Report: Players Don’t Want 11-On-11 Work In Training Camp

July 5th, 2020

Always remember that the NFL is a business.

Owners care about owners. Players care about players, and everything flows downhill from there.

The latest eye-opener in the NFL’s wrestling match with the players union to determine how training camp will be handled in the midst of The Sickness is, per ProFootballTalk.com, is players don’t want 11-on-11 football activities whatsoever until games are played.

The union also wants limited practices and group activities in the days leading up to travel and games, with restrictions applying as of Thursday of a given week, in order to permit accurate testing and to limit transmission of the virus.

Florio further explains that players are looking at limiting as much health risk as possible — while still clinging to their paychecks.

Remember when Tiki Barber talked about an “unwatchable” product?

Joe’s all in favor of player safety, but games without real practices are a tough concept to swallow. Of course, players can always gather on their own time.

Joe’s getting a vision of Tom Brady building his own Field of Dreams on a few abandoned acres in Ruskin.

The players association trying to entirely emasculate football.

  2. Cainishere Says:

I have a completely different view on this exact story that should be pointed out.
Team 1 offense should not face team 1 defense. Just saying. Have your first string vs 2nd. To me I want both of my units to have high morale.
Pitting 1st vs 1st will be destructive.
    GO BUCS!!

  3. Clean House Says:

    There will be no season.

    Happy 4th!

  4. Stanglassman Says:

I’ve said since March that if there is no season it will be because the players. Players not agreeing with NFL over health concerns. Players are the ones at risk, not the brass or owners.

  5. BigHog Says:

“The forth of July is yours not mine!”

  6. Tampabuscsbro Says:

There seems to be a minority of people in here whether they be jaded fans, Trolls, or something else that want to see nothing else but for this team to go down in flames.

  7. Elias Says:

There are so many fans that have wiped their hands of the NFL. There are many that are also on the cusp of saying I’m done!

  8. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The nfl should not even negotiate. The cba is signed. Make the players play.

  9. REDZONE BA Fan Says:

There absolutely WILL be an NFL 2020 season – Follow the MONEY! No way will NFL owners forfeit all that TV money for a pandemic. Fans-in-stands is icing on their money cake, so if fans cannot attend games – no issue – income loss of fan attendance is just a flesh wound in owners’ $$$ coffers.

And if star players (QB’s) are quarantined for two weeks, fans will still tune in to watch with even greater interest to see how teams’ adjust. Players negotiating today for pre-season practicing rules, that’s great for now. Once the season begins, rules will bend. The product will not be “unwatchable” but will be interesting.

  10. Pryda...sec147 Says:

    Give a refund Bucs!

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It’s not as much the 11 on 11 or any other on-field activity that puts the players at risk…..it’s what they do off-field and who they come in contact with….the players will be tested.
And, I agree…….they will at least try to have the season…$5billion is too much to walk away from. We’ll learn a great deal from how TC goes.

  12. Georger Says:

I agree TBfan. If players monitor what they do away from one Buc with proper monitoring there should not be spread. There should be pre-season games, there should be 11 on 11. If players don’t feel safe they can opt-out.

  13. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    HA HA HA HA HA

    No team practice…….we get it

We also get that there will be n ok NFL season this year either

Good job greedy selfish millionaires NFL players

  14. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

You know what, I am getting pretty sick and tired of this. Why not scrap the season and NONE of the players get a paycheck? Let’s see how they like that.

  15. Hartr70 Says:

The best thing they could do now is practice all together NOW! They are not going to die from the disease no matter what CNN, MSNBC, or Fox tells you!! Did they shut down last year in which players had flu like symptoms? Did they call the game off when Jordan was on the court with a fever? It’s part of life, believe it or not you have an immune system that has to come in contact with a new virus or bacteria. And to add to this, the test depending on which one you use will show false positives

  16. mark2001 Says:

I get it… the attempt is to limit the spread now, so we don’t have a huge number of players come down with the virus, and put pressure on the NFL from the health agencies, government, and the players association to shut the season down. As I said… the NFL Inc. is doing all they can to preserve the season. And some just can’t see it…very unfortunate.

  17. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    EXACTLY SCOTTY^^^^^^^^

These greedy NFL PLAYERS doesn’t realize millions or Americans are outta work or will never get there jobs back and they’re complaining about practice????

