Simms: Tom Brady = Average Starter

June 14th, 2020

“How bout I freakin’ rank you, Simms. Then you can go cry to your daddy. Why don’t you text Griese and ask for an optometrist referral.”

For Joe, this evaluation of Tom Brady is all about perspective and upgrades, not reality.

Joe has immense respect for Chris Simms, the former Bucs quarterback and Patriots assistant coach who now works for NBC Sports.

Anyone who listens to Simms regularly knows he puts in the work when it comes to evaluating players and brings a depth of knowledge that is hard to find, especially about quarterback play.

His annual QB rankings are in full swing, and Simms placed Brady at No. 15 overall, a slot better than Drew Brees. Simms sees a Brady who is a little too into self-preservation.

“If Brady was a top five or top 10 quarterback in football still, New England wouldn’t have let him go,” Simms said, via WEEI radio transcription. “Teams don’t let go of top 10 quarterbacks. … I would like to reiterate like I did with Drew Brees, Tom Brady is still good enough to where he can win a Super Bowl. … His arm is still real good. Is it great like it used to be? No, but it is still real good where he can make all the throws everywhere around the field. His ability to dissect and read and react to a defense and make the proper throw, it’s genius. He is like Van Gogh at the quarterback position. He is an artist

“His pocket awareness is a little too aware right now. He is a little reluctant to want to stand in there and make throws down the field. He left some yards and plays on the field during the season and that is why he is No. 15. If he will stand in there and he is willing to take shots, he can still make big-time game-changing type throws, but I would also say again there is reluctance.”

Rank Brady 15th, 12th, 9th, who cares about the number? Simms says Brady can still make all the throws and he reads defenses like a super genius. That’s good enough for Joe.

As for the perspective and upgrade Joe referenced, Simms has Jameis Winston ranked No. 33 overall, a notch behind Case Keenum, one slot ahead of Tyrod Taylor and five behind Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Seriously Chris? First I will pay my respects to you by saying that you were a gutsy player.
I was in the end zone fans when you were upended. Thanks for the cool games that you played for us.
Now for the comments you made.
You said, ‘If Brady was a top 5 or top 10 QB they wouldn’t have let him go.
They had no contract on Brady He didn’t want to stay.
    Here is why.
He does not want his legacy to be tarnished by the cheater tag.
The Buccaneers are the best team to help him succeed.
Since Brady’s arrival, a lot of you folks have forgotten how potent our team really is.
Brady doesn’t see us as weaklings or he wouldn’t have asked the Buccaneers to join the team. He did that not them.
Some of you guys remind me of the three monkeys who see no wins, hear no wins and speak no wins. GO BUCS!!!

  2. Clean House Says:

What a joke, all of these clowns drank the group think koolaid- I’m sick of it!
How the F can a guy lead te NFL in Passing yards, become one of a handful of all time greats Who ever breached the 5,000 yd mark in history and gets ranked 33rd?
Behind Case Keenum and Fitz !!! Total nonsense sorry and any JW haters are totally full of it.

It just doesn’t make any sense- and yes so get the giveaway argument but I call Total BS

He was also a TD leader Top tier in the entire league.
The entire league is delusional- I’ve never seen such nonsense

Colin Kaepernick is not as good as NFL backups too right?

    Ridiculous nonsense- lost all credibility

  3. Clean House Says:

Don’t even respond haters- he is obviously better than 33rd
And you will say can the entire league be wrong- I say yes, it is
Just like it’s wrong about the con artist BS whisperer

  4. adam from ny Says:

basically simms said we’re gonna have a “starry night” in tampa

  5. El Buco Realisto Says:

It is obvious!!!!!!!! When a qb works with ole stale biscuit, that QB will drop 10 positions!!!!!!!!!!!!! The self proclaimed “qb whisperer” has been exposed!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bruce Arrogance is the 33rd best ranked head coach in the league!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And soon he will be unemployed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Rankings are meaningless……..see if you can win money on a bet in Vegas based on rank……
Give me an average QB on the field with exceptional experience, decision making and leadership skills and I’ll show you a winner. That’s Tom Brady.

As far as the Winston ranking……like all other’s…..meaningless……I would say, at $1 Winston has very good value.

  7. Formerly Tampa 2 Says:

@CLEAN HOUSE You are really Winston, aren’t you? Joe has posted 2 threads and you and the nut case realist are on a roll. Can’t you both just go away?

