Leftwich And Head Coaching Jobs

September 10th, 2020

Head coaching future.

Joe has maintained that if the Bucs make the playoffs and the offense is humming, offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich may not be here next year.

Say park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring Bucs quarterback Tom Brady throws for 5,000 yards, on the heels of a quarterback doing the same last year for the Bucs who many couldn’t wait to run out of town, Leftwich’s status as a head coaching candidate may never be higher.

Those feats would be better than any item on friggin’ Josh McDaniels’ resume, that’s for sure.

In an article on Yahoo! Sports, Terez Paylor makes the case for Leftwich. But not before Leftwich helps guide Brady in a new town with a new team in a new offense and gets the Bucs to the playoffs (or beyond).

Arians knows first-hand how brutal the hiring cycle can be. He was a part of several winning teams during his 15 seasons as an assistant, including five as the Steelers’ offensive coordinator, when he won a Super Bowl and made it to another. He didn’t land his first non-interim head coaching job until 2013, when he was 60.

“You never know how many opportunities each year will exist and what they’re looking for, so, yeah, you do the best job you can do at your job,” Arians said. “You can’t think about it, because it will drive you crazy.”

Leftwich understands this. He is intensely focused on his job, and has routinely declined individual interviews for pieces on himself this offseason. Other NFL coaches have taken a similar approach, believing it’s the best thing they can do for their careers.

Paylor notes Leftwich turned down several interview requests from reporters this offseason, instead choosing to work. Arians stated above that’s the best way to get an interview; worry about your job first.

Get the Bucs to the playoffs and then Leftwich can worry about the Jags or the Jets or the Bears.

Then again if we are successful this season Arians could retire and leave it to Leftwich. I’m sure the Bucs would offer him the HC position.

You know, maybe that is already in the works? Maybe part of the deal with the Glazers when Arians came in was to set the table for Leftwich or Bowles to take over? Excellent point.

  3. Roy T. Buford Says:

BL doesn’t yet seem ready to be awarded a HC job to me, as I’m not sold this is HIS offense. How would he do taking a group of scrubs and turning them into a high powered offense? How well does he integrate the other coaches he has? That’s the key question for if he’d be a good HC. Yeah, I can see him getting interviews under the Rooney, which is very good place to start, but he likely has some more development to undergo.

It doesn’t matter how many yards Tom Brady throws for, with two caveats. The first caveat is he helps his team win and is not the reason they lose, when they do–he makes them better than they’d be without him. The second one is if takes them the post season.

Why such a browbeat article on our QB three days before his debut? Hands down the most famous player ever to put on a Bucs uniform. Sad.

The loser #3, Jameis L. Winston, was not run out of town. He took an Uber one night and made his own bed from there–he alone created his fate.

The GOAT created his own. What a diffference.

  4. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

Leftwich over Bowles if it comes down to it. We’ve seen Bowles as a HC, and let’s just say he’s MUCH better as a Defensive Coordinator…

    Give Leftwich a chance.

  5. Allbuccedup Says:

Arians retires Leftwich head coach Freddie Kitchens offensive assitant.

  6. Allbuccedup Says:

Of course that all depends on the playoffs or not.

  7. Marine Buc Says:

I figured Todd Bowles was next in line for the Bucs job.

  8. Kobe Faker Says:

“What game will Brady chewout incompetent Leftwich and make him cry?

    Beginning 4th quarter game 1”

    Kobe Faker

  9. Roy T. Buford Says:

@Marine…I agree. Let’s see if he really turns this D around. That could certainly elevate him. Perhaps push Leftwich up to Asst Head Coach and promote Clyde Christensen from QB coach to OC–that will keep Rosen on track if he’s the future. Hopefully we get to keep Brady another year.

  10. Costa Rica John Says:

Maybe Tom Brady will be the Bucs new head coach if he ever retires. Only time will tell.

  11. SB Says:

Guys there is an article I just read over on the ‘four letter’ that says TWICE as many bets have already been placed on the Bucs than have been placed on the Chiefs.
If Vegas doesn’t want a team to win then they rarely do. Disparaging news to say the least.

    there’s a reason why we got Rosen….BL!!!

look at the teams in the NFC…packers, niners, rams….all have greater young offensive minded HCs….

    bucs gotta keep up…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  14. SOEbuc Says:

I really believe that’s in the works and am excited about the thought and hoping it happens. Clyde Christiansen as OC.

didnt seem to be a problem for sean mcvay…or matt lafleur….or cliff kingsbury…or matt nagy…

when all those HCs were once OCs they were running the HCs offense lol…..sean and matt were running jay grudens offense….nagy was running andy reids offense….cliff came in with his own offense….