  18. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Has anyone really missed not having baseball, NHL, NBA?

    I miss all three.

  20. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

I’d love to see a poll or two on what sport people have missed. I’m sure all of these greedy players have been practicing social distancing, wearing a mask, etc. while away from team facilities, not working out, etc. Hypocrites.

  21. Jerry Says:

That’s fine. Just reduce their pay accordingly.

I have no sympathy. All these essential workers like grocery store workers, gas station workers, food service workers, etc are risking their lives for very little pay. Meanwhile these babies in pro sports are all crying they may get exposed for doing their jobs and making millions.

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The players can choose their salary…..millions….or they can join the rest of us in the unemployment line for their $600 per week……we’ll see what choice is made.

  23. mark2001 Says:

Hey…it is a free country. If they have the skills to make enough money to take a year off, and collectively tell us to watch johnny scrub aka johnny football play QB for the Bucs if we insist on the team playing, why would you have a problem with that? And if they are still better than anyone a year from now on the street at their position, and we bring them back with a raise, what is the problem? Personal freedom. Watch figure skating or reruns of happy days instead if you wish. It is a free country.

  24. mark2001 Says:

Jerry..the salaries are set based upon the marketplace. It is called capitalism. And if the owners collectively want to cut their salaries, the player can start their own league. Then the owners will have to compete with them all as FA’s, and the salaries will be bigger than they are today…or they can hire scrubs like me and probably you. Free choice.

  25. bucsfaninoregon Says:

You deniers of obvious facts in your face can bloviate all you want about “They are not going to die from the disease no matter what CNN, MSNBC, or Fox tells you!!”
I guess the ~4,000 deaths IN FLORIDA in the last four months don’t count. These are people who have died because they caught the virus. You want to tell those 300 pound black players that there is no problem- -saddle up!
What confuses me is if Fox News and MSNBC agree there is a problem where is HARTR70 getting his “evidence” otherwise- – a MAGA crystal Ball?

  26. Buc1987 Says:

Have you guys not seen the commercial on Fox?

Baseball is coming back July 25th.

    Football will be back too.

    There will be a season.

  27. SOEbuc Says:

OMFG. Like the government the NFL is doing everything they can for money. I just threw up in my mouth and swallowed it and I’m not sick.

  28. orlbucfan Says:

  30. stpetebucsfan Says:

    REDZONE

Largely agree with your post although I lack your certainty. Certainly the $$$ lead one to believe there will be a season.

I also believe the medicine is finally BEGINNING to catch up to the NOVEL virus.
Treatments are just as effective as getting a vaccine.

Meanwhile REDZONE you made some excellent points in there. I’ve been wondering how the league will do with a two week loss of a star? I think you have something there that it will just be another added situation to judge the coach and people will tune to see how teams handle it.

Here is perhaps a much smaller risk with a larger effect. Yes young people fare better but they are not bulletproof when it comes to the Covid. What happens if somebody dies? Coaches more likely because of age of course but there are no guarantees for all of the players either. In addition about 20% of survivors have life lasting health issues.

Meanwhile…whatever happened to…”It’ll disappear in April with the heat?”
We clearly are still learning about the virus. NO heat does not seem to discourage it if your record setting numbers indicate anything.

  31. SOEbuc Says:

And I believe Joe mentioned at some point in the past that has any kind of ink in contracts about playing in a epidemic so I think the union has everything in their pockets if they would want a season. If I were a player I wouldn’t want a season.

And you’re crazy if you think every player in the NFL is sitting on the top of billions of dollars.

  32. bojim Says:

What’s wrong with players caring about their health? I hope there’s a season but these guys are the game and they need to be careful about risking their health and possibly their careers. When the hitting starts more than a handful of cases are going to hit anyway but why not try to keep it down?

  33. Anonymous Says:

It pains me to say this but if you don’t like it here Big Hog, you’re welcome to find a better place to live

  34. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

In all the hysteria of the virus, people have forgotten that an estimated 50-80% of people exposed to Covid19 are asymptomatic. For the most part, these athletes should all have excellent immune systems. They are likely to have already had exposure to the virus and been asymptomatic. If they haven’t been exposed, it would be better to get exposed before the season begins. We need to end all this fear nonsense for a virus that has mostly only killed sick elderly people, with a majority in nursing homes.

