Alex Cappa Gets Most Improved Honor

August 31st, 2020

Third-year guard Alex Cappa, the returning starter at right guard.

If you want to know what’s happening with the Buccaneers offensive line, it’s a great idea to ask a defensive lineman.

Joe did that late this morning with Bucs returning veteran defensive tackle Rakeem Nuñez-Roches.

Nuñez-Roches has been lauded by Buccaneers coaches as the most improved player on the defense, so obviously he’s having a great camp. Joe asked him if he’s seeing a counterpart offensive line.

JoeBucsFan.com: What are you seeing from the offensive line this year that stands out to you, is there a guy you’re feeling in practice has stepped up his game?

Rakeem Nuñez-Roches: This is a tough one because I’m trying to beat everybody’s head in every day. A guy that’s stepped up his game (pause) I would have to say [Alex] Cappa.  Cappa has improved all around, as far as like what he has done as far as the run and pass. So if I had to say someone is stepping up, you know the other guys are pretty consistent … but all-around, just improving his game, I’d have to say Cappa.

Great, great, great, great to hear about Cappa, the 25-year-old plucked late in the third round out of Humboldt State by general manager Jason Licht in 2018.

Cappa was solid in his first season starting last year. If he can step up significantly, that’ll be one hell of a bonus for the line tasked with protected the most successful quarterback in NFL history, old man Tom Brady.

I’m still very concerned about our DEFENSE.

Our D had a few good games in the 2nd half of the season but most of them were against some pretty bad teams, even backup QBs.

Winfield should improve things in the secondary, but our corners were still getting consistently torched in a heavy passing league.

We’re going to be the Dallas Mavericks of the NFL. A great Offense but a defense that can’t really stop anyone and teams will just need to outscore us by taking advantage of our weak secondary.

Davis, Dean, Murphy-Bunting have had some ‘moments’ of great play, but overall as a secondary unit they’d been pretty bad.

Unless they turn the corner in a hurry, and play consistently, this team isn’t going be making a playoff run.

Really good to hear. Here’s hoping that Wirfs is a year one stud!

Should be a top 5-10 O-line with average health luck.

Great to hear about Cappa. Another sign of competent coaching. Growing young guys.

It wasn’t too long ago when Joe begged the organization not to draft ANY secondary players because the ‘Bucs’ couldn’t develop them.

Look at where we are now. The growth and development of these athletically gifted players is awesome! They are playing as one unit as well. Putting in the extra work. They were thrown into the fire, look at how they responded in the back half of the season!

Ivan do you consider a winner of their division a bad team? The Texans beat the Chiefs and Patriots last year. Look at these stats you walked by during your moment of over concerned.

    Watson (HOU), 32-19-184, 1 INT, 0 TD
    Hopkins (HOU), 5-23

Leading rusher was Watson with 37yds

That’s a team effort with nothing to play for!

    Go Bucs!

    In BA I Trust!

I still wonder if Cappa is a better fit at RT and Wirfs as RG?

DYK? Cappa played LT in college. He was named OL of the year in his conference all four years!

Most improved has always seemed to be a dubious honor for me……It means there was great room for improvement…..
Can you imagine Ali Marpet winning a “most improved” honor?

Nevertheless, it’s good to see Cappa improving…..we need it.

Or improved from what? So a guy improved from hideous to just plain bad? Joe likes Cappa and loves his toughness. Not everyone can be or should be expected to be an All-Pro. No shame in that.

just watched this interview on YouTube. Hey Joe, how your questions are audio only while others are on camera
    A) Lots of screenshot warriors out there who take great pleasure in harassing Joe maliciously.
    B) Joe finds that players/coaches do a better job answering the question when there’s less distraction from video and the question is direct.–Joe

    “Lol

    Cappa and Dope Smith suks

These 2 will get TB12 injured

Saints DC Dennis Allen going to blowup that Oline”

To think..he began looking like a bouncer in a nightclub in Charleston, Il….which for those of you that don’t know Illinois in general but know the St. Louis region, it is much like the tougher clubs in East St. Louis. And now he is a man with mad skills. Congratulations Alex…and keep grinding.

  14. Nick2 Says:

Makes people wonder why Koetter kept him on the bench like a bust. Koetter might have cooked his own goose not playing Rojo or Cappa. Neither really saw the field that year.

  15. TLC Says:

Doesn’t surprise me at all. Watched him 4 years at Humboldt. He is always working on his game. Nice guy on top of it.

  16. Buczilla Says:

All kinds of good news today on Joebucs. 😃

  17. WhatTheBuc Says:

Ivan, if you can’t see young players that are becoming defensive stars in this league, you might want to lose the “insider” moniker. Unless you mean your head is inside your ass.

  18. teacherman777 Says:

    Solid?!

He was horrible! We had the 30th ranked rushing attack!

Jameis avoided 20 more sacks last year and our RB’s were constantly hit in tje backfield.

Solid? He was a horrible! One of the worst guards in the NFL.

    Ask PFF.

  19. Joe in Michigan Says:

Cappa is better than Caleb “Cannot Block” Benenoch.

  20. Buccfan37 Says:

Excited to see Cappa hold his own and then some. Bust em Cappa.
