“That Was A 7-9 Team I Saw Out There”

September 26th, 2020

Former Bucs G Ian Beckles.

If the Bucs have true, real goals of making it the Super Bowl, a former Bucs starter said their play in the win against Carolina won’t cut it.

Former Bucs guard and current popular sports radio personality Ian Beckles took to his podcast “In the Trenches” this week to spank the Bucs around a little.

Basically, Beckles said if people are content with how the Bucs played last weekend just because it was a win, brace yourself for another losing season.

“For a team that has Super Bowl aspirations, that was a 7-9 team I saw out there,” Beckles said. “That’s not bad, you won a football game. I’m not complaining. But *that* won’t get it done. That’s not consistent enough football to beat the Saints [and] maybe not to beat the Falcons, who like to give away games.

“That’s not good enough.”

For everything Beckles saw that he liked, it was buried in equal if not more amounts of bad.

“Tom Brady was up and down,” Beckles said. “Some of it wasn’t pretty. Some of it was gorgeous, OK? That’s part of it. As a whole, offensively, defensively, it’s not good enough. It’s not. We’re talking a Super Bowl people.”

On defense, Beckles thought the Bucs just played “OK.” He doesn’t seem to be chugging the Kool-Aid just yet that the Bucs have a superior defense.

“Defensively, we gave up a lot of booty to a team that is not very good,” Beckles said. Carolina is “not a very good football team. No one expects Carolina to win more than five games this year. I don’t. … Just off-looking football.”

Beckles had other observations:

* On Ronald Jones: “I am seeing spurts of greatness. … (The stiff-arm on a touchdown run) that was nice.”

* On Leonard Fournette: “Fournette had a couple nice big runs. As a whole, we need to start running the ball more efficiently. Too many plays for lost yardage. Too many one-yard runs.”

* On a long drive by Carolina in the second half: “If you are a great defense, get your @ss off the field.”

* On Donovan Smith: “Last week people were asking [on Beckles’ local radio show] for him to be cut and benched. I think he had one holding call [Sunday]. Other than that I really didn’t hear his name much, which is good.”

* On Tristan Wirfs: “I really haven’t heard his name called much all season. Barely. Believe me, if you are a rookie offensive lineman, and we are not hearing his name, those are good things. Those are real, real good things.”

* On Mike Evans: “I thought played well. He’s not a burner by any means. He gets out there and he makes plays when he has to.”

* On foot-rubbing Rob Gronkowski: “Hhhmmm. OK, you’re blocking. But I don’t think Tom Brady went and got Rob Gronkowski out of retirement to block. I don’t think. But it doesn’t look right.”

* On O.J. Howard: “One catch for 11 yards. You know, in a game like that I expect O.J. Howard to catch five or six balls. That’s just me. … You need more [production] than from trick plays. You need more than that.”

* On Cam Brate: “I’ve been screaming for him to get traded for years. You know what we would have missed? ‘Squa-dooch.’ I don’t know if he played. I’m not even going to look. I don’t care. He don’t do nothing.”

* On Vita Vea: “Invisible this year. Not good enough. Not good enough.”

* On Shaq Barrett: “A little bit quiet. It’s not for a lack of effort. I’ve been watching him. When you get 19.5 sacks, teams prepare for your @ss. People have been preparing for Shaq Barrett the whole offseason. And they are ready.” Beckles added that Shaq needs to develop a power move. Teams are now hip to his trick moves, Beckles said.

* On Devin White: “He’s a star, alright? He’s everywhere. He’s a star. He’s a fabulous football player. He seems to be a fabulous leader. You can build a defense around Devin White. Period. Love Devin White as a football player.”

* Will Gholston: “He’s old school. He’s grimy. He’s one of the most consistent players we’ve had to this point, but it’s only been two games.”

* On Brady’s pick: “We had a Jameis-like interception again.”

* On Cyril Grayson: “He’s a guy I never heard of before. I don’t know who that is. Had a pass go off his face mask.”

* On Brady’s underthrown flea-flicker: “That’s a tough throw to make when you are trying to find the laces on the fly.”

Overall, Beckles said the second week was an improvement over the first week but not by much. “That’s a 7-9 outing,” Beckles said.

As always, Beckles welcomes feedback and encourages listeners to submit Bucs questions by e-mailing him at IanBeckles@RadioInfluence.com.

I agree, they beat a bad team, they should have throttled the score up but they let a really bad team back in the game. Pure dissapoinmtemt. Again, leftwich went to sleep and as much as I love Bowles and his style defense but he goes into prevent waaaaaaaay to early. This team gets out coached

Here’s my feedback: Delete your internet account, you drunken journeyman, horse abuser.