  35. Cgmaster27 Says:

@bucsfaninoregon the death rate is .025 dude. Yeah noone wants to see anyone die, but 3 times as many people will die from the flu this year. But you keep fearmongering and live in your little scared hole. The rest of us will live on.

  36. mark2001 Says:

SOE…you bet it is Capitalism. Free markets. You don’t want to work during a pandemic and you have a skill that makes you among the best in the world, it is your right. And if you have the power to stick the league, the owners, and the fans if they try to stick you by cutting your pay or risking your life, you have the right. And they have the right to pay to see you after the pandemic is over because you are the best in the world..or not. That is why some get paid chump change and others make fortunes. It is about your skills and the wages you can command. Nothing more, nothing less. Same thing in all areas of entertainment and commerce.

Sad so many have no idea what Capitalism or Socialism really is. But in America, you also have the right to be as uninformed as you choose as well.

  37. mark2001 Says:

Jeebs…these linemen are very susceptible. They weigh far more during their playing days that they should in normal life. That is why guys like Brad Culpepper weigh 50 plus pounds less than they did during their playing days. He is a smart guy and probably wants to live to a ripe old age. And people that are overweight are at higher risk in this pandemic, whether it is muscle or fat. The nonsense we need to stop is uninformed speculation, and listen to the medical experts.

  38. DoooshLaRue Says:

Quarantine all NFL players, coaches and referees in a nice hotel for the season.
NO outside contact for the season.

I’ve been quarantined on my vessel (merchant Mariner) for 2 months now and probably have another 2 months to go….. but I’m getting paid.
If we can do it then the millionaires can certainly do it too.

How badly do you want your money ladies?

  39. mark2001 Says:

BTW Anthem…they aren’t out of work because they are the best in the world at what they do. If they weren’t they would be unemployed immediately. No job security in the NFL. And if they end up with heart or other medical problems because of the virus, their career is over.

It is sad that millions are unemployed… No one has a right to job security… or a job. It is what it is. It’s unfortunate, but that is why it wise to always be updating ones skills, looking to the future for your fit in emerging industries, and keeping ones resume updated. And save for a rainy downpour.

  40. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

It’s funny how people who don’t have any skill set to play in the NFL call the players greedy but yet billionaire owners are 10x greedier! These players deserve the money they get because this is a free market society and the NFL is the best and most exciting professional sports league there is. It makes the money it does because the best players play not scrubs and that’s what the people pay to watch. People shouldn’t reduce these guys willingness to get sick just because they make a lot of money. From what I’ve heard the sickness will knock anybody on their butt.

  41. bucsfaninoregon Says:

Doose, you are half right. If the NFL isolated ALL members of an NFL squad then there would be a possibility of games.
Where you are wrong is the idea that 100+ players and staff, most are young, semi-rich, and healthy. Tell those guys no wife, kids, GF, parents, pets, etc. from September through December with zero exceptions. That’s what won’t happen.
CG, you focus only on the death rate (which is questionable with Florida’s massaged data). There are plenty of reports of after effects of recovered people and bad news recoveries.
And, for the rest of you followers of the Dear Leader, the London Blitz lasted about as long as the virus has been here in the US. Britain lost 40,000+ civilians during that period. And, they are still talking about it. So far “under his leadership” we have lost three times as many- -and we are just getting started. Only question is whether in 75 years they will still be talking about the number of deaths OR how many ignored science and pretended it’s business as usual. Just think, you deniers may make the history books.

  42. mark2001 Says:

DavidBig…exactly. You’re among the best at things in demand…Doctor, Surgeon, Architect, Lawyer, Athlete, Singer, Mechanic, and you can demand top dollar. And no amateur or less has the right to tell you what you can or can’t do or how much money you should make… unless you contract otherwise. Why do people think they have the right to endanger the health of others by being irresponsible, but when it comes to someone entertaining them with their skills, they should Kowtow to their wishes? That is bizarre.

  43. BA Redzone Says:

    STPETEBUCSFAN

    AGREE and great points!

In addition about 20% of survivors have life lasting health issues.