BL will get HC offers after the season….the question is, will the BUCS give BL the dirk koetter treatment….force BA out because they’re scared to lose their OC who had a productive offense to another team….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  16. SB Says:

813…….Are you enjoying the lack of Gators’ news. I am hoping we stay under the radar for as long as possible.

Ndog…can fill in if and when Leftwich leaves

  18. Casual Observer Says:

Way too premature discussion. Play some games first.

  19. Smashsquatch Says:

Leftwich has been groomed to take over the Bucs since day one. He didn’t even get a sniff as a HC after last season. This tells me it’s the worst kept secret in the league and already a done deal.

  20. Zwak Says:

I think many people that came here have other things in the works. Will Brady be the next Bucs GM when he’s done playing?

  21. 813bucboi Says:

    SB

thats right….i like all the GA and bama talk…let em sleep…all 3 of my favorite sports teams have a real shot at winning it all this year…BUCS,GATORS,RAYS!!!

not really into hockey but GO BOLTS!!!..did we win last night?…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  22. Casual Observer Says:

    Good question, Zwak.

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I would be against Byron Leftwich becoming our head coach after Arians retires, at least as of this point.

The move reeks of a Raheem Morris type of move and we all know how that worked out. Todd Bowles would be a good candidate, though I’m not even sure about him.

Heck, Lori Locust should even be considered in a few years.

  24. Cainishere Says:

    What are you people smoking?

  25. SOEbuc Says:

Does anyone wanna say what such a huge reason the Bucs haven’t made the playoffs in the past decade? I will. Coaching. Arians brought a bunch of great position coaches and Todd Bowels. This coaching staff was 10x better than any since Chucky. Need to do everything to keep this staff together. If not Byron, than Bowels. Bowels HC was awful with the Jets, but no one has a chance as a first time HC with the Jets. OC Clyde Christensen.

“Not really into hockey but GO BOLTS!!!..did we win last night?”

We won 2-1 but it wasn’t a very exciting win. KUUUUUUUUCH!!!

    #GO BOLTS!!!

  27. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Get the Bucs to the playoffs and then Leftwich can literally choose his own dream job, and paycheck.

  28. JimmyJack Says:

The great thing about getting Bruce is we got most of his coaching tree.

And I feel like all our coaches have plans and goals for the future. I feel like if everything goes according to plan Byron and Todd will get to the point where they each have opportunities. When those opportunities come they will weight the options and figure out who gets the best opportunity and should move on………I freaking doubt neither Tood or Bowles would walk off next year to run a tanking Jags team, for example. But if, let’s say, Eagles or Vikings job pops up they may take it.

The coach who doesnt take a new job will want to coach here. They will be taking what Bruce hands down to them. By the looks of it we will be a playoff team with an established culture. The continuity will be there and it will be a great situation(if all goes to plan).

And I think all our assistants are buying in too. Byron and Tood will eventually split and with respect they will split the assistants 50/50. Then Todd and Vyron try to grow their own trees.

Byron or Todd will be our next HC. The opportunities each gets offered will determine who.

  29. DalvinCookRules Says:

I would LOVE to see Leftwich as a HC. Betting against him and whichever team is dumb enough to make him the HC is the easiest money you will ever make in life.

  30. Red Blud Bucs Boy Says:

I think the Rosen signing signals that Leftwich knows this job is his when Arians and Brady walk away together. He’s getting his guy ready to take over with him. Leftwich/Rosen 2022

  31. Craig Says:

No one even looked at Leftwich at the end of last season. Even if the Bucs gain a Stupor Bowl, those 30 interceptions of last season will haunt him.

Arians retiring and Leftwich getting tagged might be his only way to head coach.

Just hope he stays out of Brady’s way.

  32. Buczilla Says:

If this dudes successful, he ain’t going anywhere just like “All lives matter” said in the first comment. Even the Glazers wouldn’t be so dumb as to let this young coach get away. I don’t think so anyways, but I’ve been watching this part time train wreck since the beginning and I’ve learned to never say never when it comes to Buccaneer ownership (Be it Culverhouse or the Glazers) act the fool.

  33. Buc Wild Says:

Byron isn’t leaving the Bucs. He’ll stick around until BA retires and BA will lobby for him to be the next coach.
