Dare Is Done

September 4th, 2020

Former Bucs RB Dare Ogunbowale.

UPDATED 9:35 a.m. – Dare Ogunbowale is a former Bucs running back.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network brings word that the Bucs are moving on from the former Wisconsin Badgers running back.

When the Bucs signed Leonard Fournette this week, one big complaint came from people wondering about the fewer touches Ogunbowale would get.

Really.

Ogunbowale was awful. Maybe he was OK on special teams but he was a butcher on offense. To Joe, Ogunbowale represented how awful the Bucs were at running back. And if you want a lesson in coachspeak/playerspeak, see how Tom Brady said two weeks ago that Ogunbowale was a strong leader and had a big role in the offense.

Maybe he can go to New Orleans and destroy screen passes for Jameis again?

Dang. Just when Joe figures out to spell his name without looking it up. 🤷‍♂️ Joe wonders what it will say if Ogunbowale clears waivers and lands on the Bucs’ new veteran practice squad.

Dare beefed up to 220 this year from 205. I wonder if this slowed him down. He was already a tad too slow for a RB.

Great special teamer and pass catcher but didn’t really show much running the ball.

  2. gbobucsfan Says:

wish this guy well. just not for TB

  3. Sarasota Garey Says:

We have the worst GM ever, I cant believe we cut our special teams captain 9 days before our first game. I guess were just tanking for Trevor.

  4. DaytonaBryan Says:

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE FOURNETTE SIGNING?

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Quite sure Brady signed off on this move…..so…

We have Fournette, Rojo, Shady & Vaughn……perhaps Calais if he is the return man.

Our ST just took a hit and has been taking hits with other moves….

  6. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Sarasota Garey says, “We have the worst GM ever, I cant believe we cut our special teams captain 9 days before our first game.”

We had a crapy special team last year, what makes you think keeping Dare would make that much of a difference? The special team coaches are going in a different direction this year.

  7. Doctor Stroud Says:

This is a good move for a GM who has had a lot of bad moves. AC/DC-lovin’ GM Jason Licht is not that much different than Spandau Ballet-lovin’ ex-GM Mark Dominik, other than his better taste in bands. Let’s hope this season is different.

  8. BillyBucFan Says:

I’m pretty sure Vaughn can play Special Teams better than Dare as he is faster with better vision.

Chappelle Russell, Quinton Bell, Justin Watson, maybe Tyler Johnson etc.

We have the pieces for special teams just no practice.

Every NFL team will be behind the 8 ball this year on ST, so I’m not worried.

  9. August 1976 Buc Says:

They know by now what they have with Dare, nothing special for NFL standards. The rookies are still an unknown qauntity, and they just drafted them, so they get a pass for now. I think was an easy decision for them to make. Maybe someone in the NFL will pick up Dare. The CFL would find him a place quick. Hope he gets a job somewhere. GO BUCS!!!!

  10. Sarasota Garey Says:

    @alabama. Twas a joke.

  11. Marine Buc Says:

This surprises me a little… I thought Vaughn was heading for IR and Calais would be cut. Leaving room for Dare to make the club especially with TJ Logan already on IR and Dare being a solid special teams contributor.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see Dare back in Tampa if he doesn’t get picked up by another team.

  12. D-Rome Says:

Ogunbowale was awful. Maybe he was OK on special teams but he was a butcher on offense.

Spot on, Joe. I don’t get some of these fans around here. There are actual fans out there bummed out that Dare and Matt Gay got cut. He was not good.

Sorry man! I haven’t had my coffee yet.

  14. AlteredEgo Say: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Perfect example of how tough it is for an elite athlete to make it in the NFL … the guy had a great attitude and gave every ounce of life he had to make it!

  15. Joeypoppems Says:

This one surprises me. Seemed like he checked all of the boxes needed for a depth guy. I didnt think he was going to have an impact on Offense, and he shouldnt have, but now u got 4 guys who all contribute in the same way.