  3. El Buco Realisto Says:

Wow!!!!!!!!! Someone in the local media telling the sheep the TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Watch how many if the sheep and so-called fans will say he is just a “hater” or how his play at guard was just below average!!!!!!!!! These sheep and so-called fans will say nothing that will dispute the truth!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Alanbucsfan Says:

Bucs played sloppy on offense last week- several dropped passes and turnover on handoff. They still won by 2 td’s but need to clean up the slop.

Stay committed to the run, regardless of deceiving passing on 1st down stats. It’s about execution and keeping the opponents’ D off balance.
Remember last year’s playoff teams- almost All were successful running the ball.
And an incompletion on 1st down, limits your play calling on 2nd down.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    I can’t disagree much….

I would say that we improved on Turnovers, Penalties & Special Teams…..not offence or defense…..but the improvement was enough to get us a win.

  6. Lamarcus Says:

Thats what I been saying but I have this team going 9-7. It’s just doesn’t look like a super bowl team or a playoff team.

  7. Defense Rules Says:

Don’t say this often, but I agree with Ian right down the line. His analysis, as far as he went, was spot on IMO. And if Bucs played all our remaining games like that, we probably would just about break even on the season.

BUT … the good news is that there was improvement from Week 1 to Week 2, especially on offense & S/Ts. Significant improvement IMO. Considering that we didn’t have a preseason, that we have a number of new players, and that conditioning overall isn’t nearly what it should be yet, I’d say that we should be able to expect better than a break-even season.

BTW, love that Beckles gave Devin White some well-earned accolades, but still disappointed some that neither he nor anyone else seems to recognize that he & LVD are tied at the hip. Yes Devin leads the Bucs with 26 tackles, but right next in line is LVD with 20 tackles. The two feed of each other, and look like one of the best tandems I’ve ever seen.

And along those same lines, our Secondary is playing extremely well AS A UNIT. After White & LVD, our top tacklers are Winfield (17), Dean (13), Whitehead (11), SMB (9) & Davis (8). Their PD numbers aren’t yet where they need to be, but they’ll get there.

  8. Brandon Says:

I have a question!!!!!!!!! If a person uses extra question or exclamation marks does it make them look really smart or really dumb?????????? I think it makes them look like the kid at school that ate crayons!!!!!!!!!!!! Pure stupidity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Usedtocould Says:

    Realist: below average opinions.

  10. Brandon Says:

Quick observation that hasn’t been pointed out by anyone. Gronk has four targets on the season and Brady has three INTs. Two of those INTs came on throws to Gronk. What are the odds? Quite good, actually. Both throws, Brady was under duress. He threw to Gronk hoping the TE could bail him out like in the past. Perhaps their chemistry is off, perhaps Gronk isn’t full speed, but I found it interesting that Brady has thrown one INT all season on throws meant for other people.

  11. TheBradyBunch Says:

Spot on. Hopefully we will see more improvement this week on offense and more as the season progresses.

  12. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Just looking at Ian Beckles makes me hungry, because I associate him with Food.
As far as Barrett developing a power move, thats hard to do, when you don’t really have a lot of power.

  13. m0j0 Says:

This is a glass half full type perspective. Given the circumstances, I think it’s fair to expect this team to be improving as they have more time together, and being playoff caliber before too long.

  14. Bobby M. Says:

I think its a fairly accurate assessment…..we’re not beating top tier teams with our current level of inconsistency. That being said, we are going to have to win some ugly games until the offense gels and Brady gets comfortable. That’s been our reality from day 1. IMO…the biggest let down has been our d-line. I really expected more of a constant pressure, its been more like a few flashes. We hardly sniffed Brees, Bridgewater had a decent amount of time….this week we have a career backup. Life should be hell back there for him this week.

  15. Big Stinky Says:

    Brandon

Only one INT was thrown Gronks way. One was JWatt on the pick 6 and the other was Evans stopping across the middle. Nice try blaming them on Gronk.

  16. Allbuccedup Says:

Ian is right if this team does not show any offensive improvement against the Broncos, as well as the rest of the season, they won’t make the playoffs much less the super bowl.

  17. Goforthwface30 Says:

Agree on Devin White – eyeball test alone, he’s ray Lewis like in that he seems to be involved on EVERY-PLAY. He’s not just a good linebacker and complementary to Lavonte David, we may have the best MLB in the NFL on our hands. All due respect to Lavonte as he’s been rock solid for years, but Devin is fast becoming a super star. Antoine Winfield, another true blue chipper. F Jason Licht tho amirite.

  18. snookman Says:

People……………………..GIVE THE TEAM AN CHANCE TO IMPROVE. You morons expect them to come flying out the gate with no pre-season and a completely new QB? Look how the Ravens, Chiefs, and Titans started last season…. They got better as the season went on.. Chiefs got beat by texans early, Ravens lost to the browns early, and Titans were a mess until week 8.

