr 5000 at the moment of that pick six…it’s a systemic type thing!!!….but why turn to Mr 5000, turn to the guys that were so frustrated with Jamis last season…be careful what you ask for! I smell that bone on rib on bacon frying!!! HENNY. AND HOG…get yo-self some!!!

  9. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

    Some positives from the game:
    * Miller, OJ and Wirfs really looked good. We clearly have a strong #3 WR
    * L. David had his usual All Pro game, and I thought D White played well, Davis and SMB obviously did a great job, and Winfield shinned for a pure rookie.
    * The Bucs D played very well most of the game, Camara and Mike Thomas were held in check about as well as anyone could hope for.

The Bad… some things never change.
    * Keystone cops ST, Penalties, TOs, D line bailed out the Saints at key moments,
    * the Bucs ‘vaunted’ front 7 “maybe the best in the NFL” = ONE sack, the Saints tripled that.,
    * D. “Sloth” was in his usual form, allowing Cam Jordan to feast.
    * What happened to Brady making a read at the line and dissecting the D?
These things are not a talent issue, they are coaching related.

Side note: I am starting to questions Joe’s opinion of our Oline. Fournette 2019 with a BAD Jags Oline had 4.3ypc, against the Saints 1.0 ypc

  10. dmatt Says:

Brady is pissed off. Watch n see, he will return with a vengeance n BA won’t forget SPayton trying to run the score up on them when the game was obviously win by Saints. Give the DB’s credit they played well holding Brees to only 160 yards. We can’t continue to have DSmith play the way he did yesterday. Brady is the GOAT is a leader n winner, this too shall pass because the GOAT will learn from n overcome his mistakes. He’ll corral the team n dictate to those slackers on offense. This is far from over.

  11. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

“…If Brady cannot improve with all of these weapons the Bucs have, would it be fair to say that maybe all these weapons the Bucs have (sans Mike Evans and Chris Godwin) are just overrated?”.

    Or, maybe under coached?

  12. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Agree about the OFFENSIVE Line. It is the ONLY common denominator left.

  13. D-Rome Says:

Brady didn’t have a very good game but I consistently saw Brady make throws that Jay-Miss could never make.

  14. Chris Says:

I wouldn’t say Godwin is overrated. Evans? Yes. His talent is definitely there but I question his football IQ. That first pick Brady read cover two and he should t have stopped his route.

  15. Kelvin Daniel Sanchez Linares Says:

If we only had a QB…
All we need is a better QB play…
We will win the day our QB stops throwing the ball to the opposite team…
Oh, wait, we got Brady and this stinks like it never changed?

  16. BringBucsBack Says:

We don’t know how it will turn out; it is still early! Panic in week four, if it doesn’t improve.

By comparison, in his first game in Arians’ offense last year, with an off-season, pre-season, against an inferior defense (Saints D is greatly underrated & 49ers were not thought of as SB contenders by game one last year), and at home, Jameis threw 3 picks (had 2 more dropped) & 2 pick sixes.

Everyone chill, especially the Jameis boyfriends!

  17. ClodHopper Says:

It’s like it takes time for a qb to learn what throws not to throw in Arians offense. Brady will figure it out in a few games. Jameis never did

  18. BigHog Says:

The GOAT is ready to be chopped up and made into a big pot of curry goat!!!

  19. Pewter Power Says:

Just give the Saints credit, he likes to get the ball out Quick and couldn’t, Saints have been practicing against that since Brees got there. Only thing they could do is throw deep everything else was covered up. Damn it’s crazy Brady can’t get more than 4 quarters before bringing up Winston who after a full year was still throwing picks like crazy and over performing against mediocre teams like Jacksonville and Detroit.