Id rather them cut Dare than keep 5 tho. I just thought Dare doing something the other 4 didnt, ST, would land him a spot. Especially since Arians said ST was the deciding factor for guys on the bubble, then the ST captain gets cut lol

  16. Youngbucs Says:

Joe that’s weak destroy screen passes for the guy????? High School QBs know you throw that in the dirt!!!!! That’s a prime example of why winston not here clear as day!!!!!

  17. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

I always felt like Dare was servicable as a RB and pretty dang good on special teams. I wish him the best.

  18. ocala Says:

It is a little surprising to me too. As a running back he was awful, but as special teams captain last year I would have thought he would stick around. I guess it is possible he could be signed to the practice squad

  19. Cobraboy Says:

The guy is an overachiever. What he lacked inn talent he made up in grit and determination.

My only concern about this move—and I am totally fine with it, was never a fan of the guy at all–is “what about special teams?”

  20. Ndog Says:

So let’s get this straight the Bucs have replaced their starting running back, their third down back, their right tackle, they’re starting tight end and their kicker.

Aren’t these all the exact positions that somebody on this page was referring to all year long as major problems with the running game and with the kicking game yet some other player was constantly blamed for every single thing that went wrong.

Isn’t it interesting that in one off season this team could fix all those problems yet they haven’t been able to fix it for the past five years?

    Interesting isn’t it?

  21. Steven007 Says:

It’s no more interesting in this post than it was in the other post. Don’t be a cut and paster.

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Ndog

    You forgot the QB fix……

  23. Daniel Says:

He’s not even good on special teams. Anyone remember him getting blown up Week 1 against the 49ers on that punt block? It’s a complete myth that he’s a good special teams player

  24. Youngbucs Says:

Ndog don’t forget replaced QB he was part of the problem!!!!!! That’s what you don’t wanna acknowledge that’s why everything you say is moot.

  25. Kobe Faker Says:

    “Dare I say

The Bucs will have the worst special team in the NFL”

    Kobe Faker

  26. Jerry Jones Says:

I was dead wrong about Dare, I’ll admit it, I just did not see that coming.

  27. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You know your team is getting more talented when you start to feel the loss of players…….there will be more hitting the streets that we would have like to have kept.

If you give me a choice between adding Fournette & having a loss of a ST player…….that’s a no-brainer.

  28. chris L Says:

wow blaming dare for jameis’ struggles. classic. this could bite the bucs in the behind. special teams we still need to get better at and we just let go of a captain.

  29. lambchop Says:

Dare was featured heavy in the new bucs current episode. Hopefully, he doesn’t get picked up and gets a spot on the PS.

  30. SOEbuc Says:

    @joe

Arians is the master of blowing Tampa club cigar smoke up people asses. Can’t wait to see this season unfold.

    BillyBucFan… Johnson is on IR

  31. lambchop Says:

Just for ST consideration, not really the backfield unless there’s an injury.

  32. Gettinthebucs Says:

Lol Brady probably knew he wasn’t gonna be here after a couple of those berkeley prep practices.

  33. ItzOK Says:

dare who? This guy did nothing last year. Plus its a passing league

  34. Jmarkbuc Says:

What is special teams anymore anyway? Punt return team, punt team, extra points and field goals. The kick off is a moot point anymore so I don’t know how his loss will be so great.

And Ndog, you don’t bring in this many pieces for a quarterback who couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn. Get it?

  35. Frankinthe813 Says:

    Raymond Calais cut too

  36. BigHog Says:

Playerspeak…man just say it he has (Tom) a forked tongue!!

  37. james west Says:

i was watching a bucco bruce arians press conference yesterday, and he let it slip that brady wanted to play another 4-5 years, could it be we have the goat until he’s 50?, wouldn’t that be awesome, he play’s until he’s 45 then signs a 5 year contract with a team option on the last two seasons, man i would be ecstatic to say the least, more than i am now, if that’s possible

no ndog!!!…even you blamed the QB once upon a time by claiming even THO we had a QB that turned the ball over so many times we still wouldve won games even with all our woes!!!!!!

