“I Don’t See Us Being That Inexperienced”

September 12th, 2020

It’s the famous mugging that ended the Bucs-Cardinals game

Speaking to a national audience this week, Bucco Bruce Arians addressed the Bucs’ greatest apparent weakness.

Tampa Bay’s Big-3 cornerbacks and starting safeties are all 23 years old and under.

With a very stout run defense in place, that’s a recipe for opposing offenses to come after the Bucs through the air over and over and over again.

There’s talent in the Bucs defensive backfield, but it’s still an unknown on an NFL scale. Arians said on SiriusXM NFL Radio that he sees the young, including rookie safety Antoine Winfield, Jr., but Arians sees a group that’s mature beyond its years.

“We’re very, very young on the back end, but I don’t see us being that inexperienced,” Arians said of the secondary. “They got to go against some of the best players in December last year. So I think defensively, I think our young players are really, really growing.”

And now the talking season is over. It’s time for the secondary to produce. Joe thinks there will be some ugly roasting that might cost the Bucs a couple of games. But the key is the group staying healthy and progressing.

If these guys can survive the season, Joe would expect a much stronger unit then the Bucs will trot out in September and October. As for the depth, well, if Ryan Smith is covering Calvin Ridley in December and Mike Edwards is in for Jordan Whitehead, then the Bucs offense better be humming.

Nobodys been doing much tackling this year, so thats almost sure to be an issue on week one.

  2. bucsince79 aka bumaneer Says:

Need to keep pressure on Brees. He wasn’t throwing well at the end of last year, However this is week 1… TB12 can roast them as well….

  3. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Youth is actually an advantage, the later it gets in a game.
Hell, when I was 23, I could literally run all day!
I have faith in our Kids, because they go against our receivers all day, and have played football all their lives.

  4. Roy T. Buford Says:

I only saw part of the game Thursday, but tackling didn’t really look any worse for Game 1 than it normally does. If anything, I’d love a league-wide lesson learned from all this COVID mess is the don’t really need pre-season games at all. A cople scrimmages, maybe.

  5. SOEbuc Says:

I think SMB coming to play. Put on 10 lbs of muscle. Gotta pick in the Superdome last year. He’s very professional and knowledgeable. I’m only expecting better things to come from his rookie year.

  6. Darin Says:

And Brady will be roasting other secondaries. Let the shootouts begin. Or the10-3’s. Who gives a F. Just win

  7. Rico 210 Says:

Look Brees is a future HOFer. They’ll get tested for sure BUT I have the upmost confidence in them to perform at their best.
    Go Bucs

  8. JimmyJack Says:

The good thing I see with this secondary is that they can make plays on the ball…..They could get burnt a few times tomorrow and still turn the game on a dime with one big play.

I’m almost expecting it…..I believe in these guys.

  9. JimmyJack Says:

    Oh and GO BUCS!!

  10. Pewter Power Says:

They are all professionals, even if the Bucs were to beat the Saints decisively they will have some big plays it’s the nfl and even Jacksonville won 6 games let year and held the saints to 13 points. The butt kicking Saints have handed us the last couple years yea the Bucs should be more hungry. If we’re winning those close games this will be a playoff team. I’d prefer a statement game and one sided victory from this team but not telling what we will get

  11. adam from ny Says:

they will get out witted here and there due to inexperience and youth…

athletically they seem to be able to compete…

they will get duped on occasion losing the mental game, thus getting burned by clever offensive schemes…

    that’s how i see it

  12. Looking at You! Says:

Listen Guys, I just want to POINT OUT something that I think is PRETTY FUNNY considering that SOMEHOW, At Least, 99 percent of the ENTIRE Media * “including my favorite guys here at JBF” seems to have Grossly Overlooked…

Don’t get me wrong, the asterisk is there for A Reason because I “could be” wrong about the mentioning from JBF, so to them if I’m wrong about this (the mentioning it part) please forgive me. BUT I’M GOING TO LAY IT DOWN ON THE TABLE HARD! And that would be one SMALL MATTER that I just think is actually quite funny that isn’t MENTIONED hardly AT ALL!

Speaking of small “matters”, has anyone considered how tiny Drew Brees is compared to Tom Brady? The reason I bring that Fact Up is because it Leads Right into the Point I’m about to make… DURABILITY

Everyone including EVERY MEDIA PUNDIT OUT THERE remarks on Tom’s age (43)
Did anyone Really talk about Drew Brees’ age (41)…

CLEARLY A GIANT AGE DESPERATELY! I mean that 2 year difference in age is HUGE!
    “Or Is It?” ???

    I THINK NOT!

In fact, it seems to me that the “feel” is that Drew Brees is ON his LAST LEG… Isn’t that true? Isn’t THAT the general “feeling” around all circles INCLUDING in New Orleans. Well IMHO I say Yes, THAT IS “INDEED” the feelings concerning his football shelf life.

