Bruce Arians’ Son Talks RoJo Vs. McCoy

So what are the Bucs really going to do at running back?

After the Bucs drafted two running backs and signed future Hall of Fame back LeSean “Shady” McCoy, Tampa Bay fans learned yesterday that ex-Bucs GM Mark Dominik doesn’t believe Bruce Arians’ claims that Ronald Jones is the man at the position.

But a man closer to Arians has a strong opinion, too. That would be Arians’ son Jake. The former NFL kicker co-hosts a fantasy football podcast for The Draft Network.

Jake Arians explained that he expects to see plenty of RoJo on third down because the Bucs will want to keep defenses honest, not because RoJo is a burgeoning third-down threat.

“I expect him to be more of a three-down guy because they don’t really want to give away what they’re doing,” Arians said of RoJo.

That’s the old LeGarrette Blount misguided mindset among Bucs fans in 2011.

There was a bitter and loud clan of fans who thought Blount had little value because he only seemed to be on the field on sure running plays, so therefore the Bucs were telegraphing their offense. Coaches wouldn’t throw Blount the football and the Bucs offense became too predictable, per some Bucs fans.

Meanwhile, Blount moved on to win three Super Bowls as a featured running back — ironically two with Tom Brady — but without really getting the ball thrown his way. It’s a Bucs life.

Regardless, the younger Arians said he expects McCoy to be the guy “in the shotgun” with Brady and a key cog in the offense. “You’re talking about Tom Brady’s pass catching running back,” he said.

    So I gather: if it’s 3rd and 11 – McCoy. If it’s 3rd and 4 – RoJo. What’s Dare’s down and distance (other than sp tms)? Vaughn’s?

  2. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Seems legit. I just got McCoy still has some speed. Maybe he contributes a lot early then when he wears down Jones and Vaughn can really step up.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    We’ll probably use them all…

I see McCoy and Dare as fourth quarter backs unless Rojo is still hot.

  5. PSL Bob Says:

Remember this guy Vaughn? Remember we drafted him this year. The guy has legit receiving skills. Once Buc’s coaches observe his quickness during training camp, the dude is going to have a role. However, the key for both Rojo and Vaughn is their blocking skills. They’ve got to be able to keep blitzing linebackers off Brady. If they can’t do that, their snaps are going to be limited.

  6. Hodad Says:

Even if he stays in on 3rd down to keep defenses honest, if he’s open he’ll get the ball even if it’s a pass play.

  7. Razor Ramone Says:

I always liked Blount, a big guy who could break off a 50 yard run but had trouble on the goal line. Drove Deumeg nuts.

    Coincidentally. Not ironically.

Rojo was not a bad reciever last year. Had a better catch % and more yards pee catch than our “recieving” back Dare. I think mccoy was brought in to relieve rojo and mentor him and vaughn. It will be hard to expect a lot out of rookies this year with this crazy offseason.

    This.

  11. Buddy Says:

Remind me again why you’re listening to a former free agent place kicker who never made it in the nfl and has zero coaching credentials talk about a position he knows nothing about??

  12. teacherman777 Says:

    Legit depth at RB!

Are the Patriots? They always run 4 deep.

We have depth! Good job Licht.

But we still have the most unathletic RG in the game. Cappa. smh.

  13. Leighroy Says:

Buddy, for better or for worse, the answer is in the first 3 words of the headline of this post.

    ______

Irony is the opposite of what’s expected. If Blount was truly limited,

  15. Brandon Short Says:

He wouldn’t have won three Super Bowls. That’s irony.

Jake seen saying this for awhile

  17. Oneilbucs Says:

man do any one honestly know how good RO JO is ? The only way we are going to know if they let him run the ball more than 10 times a game . He has to run the ball at least 23 times a game . And I’m not saying catching the ball . I’m talking about him running between the tackles or on some sweep plays .

  18. Sport Says:

    OMG – I’m in agreement with One-Ill.

Dude just got his man body. He was part boy when we drafted him.

    I hand the 🎤 to TBBF….

    In BA I Trust

We’ve got so many weapons that the opposing defenses will have to play Russian roulette, deciding who to leave one on one. That I think will be the reason all of our skill positions will have relative success when targeted this season. Because if there has always been one thing that I admired the most about Brady’s game is his ability to decipher defenses and call audibles. This will be the biggest deciding factor this season when comparing Brady to Winston. Which we know in the end we will undoubtedly get if Brady doesn’t reach 5000 yards.