  8. Buczilla Says:

15? That is a little low. Cool thing is, we’ll find out soon enough. 😁

  9. Stanglassman Says:

I’d like to see Simms list of the ten better qbs than Brady. List them! I can think of arguably 4-5 then you just start looking silly. You start adding guys that can’t stay healthy and never done much like Dat Prescott, Matthew Stafford, Kurt Cousins and Wentz.

  10. Kobe Faker Says:

“Soon the Buc Sheep will know what El Buco Realisto is saying

The Bucs were the only fools to give the Old Goat $60 million for 2 years and the playing time to pass Drew Brees in the career passing TDs and yards record before he retires

Soon enough they will see what the El Buco sees”

    Kobe Faker

  11. El Buco Realisto Is a Dicko Says:

Kobe Fart and El Buco Dicko are “buddies”…..isn’t that cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. Bigbucfan90 Says:

Brady doesn’t need to be top five, but let’s not ignore the fact he was number one in the deep ball completions! Now he has possibly two of the best receivers in the league and a safety blanket with gronk cmon now we are going to the super bowl!! I use to love Winston too but he bashed us bad and the fact he waited to get eye surgery after he was off the roster rubs me the wrong way it’s like he never planned to stick it out in Tampa smh

  13. Kalind Says:

Poor Simms. Dude has had to carry that half-witted twit Florio for years. Y’all seen that site lately? Frick….just awful.

  14. Bucsfanman Says:

Some of you really show your lack of football IQ sometimes. When did someone’s rankings win football games? Do you think Brady cares about being ranked? At all? The only people or players that care about rank are losers, losing franchises with players for hire….aka the Bucs.
Brady has been to NINE Super Bowls, won 6 of them. He has 3 MVPs. You really think he cares about 5,000 yards and 7-9 seasons?! Or, for that matter, where Chris Simms has him ranked?!
    Give me a break!

  15. Bucsfanman Says:

#1 passer in the NFL, now a backup for division rival, has how many playoff appearances? And people care that he’s ranked #33?! Hilarious!

  16. David Says:

    Totally disagree.

    1. NE didn’t let him go. They tried to sign him. He wanted to leave
    2. He was reluctant in the pocket? No, New England’s O line was horrible. Believe it or not, the Buccaneers’ O line was much better.
And he had 1 wr to throw to.

  17. ncbucsfan Says:

The problem with Simms, as well as many other media personalities is if they are saying what is commonly being stated, they never get the headlines or stand out enough for their statements to be noticed. So Simms may know and study the game but coupled with random “hot takes” being “perceived” as insight, he loses credibility with me. And they’ll stand behind the BS they say at times. The Brady take isn’t as bad as the Jameis one, though its pretty bad. An “average” QB is somebody like Jacoby Brissett.

  18. BringBucsBack Says:

Simms usually does a good job but, c’mon 15th?! Please, who are the 14 QBs better than Brady & Breeze? It sounds like Simms is auditioning for one of BSPN’s “scream something stupid” shows!

However, “Jameis…five behind Ryan Fitzpatrick” might be a little closer to realism, if not a bit funny.

  19. Allbuccedup Says:

I wonder where Simms would rank himself if he was still playing probably 75th.

  20. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

If Jay Miss were a starter, he would be ranked in the top 32. However, he’s not. He’s relegated to a 3rd stringer, so Clean House you should be happy he’s not below 64.
However, Jay Miss remains #1 in interceptions, stupid on the field decisions and stupid off the field decisions.

  21. Va buc Says:

What gruden said…and he said what he said. Chris simms tho 🤫 a bum. The last thing he should call someone is average when he’s below it

  22. Beej Says:

The Bucs didn’t need Bret Favre to win the Super Bowl, they just needed a slightly above competent QB, which they hadn’t had in a decade. Brady is probably #10 of 32 at this point, and that’s fine

  23. Joseph Mamma Says:

    ———————————————————————-
If New England thought he was the Tom Brady of old, I’m guessing they would have done whatever they had to to sign him. Check out the current NE QB depth chart for crying out loud.

Your analysis suggests that Brady’s skills aren’t declining and his not so great season was all due to offensive line and lack of receivers.

I don’t think your narrative is correct, but I hope I’m wrong.