Meanwhile…whatever happened to…”It’ll disappear in April with the heat?”
We clearly are still learning about the virus. NO heat does not seem to
discourage it if your record setting numbers indicate anything.

I’m relatively healthy yet taking serious precautions (social distancing and wearing mask, and other precautions) because of potential lasting health consequences. Scientist are learning more everyday, as example, that blood type is surfacing as potential predictor of COVID impact.

And right on – about the “heat fallacy”. We are learning more every day but far away from a vaccine, and all the “COVID is no different than flu” crowd may change their tune in next 6 months pending personal experience. My grumpy know-it-all, people-are-over-cautious-for-no-good-reason neighbor did a 180 after he got sick from COVID. He will tell you he is still not right. Oh, and my wife is a clinical leader at a large Health system. Sad stories for senior patients, but also gen x’ers. And that young group infection rate is rapidly rising, and when they end up in hospital, they are just as sick as seniors.

Tip of the hat to essential workers who are exposed every day serving the rest of us. Would be amazing if people in our great country could be selfless and wear a mask, regardless of personal beliefs > Could prevent unnecessary deaths and help get people back to work faster. Infection Results in next 3 weeks (post July 4) from the I don’t care crowd, tired of being pent up crowd, may wake them up, like it woke up my neighbor.

As for the Bucs, they are same as 31 other teams who are facing the same challenges, except we have advantage of Our levitating GOAT QB, who will perform fine, regardless of preseason practice sessions.

  44. lowercaseg Says:

just suspend the league already so everyone loses and we can move onto the eventual civil war.

  45. mark2001 Says:

Civil war? lowercaseg..is that you Vlad Putin? Only he would even suggest a civil war. Russia and China wins, and we all lose. No thanks. You would think we would all have learned from the last civil war. I guess not.

  46. Seminole Bill Says:

Move the 2020 season start date back to January 2021. Play for 3 months, then resume play in September 2021. Combine the win/lost and have playoffs start in January 2022, Super Bowl in March 2022. It is too dangerous to have fans in stands in 2020 until this virus is under control.

Or: no fans in stands and start this September.

  47. Anonymous Says:

We all learn in school that viruses kill tens of thousands of people in America each year, but NOW we should wear a mask? If we were serious about saving lives and controlling the spread of diseases, we would always wear a mask, no matter what. Gloves, masks, and no crowds. Outside gatherings only when social distancing can occur. This will save lives from all diseases, not just Covid-19. Sports stadiums are one of the worst places you could go if you want to remain virus-free. If society really cared about saving lives we would all watch sports on TV, or just shut all sports down that require contact. All schools should be online only, no matter the taxpayer cost. We can’t have these infections, right?

“It’s funny how people who don’t have any skill set to play in the NFL call the players greedy but yet billionaire owners are 10x greedier!”

Owners do/did a lot more to earn their money. Players have one job. Owners have many. And let’s not forget: if not for the owners, there would be no NFL. Players can be replaced.

  51. mark2001 Says:

Bonzai… I see it as the players need the owners and the owners need the players. And if the owners were substantially more powerful in the process than the players, the owners would have broken the union some time ago. They need each other…and they know it.

From a financial perspective, I wish I had had the relatively small number of millions almost fifty years ago to own a franchise. As Hugh showed us, you can hire staff to do most jobs for you, low ball salaries, and watch the value of your franchise skyrocket just by owning the team, while making a profit every year, regardless of the success of the team. Hugh paid 16 mil for the franchise. And during those painful years, the Bucs were the most profitable franchise in the league for much of that period. He sold it to Malcolm for 192 mil. From a financial point of view…genius.

  52. mark2001 Says:

BTW..I’m not knocking the Glazers; they are financial genius’s. too. Current worth of the Bucs…about 2.2 billion dollars. Honestly, I can’t even imagine that kind of money.

The real problem we have is we have a old quarterback that can’t afford to miss a season . The hold covid thing I’m starting to put up some red flags about it . It wasn’t this many people going to bars and the beach . I live in Texas and I watch the news and our bars in Houston was not full at all and most of our restaurants were still close despite of the opening of my city . And now it seems like every one that gets tested is coming back positive . So I’m not going to say it’s not true about the cases but I have to question some of this stuff .
