Shaq And Trey Flowers Money

July 7th, 2020

So how much money does sackmaster linebacker Shaq Barrett want from the Buccaneers on a long term deal?

Former NFL player agent Joel Corry thinks a guy who had just seven sacks last year is a good barometer for the deal Shaq seeks.

Corry typed up a piece for CBS Sports about how none of the 14 franchise-tagged players this offseason have signed a long-term deal. Yeah, it’s a strange year.

Corry thinks Shaq’s market might be around $18 million annually — about $2 million more than the 2020 tag rate. That’s what that seven-sack guy signed for a year ago, Trey Flowers of the Lions.

Nobody could have foreseen Barrett having a league-leading 19.5 sacks in 2019. The 2014 undrafted free agent produced a total of 14 sacks in his previous four seasons with the Broncos. A long term deal for Barrett might be comparable to the $18 million per year with the $40 million fully guaranteed at signing Trey Flowers got from the Lions in free agency last March. COVID-19 aside, any reluctance on making a long term commitment to Barrett would be understandable because of his limited track record for producing at the highest level. Barrett indicated he will sign his $15.828 million franchise tender if an agreement on a long term deal can’t be reached.

There’s that “track record” line again. It’s common among the very loud make-Shaq-earn-it crowd.

That’s understandable, but Shaq still will command a fortune even if he drops from 19 1/2 sacks last year to 11 1/2 this season. A rule you can count on in the NFL: established pass rushers under 30 get paid handsomely. Departed Carl Nassib even scored $8 million per year on a multiyear deal from Chucky in March.

With Jason Pierre-Paul getting old and dealing with injuries, and Shaq, 27, being the only other strong edge rusher on the roster, Joe would not hesitate to give Shaq a long term deal now.

Joe also is fine making Shaq wait, but another Pro Bowl-like season might have him fielding monster offers near $20 million annually, and the Bucs have little cap room.

    In THAT order.

    GO BUCS!!

Probably should get a deal done. He would be worth the premium price even if he only got 11 sacks. He is still incredibly disruptive. Also Joe Michael Bennet’s best year here he got 10 sacks and you never stop talking about letting him go.

Can’t we just franchise him again?

Flowers is paying roughly 1 mil in taxes to Michigan
    Just sayin

……….nobody knows if Shaq is a “one time wonder”

I suspect he’ll get significantly less sacks this season due to offenses now game-planning to stop his rushing attack

…..and Shaq knows this and is trying to cash in all of his chips now

  6. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Pay the man. It’s monopoly money anyway.

  7. SB Says:

Today there are pics of TB12 and his son on 4 wheelers somewhere up here on the top of a mountain.

  8. SB Says:

TB12 tryin’ to squeeze in all the fun he can right now in the midst of all this uncertainty. Can’t blame him.

  9. Joe in Michigan Says:

If JPP is healthy on the other side, they’ll both get their sacks, IMHO. Especially if the Bucs are playing with leads, teams forced to pass late in games.

    SB,
It’s better than what MeJax was doing today…

    Soooooooo Loooooong MeJax

  11. Buczilla Says:

18 seems reasonable, but I’m cool if we wait until after this season to sign him as well.

Just wondering something. After seeing the insane (good for him) $ that Patrick Mahomes just got, is it even worthwhile to have a franchise quarterback if he is not in the top 5? Inevitably, someone like Dak or Watson are going to try to “one up” this deal and I think that they are far lesser players. My guess is that we are heading towards a point where the quarterbacks simply won’t count against the cap.

I am a huge fan of long contracts with injury escape clauses. GO BUCS!!!

  13. Ship Thief Says:

Buczilla… I often find myself thinking the same thing.

If you don’t have a top 5 (for me it’s top 4) qb, meaning, you just absolutely KNOW that your qb is going to get you deep into the playoffs…
It would seem insane to pay that kind of money…

It seems even crazier to do such a long contract to me.

