Happy Birthday, Tom Brady!
August 3rd, 2020Joe has been threatening to do this for some time. So Joe’s breaking down on the first Monday of August.
In any other year, Joe would likely be at One Buc Palace later this morning, large Dunkin’ Donuts coffee in hand, ready to sweat out yet another Bucs training camp practice.
But then The Sickness hit.
Yes, the Bucs are working out at One Buc Palace, but it is hardly a regular camp set up. The pads would already be on by now in previous years. The closest thing to normal training camp for the Bucs will begin Aug. 17.
Though you wouldn’t know it with the hype for the Bucs, if the Bucs make the playoffs, it will be NFL history.
Since Tom Brady was signed, Joe has made a big deal of the age for the park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring Bucs quarterback. He turns 43 today — happy birthday, Tom!
So why is Brady turning 43 such a hang-up for Joe? Well, per Pro-Football-Reference.com, since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, no starting quarterback 43 or older has guided a team to the playoffs.
In fact, the numbers for a 43-year old quarterback are really low-hanging fruit. Brady should at least set one record this year.
At age 43 in 1970, Raiders backup quarterback George Blanda came off the bench a few times to threw for six touchdowns that season. That’s the record. Blanda also had five picks.
At age 44, Vinny Testaverde, playing for the Stinking Panthers, threw for five touchdowns and six picks. He started six games that year, the most for a 44-year old QB since the merger.
If all things are equal, Brady should shatter the mark for touchdowns thrown by a 43-year old quarterback. So long as he stays upright.
Still, Joe is a history guy. And the history of dudes starting at quarterback who are seven year from qualifying for AARP membership is gnarly.
(A bit of background on that list: Don’t be fooled by the games-played for Blanda. For some reason, the search didn’t populate Blanda’s stats, which Joe knew was wrong. Then a light bulb went off. Joe included kickers in the search. Voila! Blanda’s name was included. He also was the Raiders’ kicker in his 40s. That’s why he appeared in all 14 games.)

Funny, he’s the same sign as Gronk’s mustache.

I’ve not seen much on the appearance of D. Smith reporting to training camp. That’s good news for the 43 year old.

Well hey, we had the 26 year old NFL leader in total offense, passing, passing yards per game, and # in TD’s
It’s a gamble, Brady has 6 rings, JW has all of the above plus 17 years to blossom.
No risk it No biscuit right? We shall see.

Old Man Brady is a rare dude and will be fine as long as he doesn’t get curb stomped behind our slightly (until proven otherwise) above average offensive line.
I see him making faster and better decisions than “out of sight, out of mind”, but is he even 1/10th as nimble? Gonna be fun to find out and if healthy, Brady can easily set all of the good single season Buc’s qb records with the weapons that we have. Mike’s putting up Tecmo Bowl numbers this year and slamming the book on Ira’s silly wide receiver rankings. 😜

Brady has never been 43 before now. So this record with also fall because that’s who he is.

Astute observation, no one has been any age until they are! Is Yogi Berra masquerading as Roy T on these boards?
And clean house, what’s your point here? Who led the league in pick 6’s and INTs? Stats are for losers. The Goat is on our ship scouring the seas for another ring. Get on board or walk the plank!

Blanda smoked a pack of cigarettes a day and drank regularly.

Joe you need to get over the age thing. For some folks its just a number. At 74 I am not supposed to still be working a 40 hour week still carrying and climbing ladders like the youngsters I work with, but I do. Its just a number.

What Brady’s body can’t do his mind will make up for it. He’s that good.

@Joe
Stop being rational. We are called JBFanatics for a reason.
“no starting quarterback 43 or older has guided a team to the playoffs.”
So like all the rest of us who make life altering decisions TB12 probably has several reasons. I would put this at the very top of his list!!!
Again…”no starting quarterback 43 or older has guided a team to the playoffs.”
That’s the real benchmark. SB’s require several things beginning with making the playoffs. Brady has scoreboard already. Would seven rings really make a larger impression than six? Yep if it’s with a different team! That might be second on his list. But SB’s also require luck…making the playoffs is a better rule of thumb to me anyway.
One huge advantage for TB12…money is not a major consideration. Yeah an SB in Tampa with the Bucs would make him the owner of the West Coast of Florida…but I honestly do not believe the $$$ are the big deal. He’s already worth more than a half BILLION! Actually that’s he and his wife who actually has earned more than TB12. Maybe that’s why TB12 is so anxious to branch out as an entrepreneur in several fields….his masculine ego want to earn more than Giselle LOL