Bet Brady won’t play like Winston did in London. No quarterback in the nfl will look that bad

  20. Bobby M. Says:

In a “normal” season that includes some preseason, weeks 1-3 are still where teams are working out the wrinkles. I’ve always felt the first few weeks are where the biggest upsets get pulled off yet have little relevance for the remainder of the season. Game speed chemistry and understanding of the offense cant be replicated at practice because you’re still in a controlled environment. Its like comparing jiu jitsu classes to street fighting…..two totally different situations. We got our first look at game speed against an excellent team, now we go clean things up, make adjustments, get ready for the Panthers. Home games within the division are must win, its a good way to bounce back from a division loss.

no creativity on offense, nothing fancy
If you CANNOT RUN THE FOOTBALL… you can’t do anything! Your fancy play calling goes out the window
There should be a JBF JV …. comment section!

  22. Formerly Tampa 2 Says:

I think the defense played pretty good except for a few off sides & Dean. And the offense was just what you would expect for never having time to jell. While I didn’t expect them to win against the Saints, I certainly think they will jell within the next 2 games.

  23. Kobe Faker Says:

“If you swap only Sean Peyton with BA/BL twins

Peyton would win with the Bucs with the exact same personnel

Arians schemes is outdated and doesnt work in the modern NFL. This is a copycat league, if Arians scheme was successful, why are the Bucs the only team playing this scheme and playcalling

Constant interceptions and creating QB injuries”

    Kobe Faker

  24. JayWill Says:

Funny seeing people say Jameis didn’t figure out the offense when he threw 5100 yards and 33tds the most for a qb in year one of a Bruce Arians offense . The problem last year was the wrs figuring out how to read coverages on the go and penalties.

  25. JayWill Says:

Sean Payton won with a qb that couldn’t throw past 10 yards most of the game. Its clear the defense benefited from Brees lack of arm strength because guys were getting open down field Brees didn’t pull the trigger.

  26. iamrhenry Says:

    Two things:

As soon as I saw ME13 pointing to the refs and whining like a little b**ch, I knew he was being taken to the wood shed and it was going to be a long day.

Donny “boy” Smith never seems motivated. Maybe its time to send him home so he can stay safe and play with his money. Praying he doesn’t contaminate are man beast rookie tackle.

On the bright side, at this point, at least the Bucs are in the “Tank for Trevor” sweepstakes.

  27. stpetebucsfan Says:

The defense played well. The front seven was studly and SMB..Davis and Winfield got his fingertips on a ball in the end zone and demonstrated his tackling skill.

And the young DB’s can still grow.

The rest was BAD. ALL of it. Brady…the coaches…the OL…the RB’s..even the targets were mediocre at their best and awful at their worst.

Special teams are as usual an abomination…ten points for the Saints.

Soooo….it was the first game…Fournette has been in camp a week…ROJO ran for just under 4 ypc against a very tough defense…Brady and the receivers will get on the same page and the OL will get straightened out. In the OL room they should be playing tape of DS’s blown assignments over and over again until he’s humbled to the core in front of his peers.

Bottom line for me…I’m far from panicked. My major concern at this point is the special teams. They contributed as much as any other group to our loss yesterday and I’m not sure how they get better. At least Succup didn’t blow big chunks but his ST coach did…a blocked kick? C’mon man! The keystone cops handling of that short kick…again C’MON MAN!!! That eliminated any chance we might have had.

Get on the same page and somehow find a way to fix ST’s and we can beat them next time. I’m beginning to wonder if Keith Armstrong is the guy for the job? Hard to believe he was considered for the Bears and Eagles HC positions according to NFL.com

  28. Oneilbucs Says:

Brady will not be hear next year he’s don’t after this year . I thought Jamies was the problem . All yall will be killing Jamies and the lost would have been all on Jamies . I told all yall that the past 2 years Brady have not been good .

  29. 1_Buc Says:

Well like I said no excuses. This week take a few weeks to get the offense going. It was clear as day that the plays were scripted to what plays were the same to New England plays on yesterday. Outside the opening drive offense didn’t look good. With all those weapons why are they trying to dink and donk. Both QBs looked like they were over 40. I really didn’t like the fact that Gronk wasn’t targeted much. As for now I think it will a week by week basis for the offense trying to figure out their identity if they are balance or if they are explosive. As for Brady making throws that Jamies couldn’t make as someone posted what throws are you talking about? They both clearly can’t throw a deep out to Justin Watson without it being a Pick 6. Every time he has been targeted on a deep out route the result is the same an Int or Pick 6. Thats one of two things IMO which is he runs a terrible route or the QB can’t make the throw.

  30. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I have a very very negative friend who thinks THE Problem is Arians Offense!
He thinks it is an Interception Offense waiting to happen.
He pointed out that even Tom Brady threw a couple of interceptions, and to be honest, he even predicted it!

  31. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Final two thoughts from me.

    IT WAS ONE GAME!

    IT WAS THE FIRST GAME!

  32. Nathaniel D Ford Says:

Did you see Mike Evans body language he was not happy with Brady not targeting him the way Jameis Did,
This is going to end very bad in Tampa for Brady and the Bucs because 43 years old is a real problem for a quarterback with no mobility and a Swiss cheese offensive line!!!!!!

  33. Sesteprenelicus Says:

It really wasn’t like the Bucs got killed yesterday… 4 bonehead plays did them in:
Mike Evans running the wrong route that led to the 1st INT
    Tom Brady throwing the pick-6
Whatshisname DB asleep on the job allowing the huge deep strike for NO
    The creamsiclesque kickoff return muff

  34. Oneilbucs Says:

Brady is to old man we are going to win some games this year . But it will not be a next year for Brady .

  35. TJ Says:

Reading all of the Jameis-haters tap-dance, shuffle & kowtow with excuse after excuse is just pure reading GOLD!! I mean, that Jenkins pick-6 was absolutely PRICELESS…I’ve not laughed this hard since the Indy-Dungy-happy birthday-revenge game!! Now y’all jus keep y’all heads up der in da sky, Hullsburah Kownah, ya hear?!! Da’ Gayote is gonna git er’ done sooner er’ laterrr!

  36. Va buc Says:

    Yyou a goofy joe

  37. January1979 Says:

Overreaction Monday. I’ll be pissed if the mistakes and turnovers continue, but for the first couple weeks this should be expected. Saints made fewer mistakes, simple as that. Our defense overall played very well and when our offense was in sync, they looked unstoppable-see the first drive and the scoring drive in the third quarter.

  38. Chris Boyd Says:

seems like every saints game, they get a pick six by them jumping that out route. there had to be something that teams see on tape that tells that route, it gets jumped all the time. granted, the throw was about 3 yards off, but that route gets housed for the defense all the time. leftwich needs to remove that call/concept from the playbook

  39. Eric Says:

Poor Jameis let the man alone the common denominator is that use car salesman head coach we have!!

  40. 813bucboi Says:

Lot of cleaning up to do….but a lot of positives….

    GO BUCS

  41. Bucy Says:

Better check yo sheet he is the goat 🐐 not aimless jameis.

  42. hammerhead Says:

First game in a new offense, new teammates. No reason to think he won’t improve rapidly. No reason to worry.

  43. Oneilbucs Says:

Hammerhead It was Jamies first time in the offense but all yall still blame Jamies . So no excuses !!!

  44. LakelandSteve Says:

I have two words for you. Offensive Line! Not in a good way. We couldn’t run well because our offensive line didn’t block well. Brady didn’t have a great game , but the offensive line (namely Donovan Smith) player poorly. Brady needs a clean pocket. Smith was getting beat by backups. The other issue I saw was there weren’t many open receivers. Our defense played great with the exception of the stupid offside penalties and Dean falling asleep during crunch time and getting beat deep. I don’t know what Arians and our illustrious GM can do but they better do something to shore up Brady’s blindside or he won’t last a complete season

  45. hammerhead Says:

Whoa, settle down there! Somebody still triggered about Jameis? We’re talking about Tom Brady, not JW.

  46. SufferingSince76 Says:

I’ll bite. It was Jameis’ fault. If he had been a better quarterback he would still be here. That doesn’t mean the result would have necessarily been different.