But in this case, with Mahomes, the numbers are mind-blowing for sure… but in 5 years it probably won’t seem so crazy ($ per year).
I’m guessing Lamar will get something similar when he gets his next contract. (30-35 mil per year)

If your results on the field actually are paying the salaries of an entire industry, then I’d say that it is money well earned.

  14. Buczilla Says:

    Good points Ship Thief.

  15. Godlovesbucs Says:

Ship Thief, i do agree with the point yoj are making, but top 4 seems pretty narrow to make that point. So who would be the 4 you would pay top dollar long term to and who would you let go?? I agree with the idea, but i think the list may be a litter bigger than top 4.

Having star QBs spend most if not all of their careers with one team is good for the league. At some point the league needs to remove QB contacts from the salary cap totals. Unless they want to have 25 teams or more only keeping QBs around for a couple of years. Part of the reason baseball is not as big as it once was is because star players can’t stay and become heroes for smaller market teams like the Rays. I know my interest in the Rays faded when they let Price walk and later on Longoria. If you want fans engaged you need to have star players to stay and be icons for both older and younger fans.

  17. Lamarcus Says:

Yes pay him and he should give JPP half of it because he would NOT be here today without JPP

Barrett went on a early run and then got shut down to irrelevancy until JPP returned. That alone will have me hesitate no matter how ppl feel

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Paying Shaq is a good argument to have considering we haven’t had a pass rusher to pay other than JPP lately……

  19. SB Says:

So basically half his sacks came with JPP Lamarcus
    and
half his sacks came without JPP

    Hmmmmm

  20. Cainishere Says:

That is what I mean by HOF Defense.
Because of the incredible strength of the D-Line and LB.
Most could be in the HOF. They need a couple of SuperBowls.
It happens because they feed off of each other and make each other better.
Perfect Season, #1 Defense GO BUCS!!!

  21. Ship Thief Says:

    Godlovesbucs,
You’re probably right. It’s not just the top 4, but I think we can agree that this is guys within the top 10 we are talking about.

Beyond that, this is all about guys that were top 10 last year, will also be next year… and if the gamble pays off… top 10 for 10 years.

  22. Cainishere Says:

The Buccaneer 5 from 2002 consisted of Rice, Sapp, Brooks, Barber and Lynch.
Today’s defensive team stars are the entire defense.
    GO BUCS!!

  23. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Buczilla and Ship Thief

Great debate! I don’t know where the cutoff is but I agree with you guys basic concept that at some point a QB is simply not worth what the top four or five guys commands.

Mahomes is truly special. Jackson maybe…Rodgers…there are not that many guys who can truly carry a team. There are quite a few who can win with the right team…they can be an integral part of a team but they’re not really the straw that stirs the drink.

I wish D.R. was around because he gives a lot of thought to the cap and cap balance. I wonder how he feels about cap distorting salaries going to QB’s.

  24. Craig Says:

If he gets 5-6 six sacks in the first four games, I would start to discuss it. At the moment he is still a one hit wonder that now has all of his moves on tape.

If he can still juke offensive linemen consistently he will be good for over ten sacks this season. The Bucs need that, just because it has been a long time since we had that.

  25. Mort Says:

Joe – better check your math again. They ha e loads of room next year. They also have a lot of expiring contracts. Not all of them need to be brought back. Suh, for example.

  26. Jean Lafitte Says:

With this virus looming it’s going to start affecting teams financials and no owner is going to want to start hemorrhaging money on a sports team. So I don’t see how they would even offer Shaq 20 million a year when the salaries are in danger of retracting, not expanding.

  27. Joe Says:

Joe – better check your math again. They ha e loads of room next year.

Not if the cap drops which is expected.

  28. Bucball Says:

this guy proved he is elite — great hands, great feet, a bunch of different rushes and combos. That aint no fluke. Thats 5 years of hard work. So easy w the prove it stuff. He did.

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’m fine with him playing for the tag this year…just to make sure he isn’t a one year wonder.

  30. lokog Says:
