Shaq Shut Out

July 19th, 2020

Snubbed.

For those Bucs fans who felt NFL sack king Shaq Barrett was slapped in the face when he wasn’t named first-team All-Pro last season, get a load of this.

Over at BSPN, Jeremy Fowler cobbled together a panel of 50 NFL suits, scouts, coaches and players to come up with a Top-10 list at every position.

Recently, the four-letter produced its list of top edge rushers. You would think that the guy who led the league in sacks (19.5), who just set a team’s franchise record, previously held by a Hall of Fame defensive tackle, would be somewhat highly-ranked, no?

No.

Not only was Shaq not highly ranked, he’s not ranked at all! Not even honorable mention. Nope, no Shaq to be found anywhere on the list.

Could this simply be that NFL people want to see Shaq follow up his career year with a strong double-digit sack effort this fall? Very likely. That’s also very likely why Shaq and the Bucs haven’t (yet) been able to hammer out a long-term deal.

Joe doesn’t think there is anything wrong with wanting to see Shaq rack up more sacks to make sure he is not a one-year wonder. But man, a guy nearly has 20 sacks and he cannot even get honorable mention as one of the NFL’s better edge rushers?

Sad!

    It’s a bucs life!

  3. Sanford Salzman Says:

Buccaneers are like Rodney Dangerfield, they just don’t get respect.

  4. Bucsfanman Says:

I challenge anyone to find me a “one-year wonder” who had 19.5 sacks. Injuries aside.
19.5 sacks is not a fluke. Guys don’t get THAT “lucky”!
He’s on a bad football team.

  5. David Says:

They really need a long-term deal with him. With the talent and defense getting better, I see him getting 12 or more sacks again. If that happens, the price tag goes up. Right now they have the leverage of “you’ve only done it once but we will do a deal anyway”

  6. MadMax Says:

Dont mistake the JPP factor, without him, Shaq was pretty much shutdown. And without big V and Suh clogging the middle, he wouldn’t get too far. Its a team effort. Thats why we better spend a 1st and 2nd next year on D line….Dt and edge to keep up the pressure.

  7. DoooshLaRue Says:

    MadMax,

Shaq had 9 sacks while JPP was out.
9 sacks in 7 games is not too shabby is it?

  8. MadMax Says:

^ Oh really….maybe I read some fake news then….i just remember all the stuff about how he wasnt that effective while JPP was out, then when he came back, Shaq blew up. I need to check my stats…my bad.

  9. MadMax Says:

Yep, 9 sacks, then was shutdown the last two games before JPP came back…so yeah theres something still some validity. 4 sacks in that NY game really helped with those 9. He’s still our sack king though, just needs to turn it up a little more in the 2nd half of the season.

  10. Formerly Tampa 2 Says:

Given the Bucs Reputation for the last 10 years no National Media type is going to give any Buc the recognition that they should deserve. But this year will hopefully change that reputation due to our newest player additions. No need to Name anyone because Everyone’s eyes will be on the Bucs this year. Our current sack king, a receiver, and a certain linebacker will hopefully shine this year and get the recognition they deserve.

  11. BucEmUp Says:

    Its the Bucs

  12. Don_RyJo(e) Says:

So this must mean that Jeremy Fowler at BSPN doesn’t have any rookies on any of his Position Top 10 lists, right? I mean, if only having a single year of insane-top-of-the-NFL production isn’t enough proof to be mentioned, then how could any rookie meet that criteria?

Unless players lose a bunch of points just for wearing a Bucs uniform.

  13. SB Says:

I read all those articles too Joe. I was SHOCKED when he didn’t even get mentioned. It’s a Bucs’ life!

  14. donuts Says:

I dont put stock in any list where the people that make the list are not brave enough to put their name on it. 50 people off the street has the same value. If we ranked the execs, coaches and scouts who made this list what would their ranking be?

  15. Youngbucs Says:

Seriously who cares nobody can take away what he did. And nobody can control what he will do it’s all in his hands. I’m rdy for football!!!

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If it drives him to prove them wrong, I’m in favor of it.

  17. stpetebucsfan Says:

This is one time when Shaq could go all JW and say check yo sheets!

    19.5 is 19.5!!! Beyond exceptional…record setting.

There is NO doubt that Shaq benefited from the overall strength of our front seven and especially JPP. He doesn’t get close to twenty without Vea, Suh and most importantly JPP.

So he only gets 11 or 12. Is that now chump numbers? Ask yourself this…if you had to place a bet would you take Shaq gets a dozen sacks this year or he gets five?

  18. Mort Says:

Make a good playoff run and they’ll all get respect. Just how it goes.

  19. PSL Bob Says:

This is just gross incompetence on the part of the panel. I can see perhaps ranking him at the bottom of the top 10, because so far, he’s just a one-year wonder. But to not even make honorable mention, that’s nuts!

  20. Youngbucs Says:

If he was a rookie top draft pick and had 19.5 sacks they would say he’s a hof lol.

  21. Beej Says:

He was technically a LB, how did he do on his OTHER LB-type stuff?

  22. bucfan34 Says:

Shaq will blow up again… At least 15 sacks! L. David been killin it for years in Tampa but is also slighted by everyone outside of BucNation!!

  23. Buczilla Says:

I don’t have much respect for espn or the majority of it’s writers, personalities, agenda, etc., so without knowing which 50 Fowler contacted, how can we be sure that they were being objective? Leaving the sack leader off the list is ignorant as all hell even if he did play for the Bucs.

I get why the Joe’s subscribe to espn+, but espn would have to pay me to read their trash and stupid lists. 😜