GIVE THEM A CHANCE TO GET BETTER. I ve seen enough flashes from this team to think that they have the ability to get better………..NO WE ARE NOT WINNING THE SUPERBOWL. We are going to win 10 games and make a playoff spot……….My expectations are to finish the season strong and get into the Playoffs with a Playoff win………

  19. PSL Bob Says:

Agree on the sloppiness, but hey folks, we’re only two games in. They’ve got plenty of time to clean things up. That’s what a lot of people were predicting at the start. They’d get off to a rough start but would be humming by mid season. So, let’s give it a few more games. Hopefully, they’ll pick up wins as they continue to fine tune.

  20. Issac haggins Says:

Have always liked Beckles but when you don’t know the entire roster you are telling us that your not as plugged into the team as you want to appear to be !!! Simple as that , want to comment on the team know the team !!! Your local ,no excuses !! After all this is exactly what Ian would say !! Just shut up and listen Ian, go watch tape with Tony do some more research and give us your always pretty spot on views !!

  21. james west Says:

2 possibly 3 TDs dropped 125-130 yards passing dropped, did enough to win, that’s all that matters, keep stacking them wins boys

  22. Casual Observer Says:

If the Bucs with the division, will you stop with the Beckles opinions?

  23. Casual Observer Says:

    win

  24. Clean House Says:

    5109

  25. Buc Wild Says:

Does anyone account for the dropped passes in Game 2 ? We’re talking 3 TDs. Brady leads the league in dropped passes right now. I don’t expect to see the offense in a great rhythm for a few more weeks, just can’t make too many mistakes until then.

  26. orlbucfan Says:

The Defense will continue to gradually improve. If Arians does nothing else, he brought Todd Bowles to Tampa. 🙂

  27. Cobraboy Says:

Reaality: the Kitties was a second pre-season game.

No team in the NFL is fitting on all cylinders yet.

That should end soon, possibly this week across the league.

  28. Bellingham Bucs Fan Says:

Thanks for combing through Beckles’ political monologues for football opinions so I can be amused by them without having to listen to him.

  29. Mike Johnson Says:

I very rarely agrree with Got punished when he was Buc Beckles. But he is mostly right with this article. Bucs are gonna have to step it up if they plan on any superbowl. 50 mil man got 3 interceptions already.

  30. Topdoggie Says:

I was depressed when the big dog passed. I prayed the wouldn’t put the clown show in it’s place. Sure enough when I got in my car and turned on the radio I wanted to hurl. At least the aren’t guessing the age of old celebrities and calling it sports talk like the used to. The trow it back segment really sucks though. The station should take a page out of Rons old shiw and say seeee yaaaa to that nonsense segment.

  31. Topdoggie Says:

My phone keeps changing they to The.

  32. Topdoggie Says:

I guess I should take Ian up on the feed back thing and email him instead of just complaining.

  33. Joe in Michigan Says:

Donovan Smith should be cut AND benched? In my 55 years of life, I’ve never heard of a player being BOTH cut AND benched.

  34. Joe in Michigan Says:

Was it last year that Beckles said the Bucs would be 2-13-1? Or the year before?

  35. JimbobBucsFan Says:

I appreciate why the two Joes like to have provocative headlines frequently for their articles.  😉

Wow, the Surrealistic Realist finds himself in alignment with the sentiments about and analysis of our beloved Buccaneers with the thoughts of one, Ian Beckles.  What a shocker!   🙃   Not!

Have either of them watched any other games in the NFL this season.? Have they even sampled what is going on out there.

Have they drawn no conclusions as to any effects this “unusual” year of the virus has had. Can it be that the lack of a normal off season has any bearing? Can it be that this has no bearing on the performance of our team in comparison to other on-paper “super bowl contenders” in real world games?

Can it be that the normal challenges that teams that have new coaching staffs and or the ones with new quarterbacks behind center are also meaningless this year?

Can we really make sweeping assessments after the  first two games of this season?

    Just wondering?

  36. unbelievable Says:

I usually can’t stand Beckles, but this seems pretty spot on.

I actually said to my wife after the game: “We’re an 8-8 team. S. O. B.”

Now we certainly have the potential to be better than that, but the team needs to play more consistently to make that happen.

The only thing I’d disagree with him about is the tight ends. Can have much production if you’re not given opportunities, AND your coach shrugs and says “well we don’t use them in our scheme”.

  37. unbelievable Says:

    Dang what did I do

  38. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

The defense was the BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT of the game period especially how they kept the Aints under 300 yards. They gave up how many 3rd and longs??? A td on 4th down. Wide receivers W I I D D E open. They returned 10 starters right? Couldn’t tell in the 2nd half! On that flea flicker they were lucky Brady under threw it because the resulting plays took at least 30 second off the end of the game which would’ve more than enough time for the stunkin Panthers to win the game. This defense needs to stay out of the redzone because they give up more tds than field goals.