  24. Youngbucs Says:

Brady’s not so great season last year 😂 he season was better than Winstons.
    Check y’all sheets

  25. Oneilbucs Says:

Clean house the national media has always had a narrative against Jamies since he came in the NFL . That’s why if you bring up Payton Manning stats in his first 5 years against Jamies stats they make excuses for Payton and say Jamies suck . But the crazy thing is and every body knows that Manning teams was waaaaay better than what Jamies had . Jamies have been putting up great numbers without a running game or a defense .

  26. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

^^^ and that one wife received couldn’t carry Godwin’s jock, much less Evans.

  27. DoooshLaRue Says:

2020 has sucked so far, but let
us all give thanks to what we don’t have to deal with as Bucs/JBF fans this season:

    JayMiss
    Softie93
    t. Ma. X
    NOSBOS

And of course, ndog and his delusion band of Nuthuggers!

…… now if we could only get Clean Trailer…. err House to hit the road…,..

  28. Ron Says:

Chris Simms doesn’t know what a average QB is, or longevity, so it is kind of a tainted view as he never reached either. He has been around football forever and makes some valid points but it is usually in positions which he did not play as he was able to see how others who were successful around him performed. It is just another weak ideal that will be batted down. Brady is a great QB and being so he will adjust and also adjust his team to win, cause greatness is a shared responsibility a better QB would have known that.

  29. Sauron's eye Says:

Brady is still a big upgrade over what we had last year. We will win some one score games in the fourth quarter, which always seemed to go down as defeats in previous years.

  30. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

I think 15 is a little low for Brady, but I understand the logic. I also think 33 is a little low for Winston. I put Winston at 25, a notch below Jared Goff (people forget he went to the Super Bowl), and a notch above where Simms has Drew Lock (although there is no way I would put Lock there).

  31. stpetebucsfan Says:

    O’Neill and Clean House

Stats are for losers especially when you single out a meaningless stat that never won a championship or in the case of all time great JW can’t even make the playoffs.

You whine like little sissies about not comparing JW’s first five to Peyton’s first five

JW 28-42 ZERO PLAYOFFS PM 42-38 THREE PLAYOFFS IN FIVE YEARS!!!

There’s your comparison!!! Nobody cares about interceptions…or yardage at the end of the day it’s the W’s and NOTHING ELSE! JW IS A LOSER! PM IS A WINNER!!

  32. stpetebucsfan Says:

“Tom Brady is still good enough to where he can win a Super Bowl. … His arm is still real good.”

That SHOULD be enough. But Chris moans that Brady doesn’t want to hang in there and take the hits. Personally I do not want Brady to hang in there and take the hits. %’s are outstanding that if he lives another play or two he’ll do some damage. If he takes the wrong hit he’s out! Simple as that.

I honestly believe our OL will do a professional…adequate if not stellar job of protecting Brady. Combine that with the right play calling and strategy and a QB that has seen it all and knows how to dump it off…and I think Brady has the same chance of surviving this season as any other QB.

If you take Simms analysis…”his arm is still real good and he’s good enough to win a SB…then that’s all we’re looking for anyway.

  33. Oneilbucs Says:

stpetebucfan the hold point is it’s a team game not a quarterback game . And again no one is crying just because some of us just bring up facts . But not the sats don’t mean nothing because we bring up Payton Manning . The hold thing is that everyone has been blaming one guy for losing . They blame him because we can’t run it ball . They blame him because the defense couldn’t make stops when we needed them to end the game . They blame it when our kicker miss kicks that would have put games out of reach . All of those things is the reason why the Colts was winning doing those times when Payton threw all those picks . But the national media will never show that when they bring up Payton and Jamies . But don’t get mad because some of us bring facts . Again go research who had the better team around them and you will understand if you are not blinding with hate for Jamies .

  34. Payton Vs JW Says:

Payton made the playoffs 3 out of 5 times in his first 5 yrs.
    Stop comparing JW to Payton.

Wins are the only thing that matter. JW has a long way to go before HE can be in the conversation among HOF PLAYERS. Stats look pretty but there is one stat that trumps them all.

    Eating W’s.

BRADY has a lot of W’s in the bank. Hard to doubt him even at his age. He has been eating W’s his entire career. No excuses. Just wins.

  35. Youngbucs Says:

Yea it’s a team gm and the most important player is QB. Get lost loser with the excuses.

  36. Buc believer Says:

Remind us all again how many Super Bowls you won Chris and how many Tom has won?

  37. Knuckle Sandwich Delivery Service Says:

If you don’t want to take the blame for wins and losses then don’t be a QB. That’s the top spot. The only player who gets more touches is the center. All decisions, audibles, line assignments, and motions are called by that top guy. He also ultimately decides where and when to throw the ball.