In fact Correct me IF I’m Wrong but wasn’t he OUT of last year’s season for 5 COUNT THEM, 5 games? Oh, INDEED HE WAS!

Fellow Buccaneer Fans have NO FEAR! I believe the TRUTH to be that Mr. Brees is in Far Greater Danger than Our Tommy Brady.

The fact is I believe they Both live in fear of physical harm. It’s just that it’s my Very Humble Opinion that Drew is probably in his Own Head over that FEAR, Far more than the Media lets on…

    I smell a bit of a conspiracy.

I sense a TRUE FEAR of Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback TOM BRADY! And perhaps a VERY TRUE JEALOUSY of OUR QB!

I SAY BRING IT ON! AND I SAY DREW BREES, YOU BETTER BE RUNNING FOR YOUR LIFE SIR! Yeah they got 1, Count Them, 1 quality rusher.

WE’VE GOT 2! A JPP IS REAL HUNGRY! Don’t EVEN get me started about what’s COMING UP THE MIDDLE!

You better RUN DREW RUN! Who was their back up QB again?

    GO BUCS!

  13. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Bad boys bad boys whatcha gonna do whatcha gonna do when we come for you. Go Bucs!

  14. August 1976 Buc Says:

A great offense hides many deffensive weaknesses when they are cruising and scoring, but as everyone knows there are hiccups along the way. The secondary will have some moments of roasting like Joe says, but the secondary during the last 6 games showed they can play at an NFL level. They should continue to progress, especially with the addition of A Winfield. Bottom line is teams are not going to make a living running the ball against the Bucs. Opponents will be 1 demensional, and predictable, they will have to throw. So in the end advantage Bucs. This team will win at least 10 games, I believe more but we will see. The Bucs opponents know now that they had better score at least 30 if they want to have a chance against the Brady Bunch. Again, you had better put up a 30 spot baby if you even want to think about woopin Tampa Bay!! mic drop! GO BUCS!!!!!!!

  15. JimmyJack Says:

Looking good points and I agree. Drew looked worn down in December last year.

This will be a big battle tomorrow to see which QB looks to be in better shape. Expect whichever team comes out on top to become the new favorite in the NFC.

  16. Rod Munch Says:

Ryan Smith was the worst corner I had ever seen, ever. He’s terrible.

Then Licht managed to one-up that by drafting MJ, who was basically Ryan Smith if he ran a 4.74 instead of a 4.4. Ryan Smith was a 4th rounder, so yeah, you’d like him to work out, but the vast majority of 4th rounders do not. But a 2nd rounder? Why in the world would you draft a guy who is slow and had very little production in the 2nd round? It still makes no sense.

But back to Ryan Smith… if he sees the field for anything other than special teams, this many years in, when it’s obvious how bad he is, that’s a real huge concern. At least with the two corners last year Licht was smart enough to draft guys who had speed, because what are you going to do with a slow corner when you run man-to-man defenses?

  17. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

In the end it’s our time and our house. Excuses are for losers! Time to punch folks square in the mouth and show we are no longer a laughing stock. The Glazers did this for us true fans who have gone through a lot, and I’m telling you we will prevail! Bucs dominance until then end!

  18. SOEbuc Says:

Looking at you…Tom Brady still looks like a taller Lt. Johnny Rico from Starship Troopers and is perfectly healthy. One thing media doesn’t reference as “QB Whisperer” to BA anymore. Been saying Brady can’t play in BA system like they didn’t even have a plan lined up for that before even consider signing Tom.

Saints first play: White puts Brees on IR and a fumble scooped up by Winfield Jr for a return TD and Jameis steps in, lol.

  19. JimmyJack Says:

Munch. Ryan Smith only made the team because he’s really good at special teams. He is fun to watch on punts. We have other guys on the bench that will take snaps at Corner instead of Ryan Smith. Ryan Smith basically isnt even a corner on this team. Just a ST player.

And I bet if we see injuries start to mount you’d see a guy like Mazzie Wilkins called up and be ahead of Ryan Smith on the depth chart.

You’d probably see Winfield moved down to play Corner before Eyan Smith. He’s a nonfactor.

  20. Iamabuc Says:

Not dreaming, for real; I believe our guys get a jump start on them and then never look back. I see our defense being hungrier to show off their worth and I believe our offense have been training longer than others this particular spring therefore giving us an edge. Have no fear, Brady is here!

  21. Cainishere Says:

To the team, Good luck during the game fellas.
Treat it like the super bowl and run down that clock.
    Own that time of possession.
No penalties. You guys are pros no need for penalties.
    Brees must be harassed constantly.
Brees is weak if you hound him he will tire and we win.
They will be throwing almost constantly against us.
Let’s pick em off make em pay for it.
I believe in my team GO BUCS!!!!

  22. Cainishere Says:

I dunno about you guys but doesn’t Tom look great in Buc Orange? I love seeing it

  23. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

    Looks damn good!

  24. Buccfan37 Says:

Two old QBs trying to win the all time passing yards title up against each another. Oh the drama.
