“He Told Me That, ‘You Know, They Ask My Advice, I Tell Them, And Then They Don’t Take It.'”

A Hall of Famer shares a conversation with Tom Brady

Tom Brady would like more influence.

That was the message today from another living-legend quarterback and Brady’s boyhood idol, Joe Montana.

Montana joined Mackenzie Salmon of USA Today Sports for a chat and she queried him about transitioning late in his career from the 49ers to the Chiefs.

“Going from Bill Walsh’s system for so long and then going to Kansas City and having to learn a whole new verbiage. Do you have any advice for Tom?” Salmon asked.

“My guess is [the Bucs] give him a little bit of opportunity in the offense to do things that they did [in New England,] Montana said of Brady. “I think that was one of his beefs up there [in New England]. He told me that, ‘You know, they ask my advice, I tell them, and then they don’t take it.’ So (laughs), I think he would like a little bit of input and I think they’ll probably let him have that, especially with the success he’s had.”

Hey, everyone quarterback wants to be heard. That’s not news. And Joe suspects Brady really wanted to be heard after a marathon career with one team and nine trips to the Super Bowl.

This all begs two questions:

How much will Bucco Bruce Arians and Byron Leftwich listen to Brady? (A helluva lot.) And will Brady’s input be more valuable than what the Bucs coaches have to offer?

I’m not sure I look at it as a competition between Brady, BA and Leftwich to see who ends up with the most input. I don’t even believe it’s the sum total of the knowledge that these guys bring to the table.

I think it’s more about the synergy of their thinking. Hopefully the sum will add up to even more than all the parts going into it.

I suspect everybody here has had a chance for athletic success at some level even if it’s only little league or high school. Perhaps you’ve had the fun of enjoying TEAM success and individual success…swimming..golf…track.

For me there is NO COMPARISON…athletically or even organizationally in business charity whatever…when it all comes together for the TEAM and EVERYBODY KNOWS they have a part to play and all the pieces fit together beautifully and synchronistically…it’s an INCREDIBLE FEELING…far better than simple individual achievement.

I have been blessed in 72 years to have been in two professional organizations…a job which wasn’t even a job because of being privileged to be on those two teams.

I think Brady..Gronk..Suh…and others are well aware of this special feeling and will convey it to the young Bucs.

  2. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

I think it’s standard operating procedure for most coaches, sans HUGE ego’s, looking at you Belichick, to accept input from their QB’s. Kinda like, “what 10 – 12 plays do you like against this defense we are going up against this Sunday?”

  3. BucDan Says:

In simple terms, the base passing offense might be:

    – Evans deep route
    – Godwin slot route
    – Miller quick route
    – Gronkowski seam route
    – RJ/Shady/Vaughn swing route

  4. Bucsfan Says:

I used to be a patriots fan and I could tell you this Brady hated Belichick ever since the benching of Butler in super bowl. Gisele hated living in New England. Tom Brady’s father hated Belichick. Brady is all in with Bucs and a championship in tampa will mean more to him and his family than any of the 6 in New England. All the negative talk of Brady wants control is nonsense.

Joe Montana is a jealous Brady hater dont let him full you. All Montana was worried about all off season was whether Brady would go to 49ers. Joe’s ego could not handle Brady going home on winning a super bowl. Montana is a fraud

  5. BucsFanForever Says:

I doubt that the Bucs brought Brady on, and paid him $50 million over 2 years, to ignore what he has to say. This is Brady’s offense now, and to be successful Arians and Leftwich need to tailor the offense to Brady’s abilities.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I think all three…..Brady, BA, BL will be very happy to accept what works on the field no matter who’s idea it is.

And, it really looks like Brady is driven to succeed. He knows the whole sports world and many others are watching and expecting it. Failure is not an option.

  7. Sarasota Garey Says:

Since Brady is the one throwing the ball, I guess hell have the final say in what plays we run.

  8. Rod Munch Says:

You give Brady anything he wants, if you’re not willing to do that then why would you bring him in? They have, at best, a 2-year window, so you go all in. Frankly I don’t think the Bucs have done nearly enough. They still have garbage at the 3rd WR spot – and that’s an incredibly important spot when you consider just this last year the team lost both of its starting WRs down the strech.

Nearly all NFL Head Coaches have a considerable Ego, and Arians is no exception.
I just hope that Arians will be able to put his Ego aside, and listen to Tom Brady.
This may be Tom Brad’s last hurrah, but it is also Arians last hurrah as well.
Sure, Arians wants to get to a Super Bowl, but like most coaches, he wants to get there HIS Way, running HIS Offense.
I don’t think he wants to hear in retirement “Arians never did shi*, until Tom Brady showed him how to win”.
I hope I am wrong, but I see the potential for a clash between Arians and Tom Brady.

  11. Dangeruss Says:

You must put this in context. TB12 played 19 seasons in NE. I don’t believe he wants anything but to win games & another ring!! Any input will be in Tom Brady fashion!! Respectful, helpful, & warranted! Tom takes hard coaching but has seen every play & wants to win here!!! Let’s Gooooooooooo!!

  12. Bucsgotachance..todonothing Says:

I still think we should sign Antonio Brown..bruce need to make nice and give tom his 3 targets get him in for training camp. 1 year prorared contract he will be valuable for the back end of the season

  13. AtlBuc Says:

Joe! Why do we have to compare the input? Whether it’s coming from Brady or the coaches it should all be valuable, Right?

  14. Joe Says:

    Who gets cut?

  15. PSL Bob Says:

I said many, many, months ago that Brady can truly secure his place as GOAT if he is able to secure the Tampa Bay franchise a trip to the Super Bowl. This franchise has wallowed in the depths of depression for so long, that a ticket to the SB in his first season with the BUCS would be solely attributed to Brady. Forget BA and the great weapons he has to work with. He would be credited with the success. It would also definitively answer the question of who was more responsible for NE’s success, Belicheat or Brady. God, would you love to see Belicheat’s reaction to Brady holding up the SB trophy for the Bucs, in Tampa no less?

  16. jmarkbuc Says:

    AB?

Hell no. He makes JW look like a Saint..no pun intended.

  17. Doc Says:

Hello offense cord, Head Coach, Tom Brady if you want to be in charge, go be a G.M. you are a player and you follow the coach advice like any other player.

  18. BucEmUp Says:

Lol If Leftwich ever pisses off Brady its Byron who would be packing his bags, not Brady!

  19. Clw JB Says:

He came here because BA has a solid rep for being a players coach in addition to unmatched WR/TE weapons by anyone else competing for his services

It’s going to be a group effort and after the W’s start stacking up, it really won’t matter who called what

  20. Anonymous Says:

What do ya wanna bet B. B. remembered all those times TB12 had something to say?

  21. geno711 Says:

    @Rod Munch

Depth is always a concern. Interesting to me you point out the 3rd receiver as an issue. It is fairly untested, I would agree. Yet the coaching staff really showed it could coach up guys quickly that were thrust into more important roles at that position.

They were running good routes, they were getting open. Sure two injuries again to Godwin and Evans would hurt our window opportunity. I am willing to give Scotty Miller another year and Tyler Johnson some chance before writing off the group.

Bucemup I guess yall looking for another scapegoat Leftwich will be the next scapegoat watch and see !!