Unlike most I tell the truth without bias, today the QB sucked. Now Barber had a bad fumble, Perriman didn’t come back on the third pick, Jones fell on what would have been a huge screen play, OJ stopped running on a route and we had a FG blocked BUT if the QB plays better then we win this game period. The defense played fantastic, the running game wasn’t horrible and the oline provided good protection. That is not common but today it was so this loss falls on the QB.

    KEEP EMBARRASSING YOURSELF!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  39. Daniel Says:

This team will probably have terrible special teams, but it won’t be because we cut Dare

  40. BigHog Says:

I’m a BUC FAN and we have changed “EVERYTHING” with this ALL IN PLAN, so it was most definitely was not the total fault of Mr. 5,000, it’s a TEAM GAME !!! Lunch Time: HENNY AND HOG get yo-self some!

  41. Clean House Says:

Very interesting day today- This gives me more comfort about them getting rid of Winston- at least it is being acknowledged that much of last years team was subpar and that certain position groups were lacking. At least they’re acknowledging that some of the scrubs are indeed scrubs. Makes me have a tiny bit more faith in the coach. I appreciate them attempting to fill holes with veterans. I’d like them to hopefully make a move or two for the secondary, I think it’s very thin despite all their talk. I’m also not totally sold on their o-line depth or quality- Ghe only problem with too many moves at this point is even less continuity and understanding and communication.

I still Believe JW has upside and I hope he sticks w the Saints- If for some reason he he’s cut, say if the Saints were just trolling the Bucs or just wanted to pick his brain about our offense, he should replace Gabbert or Griffen as our backup.

It’s obvious Brady has a better command at QB as one of the best to ever do it.
I will concede that point. Don’t mind TB12 over JW2, but I still believe he can be good, after all he did lead the NFL in total offense, passing yards, passing yards per game and was #2 in TD’s only behind MVP Lamar Jackson.

I think this is a valiant attempt at going all in but with this off-season and so many one year deals, it seems somewhat sloppy. But it sure is entertaining.

  42. Clean House Says:

Licht is a serious character- they should call him Mr. Entertainment

  43. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

He had to go. No room and he wasn’t very good anyways.

  44. firethecannons Says:

Matt Gay and Dare Ogunbowale deserved to get cut–last year they lost us games and had nothing much to contribute to a win.
Matt Gay choked on the short kicks and this talented team deserves better!

  45. JimmyJack Says:

Dare had a couple of clutch catches for us last year. Was the best receiving back on the roster and arguably the best blocker……To Joe’s point that is a testament to how brutal our backfield was.

I like the guy as a hard worker but no love lost to this cut. We are now upgraded with Fournette and McCoy on roster. We had a better chance to win now and that’s what matters.

  46. Buc4evr Says:

Dare will be back on the PS…and then find a way to work his way back on the roster…LOL. I bet they put Gay on the PS also…

  47. adam from ny Says:

    brady makes running back decisions…

he worked dare out during the off season…

when all is said and done, tom prolly felt he didn’t offer much since they bolstered up the running back room…

i for one, never saw dare make a single move once he caught a screen or short pass…he generally stuttered and then was tackled every single time…

    no juke no jive…

    means…

    no more dare…

he was kinda the bobo wilson of running backs…

i don’t really see him getting a spot in the league, unless we bring him back to the taxi squadron

  48. Buczilla Says:

    Thank goodness.

  49. Nick Houllis Says:

We went from Barber, Jones, Obiwankanobi, to Jones, Fournette, and Shady and our rookie? WOW. The Optimist signs off on these moves!!

  50. BucEmUp Says:

So the guy that was on the field more than any other rb last season got cut.

    Leftwich SUCKS!!!!!
