Johnson = Godwin?

July 7th, 2020

Physical receiver.

Now it is not fair for a rookie third-day draft pick to be compared to arguably the best NFL receiver, but there seems to be a similarity.

The Bucs could have Chris Godwin 2.0 on the roster. And that would be rookie Tyler Johnson.

Now the Bucs haven’t even had an organized practice yet thanks to “The Sickness” — 2020 offseason programs were totally wiped out.

And who knows what training camp will look like? Just yesterday NFL head coaches were in a conference call with the league on the protocols for training camp.

The Bucs are scheduled to open camp on July 28.

So what is Joe getting at? It’s maybe a big-time reach to already anoint Johnson as the next Godwin. We don’t even know if he can catch passes from park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring Bucs quarterback Tom Brady.

What we do know about Godwin, who was a steal in the third round by Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht, is that he was a physical receiver playing for a B1G school (Penn State) in college. That has certainly translated to his NFL career. And just judging by stats, Johnson is not scared of being physical, either.

While playing for a B1G school at Minnesota, per the PFF tribe, no one in college football was better at hauling in contested catches in the red zone. Again, per the tribe, Johnson led college football with six contested receptions in the red zone last year.

For Joe, that’s certainly a good sign for the Bucs.

I watched both. They were both great in college. Tyler dropped easy passes, Godwin didn’t. They both caught difficult passes and in traffic. Godwin is faster.

Godwin is better than Johnson but Johnson can be a good #3.

Johnson will be learning from the best QB and receiver tandem in the NFL. They will make him better. Tom Brady demands perfection. If they can get the running game even 50% better, they may be unstoppable. I see Warner with the greatest show on turf but better.

Slow your roll, @JBF. The sickness will stall Johnson success. Dude is awesome,,,,,give him a time next year.

If he develops, would that make Evans or Godwin expendable? Hard to think the bucs can afford both. Either would make pretty good trade bait.

  7. Craig Says:

If Brady is still close to as accurate as he has been, we might not see the best of Godwin or Johnson this season.

We will see lots of production and lots of yards, just not as many circus catches.

Both Johnson and Godwin were the victims of less than accurate QBs last season. They made the best of it and showed their skill.

It will be nice to know that they have those skills, they won’t be as necessary thise year.

    LMFAO

Licht has one hell of a knack for finding good receivers, so I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Johnson ends up being at least serviceable. Hopefully, at least one of his running back picks makes some noise this year too. 😛

I think Kobe is a troll but I laughed my ass off at that! : )