  47. VaBucsfan Says:

I just don’t understand how you get an encroachment penalty on 4 and 2 coming out of a time out. That just can’t happen for any reason. The Saints are just a better team at this point in time and that showed on Sunday. Tough week 1 match up but all is not lost. The week 2 match up against Carolina is now a must win. Here is my 2 cents and takeaways as the Bucs move forward.

    1. The Bucs have to run the ball more effectively
    2. The Bucs must provide Tom Brady with a cleaner pocket
    3. The Bucs have to protect the football and avoid turnovers
    4. The Bucs must stop committing penalties
    5. The Bucs have to improve significantly on special teams

The Bucs coaching staff has to figure out a way to get these things accomplished with consistency as the season moves forward if they are to make a playoff run. Running out of excuses. Go Bucs!!!

  48. The Saint Says:

Look forward to spanking Tom cryBrady’s diaper swaddled ass twice a year

  49. SlyPirate541 Says:

There is obviously a big difference between real games and practice. This game will help the team prepare and I expect a vastly improved offense next game.

  50. Cgmaster27 Says:

@the saint you also looking forward to another one and done in the playoffs?

  51. Oneilbucs Says:

Where is Youngbucs now will you believe me that if you can’t run the ball your chances of winning is lim !!! I told you that Brady is old and teams are going to play us like Titans played Brady last year .

  52. Eric Says:

If they lose to the panthers it’s over.

  53. CalBucsFan Says:

It’s a shame that what was really the first pre-season game was broadcast nationally and it matched the Bucs to the division’s best team. Nice how NE got Miami for Cam Newton’s debut, isn’t it?

No matter, I expected them to lose and would have of course been pleasantly surprised if they had won. Now the team played a real game, real opponent opponent with game-day speed and hits. Lot’s go game tape to work. We should see lot’s of improvement by next Sunday.

  54. MTM Says:

There are a lot of new pieces added on the offense and the Covid BS hindered them from being cohesive. It will get better as the season goes on. The offensive play calling was vanilla at best.

  55. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Winfield is a star in the making at safety , his read and react is spot on. Terrible how the TB12NutHuggers cannot even hear it when BA says both picks were on him-SO STOP BLAMING EVANS MORONS.

  56. Chris Boyd Says:

bright side… defense looks really good! other than that one jamel dean gaffe, we were smothering one of the better receiving corps in the league

  57. Arians Is Over-Rated Says:

    Arians is overrated!!!

  58. Arians Is Over-Rated Says:

TB12 must stand for turnovers baby! #WhiteWinston.

  59. YAT Says:

    SMFH….@Joe… Chill out

  60. Anonymous Says:

Fact of the matter is Jameis had no running game, nor all those weapons and the defense didn’t start clicking til the end of the season….but facts doesn’t matter….just rewrite history…to protect the G.O.A.T. and Buc officials

  61. Allbuccedup Says:

TB 12 one and done. 2021 Winston back with a team friendly contract. HAHAHA.

  62. JameisAlmighty Says:

    Jameis > Brady
Another example of Licht making poor personnel decisions. Hopefully Brady retires after next week and the Bucs trade back for Famous Jameis.

  63. DalvinCookRules Says:

Defenses are ready for EVERYTHING we do.

There is only ONE logical explanation for that. This is the problem with old coaches, they are reluctant to change–and a CHANGE at OC is the only thing that will save this team.

  64. Tc Says:

Brady downright sucked yesterday. He now owns something Jameis doesn’t a pick 6 in 3 straight games!

  65. 407buc Says:

Brady has now thrown a pic 6 in his last 3 games

  66. Hopalong Bucco Says:

One game, no pre season games, and y’all act like it’s the end of the world. C,mon man! The Bucs will be what we hoped for 2 weeks ago, if Donovan wakes the F up and blocks somebody.

  67. Owlykat Says:

Everybody keeps blaming Dean, when the fricking Safety bit on the play and left his post open. It just was not Dean’s fault and BA has already explained that!

  68. Owlykat Says:

Our Defense played well enough to win that game!