But yeah, he beats no responsibility for the outcome. Thanks clean house and O’Neill. Take the rest of the day off.

  38. Knuckle Sandwich Delivery Service Says:

Jameis is no longer on this team. I’m not sure if you FSU homers know that. He’s now a backup on a divisional rival roster. So as Buc fans, maybe you’ll get to root against your own team if he’s ever playing against us.

Kind of like the fantasy geeks who cheer for their teams QB throwing a pick six to the opposing defense they started that weekend. Idiocy.

I’M over it -switching to the Saints..
Shall I quote the rest liar. Why are you here Jameis fan???

  40. Mike Johnson Says:

My fellow Bucs fans are gonna finally understand why Bellacheat is one of the greats. He moved on from Brady. And we..got the hoodwink. Let the games began.

  41. Stanglassman Says:

Oneibucs- Be careful if you say anything remotely positive about Jameis they’ll question your Bucs loyalty. This is a love or leave it crowd. There will be no questioning of roster moves, that is now no longer being a fan. If you like John Lynch that’s fine but only if you’re a Broncos fan.

  42. Sport Says:

Clean House – get your mind out of Fantasy Stats, watch the damn games and JW’s play form a ‘situational football’ perspective. He has consistently ranked poorly through this career.

Garbage yards, turnovers, stupid throws into double/triple coverage = 33rd.

    WAKE UP FROM YOUR FANTASY!!!

    In BA I Trust!

  43. Oneilbucs Says:

knuckles the quarterback position is the most dependable position on the field . How come Steve Young didn’t make in Tampa because the team was bad. Again yall can keep blaming 1 guy all you want . But remember this Brady thing will be over soon real soon then what ?? When we draft the next guy at quarterback if he’s not a hall of fame quarterback by year 3 then yall will be blaming him for every lost . You will see if we can’t run the ball or play defense we are going to lose regardless who’s playing quarterback . Football is a team game and this fan base is to stupid to see that .

  44. stpetebucsfan Says:

    “And we..got the hoodwink.”

Mike…just testing your arrogance…do you believe we got hoodwinked because YOU say so? bwaaahaaaaa

I believe I’d like to see the seasons play out before making any of those kind of observations or betting on whether Belachik can reach the playoffs with any QB besides Brady after 25 years. He certainly struggled in Cleveland and was a LOSER his first year in NE BEFORE BRADY!

The onus is on BB not Brady.

  45. TomTerrific Says:

Who is Chris Simms??? Never won anything as a professional QB. But he knows what it takes to win a championship? GTFOH

  46. Mike Says:

Saw some next gen stats on Jay miss, TOWP (turn over worthy play), and Jay miss was tops on that sheet. All those other HOF QBs (Who played with a much more difficult rules set) did not show up on that sheet.

  47. Clean House Says:

What happened to TMax? I saw a post saying he was gone.
Oh and by the way, didnt’ Jameis make a vast improvement on deep ball stats?

I’d be curious to see how he ranked in that stat as well as the recent pressure evasion stat. He seemed pretty good in those areas to me, or does NFL .com omit him now that he’s not a starter?

P.S. If you would have said to me, Tom Brady was coming in to be the Bucs starter and JW was going to sit behind him a few seasons, I would have been on board 100% I bet he would have even happily taken a team-friendly backup salary to work with Tom. My problem is not with TB it’s with BS and Licht.

  48. Bucsfanman Says:

On Belichek vs. Brady, Belichek had ONE playoff appearance as a HC before Tom Brady. ONE!
    Chicken or the egg?!

Clean House- I don’t think Jameis was willing to do that. Him signing with NO for a song says so. Shoot, Gabbert was signed for more.
At the end of the day, they just didn’t see a future with JW.

  49. Sailer Jerry Says:

Remember this, Mike Evans made Johnny Manziel look great in college. In fact made him a Heisman winner. ME made JW look good stats wise. Especially when we played most games from behind and had to abandon the run because of early turnovers. How will JW look without ME? We will find out. How will TB look with ME? We will find out. I cant wait to see the last game of the pre-season to see how JW does. I wish him well.

  50. Clean House Says:

So your logic is Tom Brady made Belichick and Mike Evans made Jameis Winston. Ok Hope you’re right.. with them AND the whisperer, Two automatic Super Bowls chmpionships coming right up…I’ll Bri g the 7 layer dip
