“He’s Sharp. He’s Big. He’s Got Everything You’re Looking For”

September 8th, 2020

Why is Josh Rosen, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, now the No. 4 quarterback on the Bucs’ depth chart?

Bucco Bruce Arians answered that question today following the Bucs just signing 23-year-old Rosen to their practice squad after the Miami Dolphins cut him.

“Josh wanted to be here. We wanted him here. You know, I really liked him coming out [of the draft],” Arians said. “Byron had him for 8 or 9 games as starter (laughs) with a really, really bad football team. You know, he was around Miami. He’s sharp. He’s big. He’s got everything you’re looking for. So it’s a great guy to groom.”

That’s the key word: “groom.”

The Bucs have the coaches and the quarterback, Blaine Gabbert Tom Brady; it’s a perfect incubator for Rosen. Tampa Bay should be able to get the most out of him, though it’s unclear how much Rosen will have to give after two failed stops in two years and scant practice reps with the Bucs.

I think if we can get him to the point of being a back up by next yr…..that would be a pretty good sign he’s evolving well and worth hanging on to.

  2. Mike Says:

Just another great move by Licht and the front office. They are really hitting it out of the park this offseason!

  3. ModHairKen Says:

Fournette and Rosen. Top 10 picks cost Bucs nothing. Licht gets credit.

  4. ben Says:

Licht is being told what to do now ..

  5. Bucsfanman Says:

ModHair- We already know what Fournette can do. Imagine if Rosen cracks the starting line-up?! It could almost make you forgive drafting a kicker in the 2nd round…almost!

  6. thisisouryear!! Says:

Licht hit the homerun with Arians a year ago. Add Brady this year and everyone wants to be here. It’s nice to see things rolling.

  7. JimmyJack Says:

Um yeah Licht deserves the credit. He’s take a big brunt of blame for all our losing. To keep if fair you gotta give him credit if we win.

  8. lambchop Says:

    @ben,

All teams have GMs and coaches working together to find talent.

This rhetoric about Licht being told what to do is so asinine to the point of hilarity.

The GM doesn’t give the orders to the coaches on personnel any more than coaches telling the GM we want all pro-bowlers at any cost.

  9. Brandon Says:

All of Rosen’s dropbacks from last year are available on YouTube. In two years in the NFL he’s had three offensive coordinators, two horrible teams around him, and still shown promise. He’s technically as old as a 5th year senior so the needle is still pointing way up on Rosen. This is a can’t lose scenario. I can definitely see him being QB #2 by next season.

  10. Unbuc'n Believable Says:

With his cap friendly number, will he get a chance to subplant Griffin in 2020 for a spot on the active roster? It may be possible if the team needs to fill holes later in the season.

  11. Clean House Says:

We had the #1 overall pick who’s 26 and led the NFL in total offense

  12. Steven007 Says:

Clean house, he’s not even the backup on the Saints. He’s the backups backup. Why?

  13. NDog is an idiot Says:

Rosen can be a butter knife and still be sharper than JayMiss between the ears!

  14. NDog is an idiot Says:

    JayMiss…. America’s 3rd string Quarterback!

  15. Mike Johnson Says:

Not high on Rosen. But he might be better than Gabbert which..does not say much. He’s young and coachable, We shall see.

  16. NDog is an idiot Says:

Rosen could be as sharp as a butter knife and still be sharper between the ears as JayMiss is!!

  17. 40TDs Says:

Clean house is not tired of loosing?!?!??!?!

    Check “The Sheet”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Bojim Says:

    Third time’s a charm.

  19. JimBuc2 Says:

    @Clean House
Hey nuggler. Clean that goo off your chin.

Check the youtuve video called “The Tragedy of Josh Rosen.”

I learned a lot about the kid. I say “kid” because he’s only 23…with two years NFL experience.

The vid concludes as I do: Rosen needs stability more than anything. The producer opines Pittsburgh is the best spot, but looks like Rosen thinks Tampa could be the spot.

I also watched some “drop back” videos. I will say both the Cardinals and ‘Fins have some real talent issues on O. Guys can’t block, get open, or catch. That said, Rosen is much more mobile than I thought he’d be.

This is an excellent low risk/hiogh reward signing. I suspect Griffin’s days may be numbered when Rosen gets accustomed to the Buycs O & personnel…knowing his role is not to save the team as the QB messiah.

And who better to learn how to be an NFL quarterback than an understudy of the GOAT?

I won’t be surprised at all if Riosen is the Bucs “QB of the Future.” Not calling it, just sayin’…

AND he still has two years on his rookie deal that the Bucs don’t pay for. So it’s not a money issue for the kid.

  21. Cobraboy Says:

Looks like Sean Payton didn’t “check the sheets.”

Winston is officially #3. Will he be deactivated on game day?

  22. adam from ny Says:

rosen just needs to be groomed the old fashioned qb way now…

    get drafted…

sit and learn for a few years…

then be eased into the system…

he is now in the perfect situation here…

the drafting of a qb and throwing him to the wolves is only a thing that has become normal the past 10-15 years…

and a lot had to do with the huge contracts and stuff…

some qbs flopped out just because they were rushed…

    in fact most flopped out…

some guys are built to be groomed and slowly eased in…that could be rosen…

    who knows…

seems like the best situation for him now…

learn from the best of the best…quietly…

then get eased in as the starter in about 2-3 years

  23. JimbobBucsFan Says:

As much as I liked JW and wanted him to succeed, he still had bad habits that were deeply rooted. After almost a full season under “the Quarterback Whisperer’s tutelage” he wouldn’t budge. Five-plus years into to the NFL he still has a chance, however.

Winston could never be a great poker player. It seems he could not learn to “know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em”!

  24. NDog is an idiot Says:

Clean House loved it when JayMiss Flashed him too!! Clean House is IN LOVE after that flashing!!

  25. Steven Says:

With him just being on the practice squad can’t a team just sign him off of there like we did with Griffin and the Saints?

  26. Joe Says:

With him just being on the practice squad can’t a team just sign him off of there like we did with Griffin and the Saints?

Practice squad is weird this year. Right now don’t have the time to research all the rules (you may by Googling “NFL practice squad rules”) but this year you can “save” four guys on the practice squad each week that cannot be touched by another team.

  27. BillyBucFan Says:

I really don’t think Rosen is at the top of ANY teams wish list right now anyway.

  28. Allbuccedup Says:

They need to put Griffin on the practice squad and put Rosen behind Gabbert. Some team could have a QB go down after week one and grab Rosen. But I know they are not going to grab Griffin.

  29. Oneilbucs Says:

Let me say this trust me if Brees go down Jamies will be the quarterback . Tyson hill is a gadget guy and he’s 31 years old . So I still don’t know why yall haye Jamies so much that yall can’t stop talking about him . We haven’t won nothing and I will say it again that s super teams has never won a championship in football . So with that being said we look good on paper but we still have to play the games .

  30. Robertg Says:

Practice squad players are free to sign with other NFL teams, but they have to be signed to the 53-man active roster of the acquiring team. A practice squad player cannot be signed to another practice squad unless he is first released.
It’s his choice to sign with another team! No team can just sign him
